Question for those of you that undervolt GPUs - specifically 4090s

The mania surrounding melting cables has convinced me to start undervolting my 4090 so it can run cooler and draw less power.

So far I can run at 0.950V with the same clocks, but I was wondering if these undervolts are only working when MSI afterburner is active? Or will the undervolts remain even when it's not running?

Any advice on how I can get the most. I followed this video and found it quite helpful.

Any additional suggestions? Games to test stability, etc?

Have fun.

The Undervolt profile will remain even when Afterburner is closed.

I usually have a few profiles set up and saved :

- A stock profile
- U/V one on a curve running 2715Mhz on the Core with a +1200Mhz O/C on the memory which usually draws between 300-360w @ 0.95v.
- O/C profile running 3000Mhz on the Core and +1200Mhz OC on the Memory. Draws anywhere between 430-480w @ 1.10v.

It will load your profile automatically if you enable "start with windows"

Anyway, instead of messing with the curve I just set the Power limit to 70%, Mem MHz +1500 and Core MHz +150, an easy ~100W save.

I dont recommend power limit. In most games I saw just slight performance difference (2-3fps), but there were also games like metro exodus at 4K where I had 85fps at stock settings and 63fps with 70% power limit. It's much better to undervolt GPU.

MSI AB will apply the UV curve when it starts and keeps it even if closed.
Values will only be lost if another similar app changes them or if the driver crashes.

I set the curve to 0.95 for my max boost, but it goes to like 0.970. Did I do something wrong?

Also, what are some good game benchmarks to test stability?

I know people use Furmark but I’ve never really felt that was necessary.

I just went the simple way, downloaded Afterburner and used it to limit the card to 400W max draw, and 81°C max temp. I've lost a negligible amount of performance for a cooler running card, it still gets quite loud under heavy load, but nowhere near stock sounds.

Any game that uses 99% of the GPU will be decent for testing. Better if it has RT or PT.
And use native res, no upscaling. No give it the most usage.

CP2077 might be a good way. Or any UE5 game with RT.
Or even 3Dmarks SpeedWay.

That sounds like a recipe for a barbecued connector.
