Would it be sensible to wait for him to watch it in 3-4 years or so when it is more appropriate? I think they were tying to follow the audience growing up with the movies. Same as the Deathly Hallows not meant for the 9-10 years old the Philosopher’s Stone was meant for.

If that's true then that's absolutely dumb for a franchise like Sonic.
How far does this go? Will Sonic 6 have Sonic slicing people open and feature hard-core sex scenes? Will it show Knuckles giving Tails a hand job after caving in someone's face?
Completely nonsensical for a franchise like Sonic, which should always be suitable for the youngest members of society.

Eh, Sonic has always been a young adult/adolescent IP. It's the whole late 90s/00s skater culture sort of thing.
I doubt they're going to go beyond that, and I think it was quite clever to build it up to that.

Just got back from watching it with my kid. Good silly fun. Love to see a new generation having Sonic be a part of their childhood too.
If I could go back in time and tell my younger self that there would be a live action Sonic movie with Jim Carrey and the voice of Keanu Reeves I would’ve lost my mind.

You’re jumping to conclusions a bit there. Nobody is saying Sonic should go that hard, but the games and comics do take on darker stories as they continued but still within a PG level. The movies should obviously be true to that.
You can do dark storytelling without doing what you’re suggesting, which is really more edgy than dark.

It's early, but just looking at domestic numbers Sonic 3 destroyed Mufasa.
Liked it quite a bit. 11 yo loved it, it was a bit too much for the 8 year old but she doesnt like violence or anger, then she asked "when is son8c 4 coming out?" because
Oddly enough the Jim Carrey stuff is what she liked the most. They REALLY stretched that 122 mill budget, it had better effects than most films costing 2 to 3 times as much.

I feel like they elevated the Jim Carrey zaniness to keep the kids engaged. The kids in the theater with me also enjoyed his scenes way more than Shadow's.

Shadow saying "Don't tell me you have a new catchphrase" implies Sonic used at least one other "catchphrase" earlier in the movie and is just trolling with it.
I don't think it's Sega's way of saying "this stupid meme is now his official catchphrase, effective this movie"

I think the edgiest darkest Sonic content imaginable is still for kids, but we should be able to discuss more or less dark within that context.

You're too smart for this man. The whole point is that there is no Sonic content that is adults only. The idea that you got the impression adult-only Sonic content exists is strange.
The Lion King is an example of a young children's film with adult themes in it, I thought this would drive my point home easily.

Look at the recent Mario movie. That's a movie which can be enjoyed by people of all ages, just like the Mario games. Sonic 3 seems to be geared towards more young adults, making it less appealing to younger children.
My personal opinion is that Sonic as a franchise should always appeal to younger children.

That's fine, as long as you also think that Mufasa dying in Lion King makes that film geared more towards young adults/less towards younger children.
Otherwise there is a disconnect going on somewhere. I haven't seen Sonic 3 yet, but I know that the story is based on Sonic Adventure 2, which means it has some Mufasa-type dark themes motivating characters. I also know it has more silly kiddie stuff than the game did, as evidenced in this thread referring to Jim Carrey's over the top antics.
It strikes me as an opinion someone wouldn't have if they'd played Sonic Adventure 2 in the past. I have no doubt in my mind that this movie is just as much for kids as they have been, while perhaps frustrating older audiences slightly less, with human character wedding scenes replaced with a cool dark backstory for the antagonist.
A good analogy for Shadow might be Mewtwo. In the original Pokemon movie, Mewtwo was messed up because he telepathically communicated and made friends with the other Pokemon clone test subjects, all of whom failed and died except for him. When he learned his purpose, and thereby purpose of the entire lab, was to be a slave for humans, he was outraged. Well, I'm pretty sure the first Pokemon movie didn't push a single kid away from the franchise despite the inclusion of this dark motivation for Mewtwo. It was "more adult" without being especially for adults.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles if you collect all of the Chaos Emeralds you can start collecting Super Emeralds. If you collect them all, Tails and Knuckles can both turn super. Tails gets a swarm of birds that attack enemies for you and Knuckles' glide has a screen shaking impact that (IIRC) kills enemies.
Sonic also benefits, getting Hyper Sonic mode where he cycles colours and his double jump kills everything on screen.
We never saw that again, but it did happen.

Saw it last night was really good. I like the heavily inspired by SA2 story that was not the same, just remixed. It adapted to be a movie while still hitting all the needed game notes, which is some sort of bizarre anomaly of nature. Robotnik was a smidge too over the top IMO but they did get away with it, mostly because Jim Carrey acting over the top is its own thing lol. That's pretty much my only complaint with the whole movie...

Kind of. When Sonic first attempted to confront Shadow in the game, he was shocked at how easily Shadow was able to evade his attack, but he was using a chaos emerald to warp using chaos control. In the movie, Shadow teleports as if he using chaos control without holding an emerald. In the game though, rather than use it to fight he simply warped away to meet his goals quicker. By the end of the game Sonic can also use chaos control which is necessary for the late game fight with Shadow, so it's implied attempting to fight him without the technique is impossible.
Edit: I just remembered the little between-level fights where after you land a few hits on the other to "win" the fight, it's interrupted the same way regardless which character you're playing. Sonic and Shadow sparred in one of these, so I guess fighting Shadow wasn't impossible without knowing Chaos Control...lol

I actually feel that Jim Carrey is redeeming the second half of his career with these movies. He is good at family friendly fun. Hopefully he keeps doing these Sonic movies.
Sonic is a VERY RARE trilogy where each movie is good for what it is. Star Wars 4-6, Back 2 the Future, LotR, Spiderman trilogy, Batman trilogy, Hunger Games, Indiana Jones 1-3, Harry Potter, that is about it.

Every time he's been described by Sega he's supposed to be on par with Sonic. Even that's a lie though since he could take his inhibitor rings off at any time and tear his head off. Sonic might be slightly faster but Shadow can teleport and use like a dozen abilities.

Thought the movie was pretty terrible. Sonic and his friends get their ass beat through the entire thing. The only time Sonic gets a "win" is when Shadows taunting him into trying to kill him since they're about to blow up the earth anyways. Then he's shown to last longer in Super and save the day with Robotnik. If that wasn't bad enough, the end credits has him being saved yet again by Amy casually beating like ten Metal Sonics.

I agree, I liked Shadow best in his debut game where he had perfect parity with Sonic unless he was holding a chaos emerald. In-gameplay, he felt exactly like Sonic but you were reminded he was only as fast because he had rockets on his shoes, which Sonic didn't need, so it was like they look care not to "out-sonic" Sonic.
His origin story of being the ultimate life form created by Gerald using alien DNA was also tossed now he just emerged from it himself as an alien. Except Gerald's obsessive research on perfecting life tied the story together, because his motivation to commit so much research was to find a cure for Maria's terminal illness -that's why she was there. Which also makes it easier to see why he went mad when GUN killed her -and in the game, the gunshots connected directly, not through a side-explosion.
