I saw the thumbnail on YT, read the title, and immediately opted for "Don't recommend this channel" but knew I'd see it here before long.

I was willing to listen first time round, but he's turned into your average run of the mill rage bait content except with that extra spoonful of arrogance that really drives home the "I'm an annoying cunt" message. It's that special mix that gets you punched in the face. I bet he's been a member here and been banned for being an angry edgelord starting arguments at every turn because he wasn't on camera with his shirt on trying to earn money from telling devs he's better than all of them with no games of his own to prove it.

Df are warriors. I'm not interested enough on who is right or wrong here but this happens when you get involved in the platform wars. Play in dirt you get dirty

I've seen people claim they're biased for and against any given platform at any given time. According to public opinion the only war they would be in would be a civil war.

Digital Foundry is good and shows differences in visuals for the mainstream users.

Threat Interactive is more aggressive and in depth for autistic reddit users.

Both can coexists but perhaps not peacefully.

Differences:
- DF doesnt attack developers by claiming they are incompetent.
They can't "attack" or criticize developers who they have or hope to have relationships with....
- DF doesnt suggest optimizations that make zero sense in a modern game dev enviroment
DF cannot even make any suggestions at all because they don't even have the required experience to even make recommendations.
- DF doesnt ask their community for 900k$ to fix an engine
They don't need to because that's not something they're looking to do? However, they'll act as a pr arm for certain companies and refuse to call them out. How is it that DF has had Nvidia exclusive content 3 gpu generations in a row when they're the worst of the well known pc reviewers. Since the 2000 series, DF has been inflating Nvidia's tires angling for sponsored content and they finally got it with the 3000, 4000, and 5000 series. If you want to talk about integrity, please don't reference DF.
- DF has a little bit of dev experience themselves, which is more than TI has
No they don't at all.
- DF in general knows the stuff they talk about, which is why devs take them serious - unlike TI
No they don't.

I'm not on either side here as my view is that both entities are questionable at best.

I only dislike Alex but I think he's needed for controversial topics, otherwise, the podcast wouldn't be interesting.

Mark Cerny is apparently regarded as a genius by most here (and rightly so), and he is a fan of Digital Foundry. If he thinks they are alright I’m inclined to think the same. Although I obviously watched them before his views were made public.

Most of the posters here that have a problem with them are basing their opinion on perceived slights against their console of choice anyways.

Are they perfect? No, but they do offer good analysis on a lot of games, and interesting retro and other videos from time to time.

TI is an obvious grifter that is just trying to stir up shit for views and donations to his obvious scam project.

I have my opinions about DF, and can't stand them at times but honestly you make a good point.

Cerny, and the PS engineers poured countless hours of their time, effort and dedication into the Playstation hardware, and then to see it be respectively scrutinised by people like DF would really end up grinding their gears... but I think Mark may see it as fair criticism and an objective (or close to) review.

Whatever you might have produced in life in game development, TI would shit on it. Dude even Remedy was a target. Its never good enough for him.

Propose any temporal AA solution? You're part of the problem and RUINING graphics.

TI's start of this war is just the fucking video of TAA from a year ago! Unhinged!

DF misses some technical aspects, but "constantly make shit up all the time" is complete BS cmon. Truely detailing the workings of a complex graphic feature would lose 95% of listeners. They simplify, and often helped by devs for the game they talk about because they do not claim to be know it all about game engine development, they never have. And those are very rare times they actually bother making a topic outside of benching a game or retro discussion.

If they make a mistake I'm sure they would love to hear about it and improve, like any normal human being.

They are not barking a developers and say "WE ARE RIGHT. TRUTH IS THE TRUTH" like this lunanic at TI.

I mean look at TI's quote "The thing is if I'm right about something I'm right even if you don't like my tone or think I'm harsh or just don't like me for some reason none of those things make me any less right. The truth is the truth it's bigger than me it's bigger than threat interactive and it belongs to the world consumers" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

How does anyone get to that end of the video without bursting in laughs. Holy main character syndrome.

