Smite and Paladins are ceasing development

Paladins lasted almost a decade. Good on them.

Smite 2 is still in Beta phase 2 (I think). I thought they said they were stopping development on Smite 1 to focus on Smite 2. I think Smite 2 is safe.

I thought Hi Rez was a great studio at one point, looks and sounds like they've been slipping the last couple of years or so. Hopefully they keep their footing and don't shut down.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

They've kinda been slipping ever since Realm Royale. To their credit, they acknowledge that some of their misses were simply not working before waiting too terribly long, but I don't think they ever recaptured even a sliver of what made Smite and Paladins as enduring as they have been.

Smite 2 is literally smite that just looks slightly better. It's the same thing and they wonder why they're failing to make money.

Marvel Rivels has probably brought the last few players over from Paladins. I didn't think Paladins was that bad, but I only played it for a short time.

I started playing Smite regularly in 2014 and I only stopped playing it in 2023, because Hirez started focusing on Smite 2.

I tried Smite 2 recently and I was disappointed, because it's just Smite with a little better graphics and a lot less stuff.

Smite deserved better.

Paladins was actually a success, but they made too many games after then that just seemed to be jumping on trends and failing to catch them. Smite had a slowly declining population and some pretty extreme cosmetic monetisation. Smite 2 early access barely has any of the monetisation of Smite. Smite 2 was needed because the ageing engine was creaking at the seams, it performed badly and crashes were common. They are though stuck in a world where it is very hard to attract enough fresh players to something that isn't Roblox, Fortnite, et al.

People play these?
If you're being serious, then some of you still look at this wrong. This is equivalent to two decent MMOs being shut down back in the 2000s. It's not that no one ever played them, it's that people played them, the games hit their peaks, and then the numbers slowly dropped and dropped until it wasn't sustainable for a dev budget anymore.

That was the life of an MMO back then and will be the life of most Gaas titles today. It's simply how they are.

They are multiplayer games you experience in the moment and then that moment eventually passes, so you are left with fun memories of them. A game's servers being left on for as long as possible when the player count is around low triple digits, is a gift.

Paladins, one of the best competitive online game I've ever played, I was loyal until until just recently but damn, devs really didn't know how to get their shit together regarding bugs and lag.

I tried switching to Overwatch but it's just not the same, it's... way simpler, way more unbalanced, way slower... I wish they make Paladins 2 one day :'(
