Sony removes 8K from PS5 box

I can't believe it hasn't been a massive class action over this lie, I guess since it is Sony everyone gives them a pass

If I am correct, it was also displayed on Xbox boxes no ?

Shitty practice that has been common for ages, displaying on boxes technical specs that were actually never attained in any game.

Good, ban that shit. We can't even use 4K TVs properly yet, not for gaming and not for TV even.

Anyway wait until next gen with more upscaling tech in these consoles.
The box will be like 32K!!!!!!!*
*upscaled from a native 720p

8K won't be a thing because movies won't move beyond 4K.

Hollywood isn't mastering anything above 4K because the information you can pull from a 35MM negative doesn't do anything above 5K.

There are 6K cameras (all the Marvel and Star Wars movies are filmed with a 6K IMAX camera) and 8K camera, but everything is being mastered at 4K.
Movies are too reliant on CGI's these days and to meet Hollywood deadlines, the most common resolution for VFX is 2k, so, is worse than we think, movies are shot at 6k, downsampled to 2k to match the CGI then upscaled back to 4k, this is why old movies shot with film look much better in 4k. This can change once CGI target resolution increases, the industry is definitely moving into that direction.

8K may be too much for traditional games with good anti-asiling, but would still be good for other cases. In VR "4K" resolution (8 milion pixels) still looks worse than 1080p flat, more like 720p. For office work 8K would be nice to have as well. I'm using a 4K 27 inch monitor and if I turn off subpixel rendering I can clearly see a degradation in text quality. If I open paint and draw some lines the jeged edges are visible from my normal distace, but if I move back twice as much they become invisible, so 8K would have that effect from up close.

The games I would just keep at 4K if they have good AA, since while playing something like Breath of The Wild emulated in 4K the aliasing still bothers me.

They should probably also remove that 4k/120, lmao

My thought exactly. Which game can do 4K 120 fps on the PS5, or for that matter, which game can do 4K 60 fps ? The 'performance' mode of any game that hits 60 fps, is usually running at 1440p or 1800p.

PS5 Pro leaked image, the new switch comes with every PS5 Pro in the box. I like this no-gray area simple TV/Game option. If these hook-ups seem alien to you, it is because there are new state-of-the-art high bandwidth connections for 8k TVs and beyond. The future looks bright people take a moment and drink it in deep. :messenger_beaming:

A scam too! All game consoles make stuff up to try and sound better.
It was never meant to play games in 8K. I think what they meant was watch videos on 8K TVs. Which does work. My friend uses the PS5 to watch media on his 8K TVs. I think Sony projected 8K TVs being more prominent, but no one is buying them. There's just not enough content and it's still really niche. We're 5-10 years away from 8K at the very least.

Those stickers are for advertising features PS5 is supposed to support.

After 3.5 years, PS5 (allegedly, I don't have a capable display to check) doesn't autodetect a connected 7680 × 4320 display and output any content at that resolution, natively or upscaled to it.

That's something they should've considered before printing lies on the packaging for years.
I'm not going to argue with your fair point, just maybe shed some light on what's going on on the other side of the table..
They've got a box that has no problem with outputting an 8K display at the time as there were a growing number of panels in the shops advertising the same thing. Now, Sony is a multi business company with interests in almost every tech category there is. Who decided to put that 8K sticker on the box? The PlayStation division? I don't think so. That was probably put there by Sony HQ. Gambling on the 8K craze and the ability to look at your 8K camera captures on an 8K panel, or watch 8K videos etc. I'd call it "Investor padding", you can call whatever you want. I can imagine the PS representative just delivering a nod at the HQ table.
As everyone now knows, 8K didn't really take off (thank god), so that initial "gamble" didn't pan out. With that said; Did Sony step on a crapper?, yes they did.
Should they be reprimanded for it? Yeah probably.

8K isn't even a thing right now tbh......no need for them to list it as a selling point, IMO. The same thing happened with 3D tv's, whole lotta nothing.

3D TV was so awful, nobody wanted it or were asking for it and every high end TV had to go chasing that bullshit. So glad people came to their senses and it died out.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown runs at 4K/120 on both PS5 and XSeX

Astro's Playroom runs at 4K/60 and we can assume Astro Bot will also

Yup. Nobody cared about 3D.

I remember when it came out, 3D glasses were like $200 each.

Then a couple years later when 3D tv fizzled out and companies were trying to get rid of it, I remember LG selling 8-packs of 3D glasses for like $49.99.