I want a DF video to end like that, PLEASE. Just for entertainment.
Like I said, I'm not on anyone's side here. I'm just hoping to get a proper joust of words between both involved parties for entertainment's sake. TI comes across as a teenager and teenagers do what teenagers do. That being said, it doesn't mean that someone with a bad attitude can't make a legitimate point. As for TI shitting on my work, I don't really care about that at all... If you ignore the noise, the posturing, the teenage exuberance, the point TI is trying to make is the performance cost of certain techniques need to be evaluated. Questions need to be asked about whether the technique in question being used is right for the hardware available. That's a fair question to ask and it's something worth discussing.

I will unsubscribe from DF when Threat Interactive releases its game that will have AMAZING graphics that will blow everyone away with its optimization, and that will run INCREDIBLE on older PC systems. Deal? I mean, that was their goal from the get-go. That's why they've been criticizing other devs. So, give me receipts of your amazing optimization.

Why would they not be able to? They can if the criticism makes sense!
TI´s criticism doesnt make sense because it´s false information!

Probably becasue PC players only cared about Nvidia and their RTX stuff?
Are you blaming them for catering to what their audience wants?

DF cannot even make any suggestions at all because they don't even have the required experience to even make recommendations.

Well if you say so, but please explain this:

And please link to any proof of TI having done ANYTHING in game dev!

He comes across as a spoiled kid.

Back in the day we played Ocarina of Time at a miserable interlaced resolution with the characters only consisting of 50 polygons, all textures were a blurry mess and it ran at 24 fps avarage.

And we loved it!

Grandpa Boomer GIF by MOODMAN
I don’t think the issue is blurry textures, low internal resolution or 24 fps. The issue to me has always been around TAA which those old consoles did not suffer from. I rather play a game with low resolution that be a ghosted smeary mess when any amount of movement is present.

The reliance of taa this gen is downright scary… relying on it not just to improve image quality/shimmering but also when you remove it on pc it fucks up character hair rendering, ray tracing sometimes even lod. What is going on

Well, he's not wrong about bad practices in modern games and the overreliance on flawed techniques to make up for the lack of optimization.

And he's not wrong when he says that DF (and many others) plainly ignore the issue. Many modern games have the same issues, that are downplayed or ignored in the name of *shiny new thing*.

I don't care who's more likable: 2x speed, mute and subtitles for me almost always on youtube xD

Its known that DF are biased as hell to some brands. They used to provide good analysis 13 or 14 years ago, since then they have become very corporate with clear agendas.

Only series I like is DF Retro and John content and commentary in general.

They don't... DF is notorious for using the kiddy gloves when dealing with developers they have relationships with... Then they throw smaller irrelevant devs under the bus so they can try to keep an air of "objectivity".

They're not catering to what their audience wants. They rarely criticize Nvidia period when the collection of other well known, reputable pc reviewers levy criticism.

Literally none of those have anything to do with writing code which is what is being discussed here.

Look, if you like DF, that's fine. You're doing way too much especially since they're not paying you...

They should deliver their "amazing innovative" game first instead of trashing everyone around you. While asking for monetary support.

This sounds like a scam to me. Obviously he knows some shit (or is very good at presenting it) but they way he speaks, his tone, his website and how he market his game in the making. Sorry, pal, this ain't it.

I am not subscribed to digital foundry for their opinions on graphics. I am subscribed to them because I am a multiplatform user and their performance tests (which are all simple and evidence based) help me decide which version to get or to avoid a game outright

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Jokes on them, I'm not subscribed to Digital Foundry.

I only care about their Retro vids.

Everything else they do got very stale a few years back. I get it, new card make pretty ray tracing. Not sure why this means it makes a game good.

why would i sub to to df in first place lol, they are all insufferable in their own unique ways, batusta takes the cake.
i kinda like john's retro stuff, though he is also bit of a weirdo, prone to public nervous breakdowns every 6 months or so

You dont need to have coding experience to know how those things work, I never coded anything either but you learn alot of things through gamedev experience.

Look, if you like DF, that's fine. You're doing way too much especially since they're not paying you...
I dont have to like DF or get paid to realize they have at least some knowledge, where TI only pretends to have!

Knowing about something and knowing something are two completely different things. When we're talking about graphical techniques and optimization, they yes you need to know.

Like I said, you're arguing a little too hard for no reason at all. DF are nothing more than hobbyist journalists. Nothing more, nothing less.
