Why are people surprised by these numbers? Titanic cost $200 million to make in the mid-1990s. It is not at all surprising that an action movie 30 years later would cost 50% more in unadjusted dollars.

A big difference is that, according to the info posted in this thread, it took 49 days to shoot Gladiator 2 while Titanic took 160 days.

This list is wildly inaccurate because it doesn't:

• Factor in marketing budgets.
• Factor in the cut for theaters.

Avatar 2's listing should have been the first red flag in that article.

Studios are preflopping their films. This first Gladiators made like 450 million WW.

Gladiator 2 would have been a successful movie if it's anywhere near the first's quality, I'd guess 700 million ceiling. On a normal 200 million budget this would be a smash hit.

Box office revenue is split between the studio and the theaters. The exact percentage fluctuates from week to week, theater to theater, and from country to country. Marketing costs are not included in the movie's budget.

Since it is so hard to pin down how much the studio makes from each ticket sold, we use a general rule that says that a movie must make 2.5 times its budget to break even.
