Sonic X Shadow Generations | Review Thread

Thick Thighs Save Lives

NeoGAF's Physical Games Advocate Extraordinaire
Dumb to count KNY here (especially since it kinda ruins the whole pic). It was published by Aniplex, just licensed to SEGA for localization in the West.
It's not that serious as it was just a random pic that was shared underneath Genki's tweet, and that's why I even put it under a spoiler tag.

Sonic Generations had the most inoffensive nothing of a story and they STILL thought someone might cut themselves on those safety scissors. All this while making it a tie in for their edgiest character. What does that say about their future products? What else will they sanitize from their past?

Ya get tired of seeing every series ya love getting hijacked by insufferable moral busybodies that bark louder than any bitch I’ve ever seen.

Agree. The game was for kids and still got things changed for the sake of what? And people think you shouldn't bother 'because'.

Instead of eating things completely, they take little bites to cause this behavior on people.

I remember people going nuts when they replace the Spider-Man actor from the game, even IGN made articles about. You don't even spend much time playing Petter as a student, most of the time you are with a mask.
But was OK to complain.

Some things were changed for the better. The original had them not remembering Chemical Plant but in this one they clearly remember it.

The actual remaster of the original is really good. Even better than the FPS boosted BC version. Worth it to upgrade.

Biggest improvement is the loading but on PS5 there really shouldn't be any.

As if anyone gives a shit who the messenger is. What the dude is pointing out is the problem.

It is nice to see a great game get such a solid remaster though. The gameplay was already a blast so clean performance and less jaggies is undoubtedly a win.

Completed Shadow Generations with all chests, all bolts, and S ranks and this has been the most fun I had with a 3D Sonic game since Unleashed.

Level-design is excellent, we are finally back to the quality of Unleashed. Generations is quite weak compared to it (it already was compared to Unleashed anyway), but Shadow is a must play for anyone interested in Sonic games or a good platformer overall. As with all good Sonic games, it will be a blast to come back to every once in a while for a couple hours, the time to go through all stages again.

What do you mean "Sanitise"? What the fuck was in a Sonic story that was so dramatic and avantgarde? Apart from the human princess that kissed Sonic? Which I think we are all fairly comfortable with saying should be sanitised.
Stop whining over nothing consequential.

I spent most of my time trying to rebeat Sonic Gens but what I've played of Shadow so far, I'd agree. The levels are a whole nother league. Sonic gens levels weren't bad but just don't compare.

Sonic fans, enjoy a rare 80+ Metacritic while you can. No doubt more reviews will drag it down to 78/79.
Still at 80% with far more reviews than Sonic Gen 2011 💪🏾.

It's not surprising since the Shadow campaign could be the best 3D Sonic with Adventures and Unleashed best parts.

Shadow Generations and Sonic Dream Team's only flaw is their short duration.
It's a fantastic news for recent Sonic, they just need more stages, more updates to be great. (Only remasters of old inferior games and dumb gamespot reviews are dragging Shadow gens down)

EXCELLENT ;)

The game is wonderful. Hope this is the new direction for the Sonic team with one side giving us the boost style gameplay and the other line giving us Frontiers style gameplay

I see 4 directions:
1) High Budget Frontiers 2 (every 4 to 5 years)
2) Shadow DLC style every year.
3)Sonic Dream Team updates (new stages every year)
4) The return of Sumo/Haedlights Sega Tennis/Racing spin offs.(Midori rumours)

I think Sonic fans will eat good.

As far as I can tell you don't have a point.

Sonic "lore" is such a fucking mess, that it doesn't fucking matter if some of it gets changed or altered. We lost nothing of value from Gens original story. Oh no, Sonic now isn't palming Amy's face any more, boo hoo, woe betide me. Rouge isn't as sexualised as she was in the past. Such a tragic loss. If you're scared they're gonna file away the edginess (which peaked around Shadow and 06; two of the worst stories ever told by a Sonic game), then all the power to you.

probably Shadow Generations will be the formula for a new trilogy I mean open world hub and linear stages but without the use of 2d stages, while Frontiers 2 could be the last game using the Frontiers formula.

