Someone once said to me they couldn't go in with their dog when they were being put down because it hurt too much. So the dog had to go in alone with the vet.

Agreed. I've been there for every single one of my pets' passings.

In this case, our neighbors moved out hastily this last week and they left their dog and cat behind. I waited three days to see if their owners were coming back and gave them both food and shelter in the interim, but the people never returned. Spoke to the homeowner's son this morning who came back to check the place and he said they were evicted for drug use and wouldn't be back. Thankfully, I know the people who run a local trap, neuter, release group and got in touch. They reached out to another rescue agency who came and got the animals.

The poor dog looked so confused and scared and didn't want to leave their driveway.

I saw on my local news a couple years ago reports of people abandoning their cats because their color didn't match the walls in their new house/apartment.

There should be a place for the people that force others to give up their pets and those that go along with it without a fight.

That's how I got my two boys. Guys new wife hated his cats and pulled the ultimatum card after they were married. They had been locked in a basement for 6 months or longer before I got them.
