PSA: I Don't Think You'll Be Able To Share The Switch 2 Versions of BOTW or TOTK Without The Person Having To Pay To Upgrade It

BOTW and TOTK for Switch 2 contains the Switch 1 cartridge of the game (pics below) and an upgrade pack which you download.

Unless the upgrade pack is able to be infinitely downloaded with that exact cartridge (which seems unrealistic, its Switch 1 cartridge)...if you lend the game to someone they are going to have to pay to upgrade it to the Switch 2 version.

Here are the box arts for BOTW and TOTK.

They also making a point of stating on the box that the upgrade packs are available separately.

They need to start answering some questions regarding this and Game Keys.

I'm still not convinced the game is on a Switch (1) cart when you buy the Switch 2 Editions.

When I pop the Metroid Prime 4 Beyond Switch 2 Edition in my Switch 2 I expect it to launch the game in its 120fps glory from the get-go without any download.

Yeah, this is such a specific thing that will likely happen to <1% of consumers it's really a non-issue for them.
Especially because they state the availability of the upgrade packs clearly.

It's still really lazy development on their end, though. Like, come on, just make a new cartridge.

But as always: Playing on console is expensive af. *insert always has been meme*
It only makes sense they are combating reselling to make even more bank where they can.

yeah it's like the botw dlc iirc.
It's not like that at all.

They're essentially making the "next gen" versions of BOTW and TOTK unable to be shared without charging the recipient.

If you lend them your Switch 2 version of BOTW they will be playing the OG Switch version of the game, unless they pony up.

That's ridiculous.

Metroid 4 Primes box for Switch 2 same the exact same thing.

It's pretty clear...it's says it's contains "The Nintendo Switch game and The Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack. Upgrade pack is also available separately"

Here is the upgrade pack.

Doesn't sound like an elegant solution but the amount of people affected is negligible.
Or they could just put the Switch 2 version in the box....I'm not sure why people would be defending this.

This is essentially them having their next gen versions of their physical games unable to be shared without charging the recipient.

That's literally some Xbox One type shit.

So I imagine the code is a redeemable code that essentially purchases an upgrade and ties it to your account. This is like how disc versions of FF7R worked. You can upgrade your PS4 disc to a PS5 digital copy, but you still had to have the disc in for it to work. If you ever gave that disc away, sold it, whatever, its still just a PS4 game. The upgrade itself exists on your account.

TLDR: The "switch 2 edition" factor is a consumable 1 time code that is permanently associated with your account, it would seem.

Yeah I know.

But it doesn't say there's a internet requirement or a requirement for a separate download.

I'd expect to walk out of the store, pop the game in to my offline Switch 2, and play the Switch 2 Edition.

I don't think it'll require a constant internet connection after the download.

I don't think this is gonna happen and I think if you give it to someone else, it'll just be the OG Switch version, unless they upgrade.

Yeah, that's what I'd need clarified. Because that's what I'd expect if I buy the Switch 2 Edition of a game.

Definitely won't be able to share the physical version since the upgrade is a one use code. You could still share the digital version of the game I imagine though using that weird virtual card shit they announced.

Yes they could have done that but it sounds like they didn't. Like I said, not an elegant solution. That sucks but oh well.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong.

But I don't think so....
Yeah, we'll see. I just don't get why you wouldn't be able to share the game with, say, a Switch(1) if this is the case.

They've already confirmed that Switch 2 Editions of games will only be playable on the Switch 2.

You will be able to with these games... games like CB2077, etc won't be able to be played on Switch 1.

The Switch 2 Editions of these games are digital upgrades that only work on Switch 2. For example you can upgrade the Switch 1 version you have right now (with the Upgrade Pack) to work on the Switch 2.

All this messing around is so they can charge people an extra £$€10-20.

Microsoft choosing to just sell you a title and giving you the PC/Series/Xbox One version depending on where you are playing feels like a nicer policy from a consumer perspective.

I guess that might be the case. From their wording it says Switch 2 Edition Games though, not upgrade packs which is specified here.

I interpret that as if I specifically buy the Switch 2 Edition, I won't be able to put that game in my Switch 1 and play it. It won't be compatible.

But we'll know soon enough I guess.