I know that I am enjoying the fuck out of it. Shadow's levels are amazing. Rail canyon is nostalgic and fun, and I keep replaying that stage. People, or rather...fake fans losing their minds about censorship on some non-human looking midget character, and it isn't even gameplay related, is always humorous and weird. Stay mad while I enjoy my game.

I just hope that SEGA will do a Capcom style approach for RE

Having one line of the team making a classic Boost style Sonic and the other line making a Frontiers style Sonic game. Sort of like how Capcom does remakes and also a brand new version of RE

I hope we get a new Sumo Sonic racer for sure.

Really looking forward to next Frontiers game given how well the team handled their 1st step at a more Open world Sonic game and now can really build on that going forward.

And people complained when the Tomb Raider remasters had a trigger warning at the start. It's still a much better solution than censoring an older game and getting an inferior version.

I like the success that Sega is having, its three big games from 2024 sold 1 million on launch day, signaling that we can expect much higher total sales. But for me this success only has value if it at least provides us with something like a GameGear 2 otherwise it's like they're bankrupt in my eyes.

I mean considering you couldn’t figure out what “sanitize” means it’s not surprising.
I know full well what it means.
You just haven't explained what exactly has been "sanitised". Why don't you list it out and explain why those things being "sanitised" is bad, instead of dodging the question with "you don't understand"?

I'm just happy SEGA Japan is back on the consoles in a big way and also making great games and hopefully the funds will pay for SEGA to continue it

and they are paying for Sega, for example, to open physical stores in the Parco complex in Shibuya close to Nintendo, Capcom and Pokemon stores as well as stores around the world through partners starting in Shanghai. This makes me happy.

I agree the Shadow levels are really good, but still leaves me wanting the same thing the base game did with better analog stick control. I hate Sonic games where he goes in a small circle like he's on roller skates to change direction. I figure I'll play through this once and revisit a stage here and there. I need a game with good control to keep playing it 25 years later like Sonic Adventure. That said, the control and physics of the base game seem better. I only did one 2D level but I swear they fixed how bad the physics used to be, they were godawful before for classic Sonic. On Switch I'm also getting perhaps better button response for razor thin jumps than the PC version (both of them utterly annihilate the PS3 version).

I’d much rather see them make a Dream Team-style game every couple years, with a mega focus on level design. Frontiers lacked a lot of focus for me, and so I’d be happy to see them figure things out with more focused games every few years. Do that, and continue the classic series with a sequel to Superstars, and I’d be pretty pleased.

Just research all Sonic games released and see for yourself. If you don't like Sonic, then it's another story...

I like Sonic, and 70% seems generous. Most with mass appeal, that is, no ingredients that would turn off anybody, are Genesis titles. My favorite non-Genesis title, Sonic Adventure, is still a massively flawed game that I would only recommend with caveats. And that's the high point of 3D Sonic gaming. Sure, other games do other aspects well, like Unleashed introducing Boost, but also chuck problems at you like unskippable half hour werehog stages and QTE. Gens finally gave us a pack of speedy levels with no gimmicks, but with Heroes style roller blade control. Frontiers let you adjust your own controls, but lacked focus and looks like a messy pop-in fest.

Sonic ends up being a mixed bad of shit and disparate good ideas that I wish they would combine into one game already. I think the main feature of a Sonic game is actually controlling/being Sonic (ever since Sonic 1) so if they mess up the way it feels to control him with an analog stick, they can add the best level designs and graphics we always dreamed of on top of that even for a third Gens expansion, it will still be a meh Sonic game to me. He's supposed to have feet, they nailed it in the first 3D game already, so my standards are set.

After playing six Shadow acts, I was "entertained" but my primal Sonic itch wasn't scratched. I switched to SA and blew through all ten levels in about 40 minutes, and felt better.

Play Sonic P-06 I'm begging you, the game is the adventure formula perfected and showed that Sonic 06 wasnt a fundamentally flawed game

Still at 80% and the number of new reviews are very rare now...
On top of that, the last reviews are above 80% which means it will be even more complicated to reach 78%...
