"I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now.

“I think the level of scrutiny that’s going to be there, and people will be filming it, and it will go online."

Probably for the best, it was one of the more distracting parts of that Olympics.

Short rant here. I’m 44. Back in the early to late 90s I used to break. It used to mean a lot to me. I quit sports right as I became a teenager and started drinking and smoking and being a general delinquent. My only outlet at that time was the music (80s electro) and BBoy shit. Probably what kept me out of more trouble. Obviously I’m old as shit now and don’t breakdance anymore. I was pretty fucking excited this time for the Olympics, just for old time sake. I’ve seen countless BBoys and gals doing some incredible shit I couldn’t have even dreamed of 30 years ago. The fact that this chick got a spot and basically took a fucking shit on the whole thing is pretty remarkable, actually. Anyways what a fucking farce.

From her disaster performance, she never got famous with endorsements or being paid for appearances or anything did she?

I hope not.

She was so bad, my first thought is she trolled everyone looking for a way to get famous and make some quick money even though she had no chance at a medal.

I only remember what I read and supposedly her performance was good enough to qualify from her region. Who knows. Maybe it's true. But I would had thought there's got to be some people better than her from Aussie. Maybe not.

i watched some videos of other competitors who had real skills and despite not knowing anything about the sport I was impressed and engaged. I'm just fucking sad for them for the reason you are: they finally get a chance to showcase their art to the world and this australian takes a huge dump all over it and i don't know the word in english, in spanish it's "hazmereir" means it became a thing to make people laugh at but in a bad way.

Genuinely feel sad for the other competitors...

Who was really asking for breakdancing to become an Olympic sport? Maybe Raygun was just making a statement on our societies endless desire to rank and rate and not accept art for what it is.

It's a truly athletic activity... Neither of us could do what the actual competitors (not Raygun) did.

And it was an exhibition... Not a permanent part of the Olympics.

"Laughing stock", someone or something that attempts to be taken seriously but is instead mocked for it's incompetence, would be a good translation.

I mean, she took a spot for someone with actual talent that could've won a medal for his/her country, so I have no sympathy for her.

"The World DanceSport Federation said the ranking methodology is based on each athlete’s top four performances within the past 12 months – but excludes Olympic events including the Paris Games and Olympic qualifier series events in Shanghai and Budapest.

Additionally, no ranking events were held between December 2023 and the Olympics – to allow athletes to focus on qualification."

And? Was she not rated at number one?

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I'm still not sure that she isn't doing an Andy Kaufmann-esque bit and now she's just saying she's done with it.
You're giving her too much credit that would require self awareness and she obviously has zilch. I think a clam on the seafloor is more self aware than her.
What I don't understand is why a middle aged Australian academic would even attempt to seek street cred by being a "breaker".

Cultural appropriation at its worst.

This is what happens when people are too polite to be honest. If it was me I would rather someone was "cruel to be kind" before I ever entered a national let alone world stage.

You see similar with awful singers on talent shows etc... Friends and family did her no favours.

When you get someone taking part in the Olympics that looks like me trying to get out of bed in the morning and have everyone fawn over them like they're the second coming

There's hope for us all :messenger_sunglasses:
