I actually played Balatro a LOT, and I empathize with you quite a bit. After a while, I didn't think it was a good game...just an addicting game. I wasn't enjoying myself, it was just too addicting to put down, so I forced myself.

Definitely not GOTY contender

Addiction seems to be what people want in gaming right now. It's really quite ridiculous to watch.
 
Have you actually played Balatro?

You all complain about the lack of creativity in the industry, but you want to play the same thing over and over again.
  • SH2 & Persona 3 are remakes
  • Stella Blade, while incredibly polished, does absolutely nothing that hasn't been done countless times before, and better in most cases
  • Dragon's Dogma is a very good, very average game
Zelda and Unicorn Overlord just lost to the numbers game. This isn't as controversial as you're making it out to be. Embrace variety. Especially when it's genuinely good.
 
Looks like by commitee, the default game of the year nomination line up for TGA will always include one indie or low budget game. What really dissapoints me is including Erdree which is a DLC. Even if Elden ring was a great game, the Erdree should have not been qualified due to the fact its a DLC. Stellar blade should have taken its place.

Balatro is an incredibly good game. It wouldn't be my GOTY, but to claim it shouldn't be in the conversation, given how popular it is, is more than a little silly.
 
No way this game is pushing the medium forward which the GOTY should be about. Next year they will nominate a technical demo.

GOTY material? Hell no, but better than the diarrhea clouds of dragons fugma 2.

If Rockstar knows what's good for them they should delay GTA6 to avoid Pong next year.They should be terrified of it.

It seems mandatory for one indie game to appear in the list, they just took one with the highest critics score, because it doesn't matter which one it will be, everyone know that it won't win in any case.

It's a poker hand rogue-like deckbuilder. It's hard to compare it to any other game because it's quite unique. Like TommyCronin6969 TommyCronin6969 said, it's one of the most innovative and original games since Tetris (and similarly addicting).
 
It's a fantastic, well designed and addictive game?.
I'd rather have Balatro win goty than a fucking remake.

But also they've always liked to have at least one indie or smaller budget game in the nominees. They nominated Stray one year and that one wasn't even half as good as Balatro

Well there are several reasons, but none of them are good and they aren't going to change any time soon, if ever. The Golden Age of gaming has passed. We are currently in The Corporate Age.
 
I don't like seeing Quantum Leap used as meme stuffs.

Reviewers and game awards aren't worth a damn these days. That should answer the question.

I'm not suggesting that OP is doing this, but I've been seeing a lot of people pulling the 'BbBbBut ItS GaME oF THe YeAR' argument lately

It's like a badge of honor for some. Especially when they guessed it right. You'll also see people pull up their previous posts, quote it and say 'called it!'
