RTTP: Fallout New Vegas

I played through this several times back in 2010 and loved it. Last week or so I fired it up on Steam Deck just to remind myself how good Obsidian used to be. No mods, nothing. Just vanilla NV.

Man this game is really a masterpiece. It starts with a brilliant setup and just fuckin goes. Relatively small map but an extremely dense game. There’s so much going on. All the factions with their individual reputation scores. All the hidden stuff. The random encounters. The assasins. Great voice acting for the most part. Great writing and a truly open ended experience. If you know what to do you can literally march across the desert and beat the game instantly.

Chris Avellone’s handprints are all over this one. And he wrote some pretty interesting stuff about it on his blog. Worth reading if you like Fallout and sheds some light on the current state of Obsidian and his thoughts on the Bethesda Fallout games.

Playing it now I’m seeing a ton of shit that I missed or skipped back in the day and it’s all so good. Just did a side quest where some ghouls wanted to launch themselves into space in rockets and it actually worked? What the fuck? Just an absolutely brilliant game that goes above and beyond what makes a well written RPG.

The perks are so fun to screw around with too.

And just the way the game unfolds and lets you do your own thing absolutely shits on most RPGs.

I honestly can’t decide if I like this or Morrowind more for best game made in this engine but both might be in my top 5 of all time. Absolutely timeless classic. I wish Phil would hire Avellone back and let Obsidian make a new Fallout under his direction now that all the IP’s are under one roof but Phil has seemingly lost the plot.

I kinda hope that rumor about a remake is true because I would love another excuse to go back to the Mojave.

I would say I like Morrowind a bit more just for the quite unusual environment for a fantasy game. Which of course Bethesda promptly followed up by Oblivion, lol.

But New Vegas is a sheer masterpiece of dialogue and quest design. And even still with proper mods it’s an amazing game and permanently has a place on my gaming PC.

I definitely still need to play this some day.

I don't really support any Obsidian doomposting though. Pentiment was phenomenal.

But they're still good? Pentiment was amazing and Avowed previews are really positive?

Maybe I didn’t give Pentiment enough of a fair shake but the Outer Worlds was very disappointing to me and I’m getting Veilguard vibes from Avowed with the stuff their staff is saying. I pray that I’m wrong. Obsidian used to be one of the best in the industry.

The games not even out yet so I guess I just prefer to give Obsidian the benefit of the doubt - especially with how positive the previews have been from basically everyone.

That being said - I'm currently going through New Vegas at the moment so the timing of this thread is kinda funny to me but I'm having a great time with it. Obsidians writing has always been top tier and even Outer Worlds had really solid writing despite some people finding it disappointing but I get it.

I love immersive sims, I love hardcore survival FPS, I love complex and deep RPGs, and it's been this way since the 90s. Deus Ex, Bloodlines, Baldurs Gate, STALKER, etc.. are some of my favorite games of all time.

Yet I hated New Vegas and never succeeded playing it more than 10 hours before dropping it, despite trying many times (and spending hours installing mods in the process). I never really could explain myself why. I guess it must be the tone, I don't gel at all with the faux-sarcastic tone of Bethesda era Fallouts, maybe.

I only ever gave it the one play through, but I always intended to go back. I didn't even do the DLC. All I need is some basic QOL mods and I should be good to go.

This is in contrast to 3 which I 100%ed twice, so I don't know what happened. Maybe it's the word building, which Beth are excellent at. NV seems to be more about the RP, which I wasn't so much doing at the time.

my 13 y.o. has gotten obsessed with Fallout after playing 4 on his PS5, downloaded 1 & 2 onto his surface pro, completed those (twice), played 3 & NV (twice) on some Playstation+ tier, and is now balls deep into 76, he won't shut up about how good NV is, it's his favourite by far, so for xmas i've got him a ton of Fallout Merch and built him a RTX3060 Gaming PC so he can play Fallout London lol, me i only ever got halfway through the next gen version of 4 before giving up lol

While its a better RPG, Fallout 3 and 4 remain superior to me in terms of everything else, especially the atmosphere which is pretty much the most important aspect for me in the modern fallouts. I really hated the locations in FNV, absolute dog shit tier. Even the factions are rofl, Hail Caesar? Lmao. Fuck NV.

r.e. the OG Fallouts 3, NV & 4, is it worthwhile modding them?, i know he wants to play London which is a Fallout 4 mod, but i heard don't buy the steam version of Fallout4 as it'll download the latest version which isnt compatible with London and instead buy from COG, is this correct? was there any DLC's for 3 & NV? i want to get all of them installed and ready including any DLCs/worthwhile mods so he can get stuck in after Xmas

There’s a bunch of dlcs for all of them and it’s ALWAYS worth it to mod them even if they’re already good. Mods fits really well into their worlds and turns all of them into beyond 10/10 masterpieces.

I tried to play this and installing all the improvements mod .. I gave up, I couldnt get it to run I wish there would be an automated way of adding all those dozens of Quality Of Life improvements

F3 and NV dont have that many mods but F4 is a mod haven and can turn the game into a massive improvement over the first.

I never got round to the DLC either but I always meant to. Such a great game.

Look at link above. Wabbajack automates it for you, but you need to sub to a month of Nexus premium so mods get auto downloaded. It’s absolutely worth it.

Great game, one of my favourite games ever, i've mostly played it modded since 2010 and cannot go back to vanilla now, i never had many bugs that couldn't be resolved on PC either with mods or the console commands, console gamers may have a different story understandably.

Can't go wrong with Elder Scrolls from Morrowind to Skyrim or Fallout 3, NV, and Fallout 4 all modded. Even Fallout 4 whose lore isn't as interesting as the others but is still a absolute beast when modded.
I couldn't get into Fallout 4 (another settlement needs your help...), but that was a couple years ago. Ever since Fallout London mod came out I've been dying to try it but my Fallout 4 is on Ps4. As soon as that sucker is 5 bucks on PC I'll be visiting London myself! Mods for the games in this engine are indeed amazing.

This is a real RPG.

I'd dome Josh Sawyer like crazy to get this shit on modern consoles, I don't even need a remaster. Just a straight port, I don't wanna touch Bethesda's slop.

I'm with you on this (but I do still love NV overall). It's an ugly game. The Nevada Skies mod helps significantly, but the world-building in it is incredibly weak. The map feels disjointed and haphazardly thrown together. And Vegas is a joke when you finally arrive. There are like 6 interiors and 10 NPCs walking around. Bethesda kicks the shit out of Obsidian in terms of actually building a believable world.

However, the role-playing aspect of NV is incredible. What the game lacks in atmosphere it more than makes up for in allowing you to actually play the way you want--and the game world then reacting to your choices and actions.

Wish Bethesda would focus exclusively on building environments and let another team handle the story and RPG elements of the next Fallout.

There is a mod that fuses Fallout 3 with Fallout New Vegas so you can play them like if it was one single experience where you can go back and forth in both maps. I believe it's Tales of Two Wastelands.

Imho is the best experience possible in both games. Give it a try.

Im waiting t see if itll be on the new steam sale now in an hour. I have it free on Epic but I hate launching it on my steam deck as it first logs me into epic and then over there I have to click again to start the game. Id rather just have it straight from steam.
