Rockstar's Max Payne 3 Could Cost $105 Million to Develop, Requires 4 Million Sold

4M should be doable for 360/PS3/PC MP3.

MP2's problem was that its console versions lagged PC release by a couple of months. So once it hit the consoles all the marketing was already dead and noone bought it.

It also didn't help that the console ports were preeeeeeeeetty terrible, especially the PS2 version.

I can see how GTA 4 and RDR could cost so much. Those games are highly detailed sandbox games. But how in the hell has Max Payne ended up costing this much?
Maybe it took six years and was completely restarted twice. It could be anything really, if the guy is even correct.

Er, this sounds like Rockstar all over. This year was LA Noire, last year was Red Dead, next year will be Max Payne. It'll continue R*'s trend of releasing a single game a year, and sweeping both critically and commercially.
Or is sounds like the analysts all over again. They constantly manufacture their own guesses as to how much development cost and how many must be sold to be profitable. It is all guesswork. How do they know when a project started, how many people were on the project, how many assets (sounds, textures, engines, etc.) are being re-used, etc.?

So to fix the subject line " Rockstar's Max Payne 3 Could Cost $105 Million to Develop, might Require 4 Million Sold to be profitable in the opinion of this one analyst"

I don't even understand how a game like this could cost that much if it's not 60-70% due to Rockstar's awful management.

Also I'm wondering how many souls they had to trample over to get this made.

Yeah . . . apparently you can ship PC versions later . . . that is just extra money (and more piracy risk). But you screw yourself badly if you ship the console version later.

(And as pointed out above, it really hurts if the console versions suck.)

If Max Payne has done 3.5 mil on average, then mp3 will easily make 4mil, due to rockstar and the expanded console audience. There are just a lot more people that play these games now.

Also, even if it only sold 4 mil, they would be able to continue the franchise as they have invested in the ip.

LA Noire did so well the studio no longer exists and it was far more like GTA than Max Payne 3 is. If:

GTA 4: 18m
RDR: 10m
LA Noire: 6m

Happened, I don't see why Max Payne 3 can't sell 3m or fewer. The more the games get away from GTA, the less they sell and Max Payne 3 has little to do with GTA.
GTA IV has passed 20 mill,RDR more than 11 mil.

OT.Once 10's and 9's start rolling out,and R* PR machine starts doing its biz,it will sell more than 5 mil.EASILY.

Holy hell. With that kind of hypothesized money, this should set the standard for premier games. And I hope this means that Max Payne 3 will be a long, meaty game. I can beat the first two combined under 15 hours easy.

I've heard, however, that this game has gone through the famed R* development hell, and that seems to be the norm nowadays. How they can do this and get sleep at night astounds me. Hopefully this was all for the best, though.

Of course it will sell more than 4 million.

Even largely unknown Euro-yank RPG Two Worlds II has sold more than 2 million.

This is what Im afraid of. I can finish MP2 in about 3.5 hours and I have no problem with that because its plays like a movie. The series has established itself as an interactive action cinematic experience. I dont want a 40 hour Max Payne game. It doesnt seem right, and yet R* doesnt make games that last 10-12 hours.

Im thinking a 10-12 hour game shouldnt cost 100+ million either so Im sure there will be sidequests and all that crap thats completely unnecessary for this series. I mean they already added fucking multiplayer so whats stopping them?

That seems completely reasonable for Rockstar. They sold 6 million copies of LA Noire, a game of arguable quality(I hated it) with very limited mainstream appeal. Marketing, people, marketing.

Maybe it's already posted but I'm on my phone, I guess this means they get about $26 per copy sold? 104mil/4mil, seems pretty in line with the $25-30 per copy usually agreed upon.

Outside of Mass Effect 3, what else is out in March that could feasibly compete with Max Payne 3?

God Eater 2 for Vita, 3DS, and PSP. Once it's announced, Rockstar will definitely delay Max Payne 3 because they'll be too scared to go against it.

$105 million for a Max Payne game that looks nothing like Max Payne.

Will easily make the 4 Mill.

Not only is the series well known and loved among gamers but after the movie also known by a larger audience. This game is destined to sell well. Just hope Rockstar doesn't fuck up the game.

Is Take-Two trying to kill X-Com with MP3 in March? I think everyone interested in X-Com will either pick up ME3 or MP3 if they're releasing in the same month...

4 million will be easy for Max, it has shit loads of fans. Release it on PC and you have my money. If not, go fuck yourself.

It's a R* game with gunz and fancy ass real time animation tech(the as with red dead redemption) should fall really well with the press.

And the Rage engine is just gorgeous.

The movie only did harm to the IP and the game doesn't look anything like the others developed by Remedy.

Is this a confirmation that you will be a viral marketer for MP3 as well? :P

I agree, across all platforms it is easy cake for a Rockstar game to do 4 million. Hopefully it does even more and we get that stupid RDR Pc port already

I think it's doable. Take Two advertise the hell out of their game. When Liberty City DLC pack came was on disc release, I saw it on every bus and subway to work for a good month or two.

It will sell enough to make a profit. R* name is associated with quality, enough to secure the acceptance of many gaming enthusiasts, and the advertising machine surrounding their high-profile games helps lure Joe Sixpacks in droves.

They will do it but it's a shame and a bad example for other developers and publishers. Not everyone has the marketing that rocktar has nor can put a sticker "from the makers of gta" in the box.

100 million for a game is an illegal amount of money. Hope it bombs so the message hits hard. Stop trying to make everything an AAA 100+ million game.
