[Tom Warren] The next Xbox is going to be very different

I'd rather a PC hybrid more than a handheld, personally.
You'll get a regular console

If there was anyone with imagination at Microsoft this might mean some real innovation, but they're probably going to take a horsepower angle again then hobble themselves with an inferior Series S equivalent.

The most consequential element of their rumored plan is forward compatibility, and the full emulation layer that's rumored because after that is part of Windows or Windows Lite, hardware is mostly a distant second as a concern. You'd just pick whichever box or handheld is the price and specs you want and it loads up the same system UI and stores and works with whatever controller you want. All that really even matters is their Windows / Xbox / BC software project. Any comparatively small company can sell hardware without subsidy like you see with handhelds and PC, so that is a much more trivial part of this for MS.

They're not going to do a PC hybrid.

Why, because you look at the people who want a PC hybrid, it's to play and buy games on Steam lol. In other words, they want to buy a "console" that Microsoft will make no money from, and not benefit from selling at all. While I understand why that is good for people, nobody has ever explained to me why it is good for Microsoft, or how it would drive Xbox as a platform.

The only reason I can think of to go that way is to keep legacy customers from revolting. Even ween them off to general pc gaming. They've been good about keeping up infrastructure for older stuff so killing all xbox overnite would be pretty rough.

Microsoft has killed off tons of shit overnight. The idea that they would invest hundreds of millions of dollars to make a console with the idea of trying to get people to not play games on it but instead transition to another, different, but sort of related platform is bananas.

if they can actually make the streaming stick work, i think they have a real possibility of a killer product. Just my opinion. But they should release a beefy console running windows, and an xbox branded handheld pc, along with the streaming stick, they could potentially have a killer set up going.

That's why I'm leary of their claim
I believe they will do something dramatic.

They moved most of their software to other devices which means they don't have much of a user-base to lose so they kinda have free range on what this device can be spec wise.

Definitely time to offer something different. PS and Xbox has the same architecture in both previous gen and this gen. Nextbox definitely needs a gimmick. It'll probably be a powerful AI upscaler.

When has that stopped them? The idea of training that same base to rent games after all the concern over "digital libraries" was bananas, too.

edit: oh and i dont think this would have the kind of investment as a typical console.

Shhhh let the people delude themselves some more, can't end the party here and now.

Royalty split discussions between Microsoft and the other storefronts will either kill this entire idea or render it completely irrelevant when the only storefronts that come in are either irrelevant or have wonky integrations.

They need to provide an off-ramp to existing customers who will not be buying their next uber expensive Surface Xbox devices and give them a pathway towards maintaining their GP subs.

They want to ensure that most of the ex-Xbox audience that gets spilled over by their moves doesn't go to Playstation or Nintendo, if they're on PC then at least they can sell a PC Gamepass sub to them. I personally think the idea is stupid, and they're far better off just taking the gloves off and actually taking the fight to Valve.

They want to make the next hardware innovation but they are trying to do it with the surface team.

Best they can do is fill it with epoxy so it is unrepairable.

Sony and Nintendo have been trying this since they came out, with some great success and some failure.

Surely I don't know how the surface team will pull it off.

If they could create an Xbox with Steam and charge a low amount for it, that might not be bad. However, I got a feeling we will get a Win 12S ARM PC that only runs Microsoft Store, EGS, and itch.io. At first people will brag but EGS is a no go for me and not nearly the same a console that can run steam. If it could run steam I'm interested, if it is a way to spread EGS then yuck. Get Steam on board or cancel it.

It does seem a bold claim, but their hardware has been consistently excellent since the release of the One S in 2016.

They missed BG3 release date because of the Series S and then BMW. That's two GOTY contenders\winners back to back. I don't consider that excellent IMO but to each his own. I would be pissed if I had a Series X and missed both of those games because of the S.

the only way forward for Xbox at this point is to make a perfect Console and PC hybrid ecosystem.

and that's gonna be hard to pull off.

