Sony will stop producing Blu-Ray recordable media

I was hoping the PS6 will still have an add-on for physical media, but chances are it might be a digital-only console.

Looks like this news is just about consumer grade blu-ray media. Sony will still sell blu-rays for businesses like movie studios (e.g., Disney, Paramount, etc.). And yeah, this doesn't really have any relation to the gaming side.

In surprising news, Sony has announced it would cease production of recordable Blu-ray discs and its other consumer physical media by February 2025. Aside from Blu-ray, it includes MiniDiscs and MiniDV cassettes as well, and no ‘successor models’ is planned for release. However, recordable discs are consumer-oriented products; the PlayStation maker will still sell Blu-rays and other storage media for business.

Edit: It looks like a shitty machine translation from tomshardware (the article in the OP).

But this move to streaming libraries, where there is no ownership and the movies and shows you watch could simply disappear without warning, reminds us how fleeting life can be.

I hope this is only regarding recording media and they will still output movies on UHDs and have a disk drive (even as optional) for PS6.

That said, yeah, being locked to PSN with digital only without 3rd party stores is a non-starter if that happens.

This 100% means PS6 will not have a disk drive. If they're ending production now and winding down the business, they won't be manufacturing any in 2-3 years.

Digital is always only licenses for the most part. Selling licenses should be illegal.

Digital vs Physical is the wrong concern. Digital is way better than physical when it comes to preservation. Digital is a dramatically better user experience. Clinging to physical is backward and untenable.

The problems that make you want to keep your plastic discs could be resolved digitally. There's no technical reason you can't gift and resell digital licenses but of course all platforms and publishers oppose it. There's no technical reason you can't digitally back up your Playstation games in the event of servers going offline, Playstation puts restrictions in place. These could be legitimate political battles. There are also other solutions which are socially ambiguous.
