"They didn't know what they were building. They didn't have any real direction. It couldn't last"

"They were so expensive for what they were," Karch said. "They didn't know what they were building. They didn't have any real direction. It couldn't last. And so, who's going to fund them for the next game after that disaster?"

"It would be nice in an ideal world for everyone to have a job," Karch added. "But games with nine-figure budgets are making eight figures in revenue and that's dooming a lot of developers."

This business needs to mature. If it doesn't, the whole business is in trouble. Unfortunately, that means layoffs."

We told them beforehand it looked like shit, this wasnt what we (fans of Saints Row) wanted, and they told us to fuck off and laughed at us

I really don't understand how a video game costs a nine figure sum to make. That's an insane cost.

Product of its time. Never played SR2 which was meant to be great. I enjoyed SR3 and that’s the only one I played, when I saw the next game shared the same map there just wasn’t enough to pull me back in.

It reminds me of Austin Powers, fantastic parody but you can’t keep stretching that formula.

Their own customer base, you know the fans which are exactly the target of this game, refused and disliked what they were making.

Put this in conjuction with leaks from people working inside that stated they weren't making the game for the gamers (they even said they were willing to let the company bankrupt then actually please their fans, incredibly ironic). How this game ever had any chance of being sucessfull?

As CEO that's on you, Karch lol. Why would you greenlight a 9 figure project before you know what you're building? Hire the right leaders and half of these problems disappear.

Can't say I understand the devs thought process. Its sad when fans tell you what is wrong with the game world you are trying to create, and you think you know better than them. They are the ones buying your game. I got it for free and can't be bothered. It is not a good Saint's Row game.

I always hoped for a proper sequel to SR2.

Yeah no shit. To me I was willing to give it a chance till the gameplay showed less interactivity with Ragdolls and the environment than even the 360 original. I truly ask the question "who" was this game made for? The characters look like a gang you'd murder in 3 or just bully in 2.

Let's be honest here. The only one that was too expensive was the woke one that was made for a modern audiences that does not exist. It was the Veilguard of its day. The new installment in a beloved franchise. When concerns were expressed, the devs told the fans to pound sand, they knew what was best. It comes out and flops. Apparently, some devs/pubs refuse to learn the lesson.

Well, it's true. Anything is too expensive if it sells bad enough that it doesn't make the money back.

The important question is why was it unable to make the budget back

As CEO of Saber and not Volition or Embracer he didn't greenlight it. He bought his own studio back from Embracer and greenlit Space Marine 2.
As for the most recent Saints Row, I enjoyed the opening and thought it might actually be a hidden gem until I met my hipster 'gang'.

Right that was published by Deep Silver/Embracer.

A small to mid sized studio known for cart racers made this in less than 2 years.
Bad example, that became beloved AFTER it was already considered a sales failure and the studio was time on a mmorpg version before being shut down.

Though Square Enix is largely to blame a lot of "gamers" at the time wrote the game off for being a "GTA Clone" and saying it looked cheap, etc.

It's just a shame. As others have said, there was a huge wave of feedback that this direction is not the direction fans wanted the series to go, but they kept trucking along thinking that they would shame the audience into buying or enjoying the game, I guess?

I actually have a dilemma when thinking about it though.

On one hand, I want devs to do what they want to do and create without compromise or trying to appease certain groups. On the other hand, western developers have been shown to make every wrong decision creatively when given freedom for the past 5~ years.

Just sucks that a lot of these series are pretty much dead at this point with the huge budgets and bombs of the past few years.

Maybe *someone* should have told them not to do all the blatantly dumb shit they were doing, Mr. Retarded CEO Man.
Again - he wasn't involved with SR, he is just commenting on it as Saber were also under the Embracer umbrella at the time.

No shits, the characters in the 2022 game surely look like the one that would have been bullied by the OG characters.

Never played Saints Row but have seen cutscenes on some. The right side looks badass and normal but the left side just looks completely abominable, disgusting, and wrong. Burn those creatures! They also look like generic npcs in the game rather than core characters lol.

What???
They did know exactly what they were building.
They did have a very real and solid direction.
The game was built for modern audiences... which don't exist.