1: they need full compatibility for all digital purchases both on the next Xbox consoles and on PC

2: they need a fully featured controller that isn't missing anything like a gyroscope etc.

3: Windows needs a gaming mode ala Steam OS, which seamlessly supports third party launchers and has intuitive solutions for moments where you need mouse or keyboard inputs.

4: at least the home console needs to support disc based games. best case would be full disc support on Windows and the possible handheld, as well as long as you have a compatible disc drive connected. (USB disc drives aren't that expensive)

5: Xbox Live online play needs to finally be free and not tied to any subscription.
it's already fucking retarded that you still have the subscription fee now, when Xbox games are all on PC, are all cross buy and cross progression, and are all using the same online service... but it's free on PC and costs money on console.
doesn't make sense now, would make even less sense once the hybrid thing happens.

the thing is that I kinda doubt most of these things will actually happen, simply because I just always expect the worst possible thing out of any large scale gaming company these days

They really need to wow folks. That much is certain

Nah Xbox can go pretty much anyway they want with their next console. As long as they release a console with game pass access they're going to sell about the same no matter what.

It's going to be really shiny, really tiny, more power efficient than anything you've ever seen. Really affordable too.

Also, if you're unable to see it, H. C. Andersen wrote a story about it.

How? Xbox console sales continue to decline. If the next Xbox is just more of the same then I don't see how they will turn that around.

If it can't run steam then i don't give a single fuck about a MS handheld.
What if Microsoft store goes all Epic and has exclusives that are not available on Steam? What if Microsoft convinces developers that they do not need to sign up for a Steam Price Parity agreement?
What if PC games are actually cheaper on the Xbox store?

I have super bad news for those hoping Xbox is pulling out of the console making business

Sorry

Season 2 Shrug GIF by The Office
I don't think anyone is hoping xbox pulls out some of us just see the numbers and see the XBS is gonna be lucky to sell 40M units.
Plus then you have Microsoft putting all there games on PS and Switch.
Which then makes you think if I can play games like Forza and Halo on my PS and Nintendo then why would I buy a Xbox then?

Yeah but this one will have an Xbox sticker on it.

All I will say is 4-5 years after this thing launches will tell us everything.

4-5 years into last gen told us what to expect for XBO. 4-5 years into this gen, same thing.

If you have 600+ games that means you ALREADY have a machine to play those games, you don't need a new machine to play old games.
A new Machine is a new start with a new library of new games.
well, maybe Microsoft can spin this to work.

People need to get off the PC hybrid crap and expecting microsoft to allow steam to run on their systems. It'd be suicide to allow crap like that because you'd make 0 profit and lose billions of dollars, and no one is going to buy expensive hardware to make up for it when they can't even sell the series s at 250 or below right now.
That and the fact Steam now has PlayStation games. There is 0% chance Sony is allowing that to happen.

Nahh there are several here that include Xbox pulling out of the console business in their nightly prayers

For whatever reason some are all about console wars on both sides of the green and blue fence

Granted I feel Xbox themselves fostered the PS fanboys hate towards them by having Xbox brass act buddy buddy with the worst of the worst Xbox zealots

That and the fact Steam now has PlayStation games. There is 0% chance Sony is allowing that to happen.
You think Sony is going to dictate to Steam what they can do?

Best Sony can do is pull their games from Steam

Ya sony would ban any playstation game from being played on an xbox device. I also fail to see what microsoft would even gain from allowing steam and epic to put their storefronts on their next console. Like there's just 0 logic in doing so unless you wanna completely bankrupt your business.

Is this including One S and series S?..
Yes, the One S was an excellent revision of the original Xbox One and could even operate as a 4K Blu-ray player, which surprisingly the PS4 Pro couldn't.

The hardware itself is well made.

Yes I do! Sony would not allow ANY PlayStation games on Xbox branded hardware. So even if they had Steam on their next hardware, there would be caveats to that with not having PlayStation games playable on there.

I mean if they can make a deal with AMD for a decent APU, it might work?

Question is pricing and how open would PC side be.

Edit: If they don’t have Steam on there, no point.
