Retro console market EXPOSES Backwards Compatibility. It's not a Privilege, it's a Luxury

I think we feel because we invested in last gen software that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are obligated to provide emulation to their next consoles.

(It would be naïve to think these companies have a department dedicated to preserving their own IPs and source codes.)

However, these company's only purpose to the industry is to prolonge, expand gaming, and.....protect their IPs, not preserving. I know this might seem counter productive or "a n t i c o n s u m e r (and lead some taking matter into their own hands) but backwards compatibility is not a right. It's not a privilege. It a Luxury.

Here comes Retro console and handhelds.

The retro gaming market does serve a purpose. However, it being a luxury come at a cost. they are oversaturated in the middle price range and are getting expensive at the high end.

This is to say we should allow the big three to phase out BC in their next console (if you think emulation is easy, look at all the processes needed for PC emulation, arcade emulation and retro console as mentioned).

Keeping your original hardware will be more cost effective than the many retro handheld and console variations out today.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I don't follow.

Are you saying that because emulation is difficult to implement, that companies shouldn't bother, and you'd rather they fuck over their paying customers in favor of those same customers just buying emulation machines in the future? Cause if so, I don't agree.

BC doesn’t work the way it did on the consoles prior to the ps4. It’s all on abstraction layers now so BC should be an issue going forward. PS3 was still APIs built to directly interact with the hardware and before the ps1 all consoles where written in machine code that obviously directly fed the hardware.

So BC shouldn’t event be a thing now last hen Gabe’s should just work as intended with very minimal effort.

You could say that about gaming itself, so what?

Terrible take. We should be asking more for our money, not less.

Emulation for all these old devices is hard because of custom hardware that usually had very little use outside of the console they were designed for. The next console would then have radically different hardware making compatibility a issue. Unless something radically changes this is no longer the case. Consoles will likely continue to use x86 and AMD for the foreseeable future and even if they were to switch to ARM, Nvidia, or Intel emulation for something as well known as x86 will not be overly difficult.

Neither Microsoft nor Sony will give up BC for another simple reason, and that is digital libraries. These companies know they have now locked in customers at a far higher rate then previous generations and a major drawing factor when a next-gen console launches is the fact that your entire content library would just work. Someone who has hundreds of games and multiple digital purchases will be far less inclined to switch ecosystems.

Unless it's a case where they can't emulate a previous console decently due to hardware limitations, as the case of PS3 emulation in PS5 or console not being able to read originl physical games due to using a different format (certain incompatible cartridge or disk type), or because of controllers can't be adapted, consoles should offer BC.

It's better for them in cse of digital games, because makes their digital catalog of the store -and depending on the case, the gme sub too- bigger and more appealing and add uniqueness. Something they'll need when in the future all the digital stores or their cloud gaming services will start being present in all kind of platforms.

Switch 2, PS6 and (if it ever exists) the next Xbox they must offer BC, because their hardware will be pretty likely the same but more powerful, pretty likely the gamepads and physical methods will be almost the same and they already will have the digital store ready.

Quite possibly the shittiest thread on GAF in a good while 🤣🤣🤣 WTF are you smoking? Big corp love schmucks like you.

Are we supposed to feel sorry for these big multi billion dollar corps who don't give a flying fuck about us because they would have to put a small amount of thought/research and a small cost into each console going forward to preserve history and a back catalogue of games that will no longer be playable if they don't keep BC a thing?

Sorry but game preservation on console is absolutely fucking disgraceful and needs to improve drastically, Sony and Nintendo specifically are shit when it comes to BC, If anyone thinks that it would cost either of them a fortune in R and D and implementation in a new console then you're lying to yourself, It would be very little work for a huge software/hardware business like Sony and Nintendo to get their history online for their next consoles and for discs to work.

It's really sad that Playstation and Nintendo gamers have to rely on emulator developers doing such a great job that we can still play our old games as old hardware doesn't last forever!!!

It's time that old library's were more accessible especially on PSN and Nintendo's online service.
