Starfield Shattered Space |OT| Is that the Great Serpent or are you just happy to see me?

Man I can't believe some people here are defending the atrocious loading times lol, I have a fast computer abd they are fast, this doesn't change the fact that those loading screens shouldn't be there on the first place on a fucking next gen game
Exaggerate in an OT where people are actually playing the game and you’re obviously getting called out on it. Try exaggerate a complaint in the Astro Bot or Wukong OT and see how that goes.

Look at the Spider-Man 2 comparison I posted, Starfield loads as fast but instead of an animation with net swinging Starfield just do a simple fade out > black screen > fade in sequence during the same time. Not the best design for sure, could’ve hidden it with an open door/hatch sequence. But you’re not going to spend half your time looking at loading screens…

Not long now!

We need a review thread so haters can go there instead.

In my estimate, game has 10% extra loading screens than it needs to have.

Those too are 2-3 seconds fade in-out. I wouldn’t even notice them if they weren’t talked about so much.

Remove all loading screens- which game does that and is rpg and persistent elements?? Other games that are space sims, they don’t have loading screens cause there is nothing to load. Games are stripped down to basic ship and planet surfaces.

I’m about to finish my last quest for the Crimson Fleet line, then the final main quest mission tonight.

Off and on for a full year. This game has a ton of issues, but it’s my personal game of the generation. It ticks off all my checkboxes.

I don’t know if I’ll jump in at launch with the DLC. I want to start Ghost of Tsushima. I think after that, I’ll jump in with the DLC.

That's true. I personally think Starfield took that disparity to a new level.

Agreed 100%. I have no idea how far I am into the main story, but it went from being somewhat promising to total shit very quickly. Bethesda main stories have never been great, but this is pretty bad.

It’s making me want to stop the main story and focus on all the side missions and faction missions. Is that a mistake? I did read some people saying it’s better to mainline the story first.

Doing side quest stuff first is the way to go. Especially with the side quest rewards.

edit: Just realized I might spoil things for you so removed what I said before. I'll just say that I think it much more advantageous to knock out the side quests first, imo. Others who have finished the game might disagree, but.....eh.....well, I'll leave it at that.

Punished Miku Punished Miku has more experience in the game than anyone I know so I'll ask if he can give his take on that without spoiling the main quest ending.

Also, thanks to whoever gifted gold. 🙏

I never finished the main story. Those Frontier dullards were the worst. I like the crew in Mass Effect Andromeda better ffs. Did the Crimson Dawn questline all the way and went all space undercover cop and thought it was really good.

Tried to clock all kinds of loading on a 990 Pro. - Oooone…. Twoooo… T..Oh it’s already done?

The game must truly be horrible on console considering the constant talk about this.

Serious talk now. When deliberately playing to notice the loading, going between systems back and forth, what sticks out is how sliced up it is. Quick fade out-in loading, then orbit, where all you do when getting control, unless attacked, is going to the planet map and choose a landing spot. Then there is another quick fade out-in loading and a landing animation.

It’s not the best design. Too fractured.

They could’ve had one single and longer cool animation of a ship flying and landing if you choose the landing spot directly. No stop in orbit.

OR….
💡
They could’ve turned space traveling into an adventure in itself. Where you walk around on the ship and do ship duties and talk to your crew and gets interrupted by hijacking pirates or malfunctioning engines or asteroids.

THAT’s what I want! Fast traveling is overrated, it just cut away potentially fun gameplay. Always.

To not turn space flight into a too frequent and annoying interruption, the quest designer could make going back and forth between planets rare by doing more local quests.

This is one area where I think this expansion will improve the on-planet and quest experience. It’s an isolated place. Big enough to need the warthog and isolated enough to not send you off ping ponging around the universe to hunt for quest markers. And since it’s hand crafted the on-planet traversal should be more exciting.

Anyhow I’m just glad they’re improving the game and adds more content. I’m hoping they keep a small group of people iterating on it and making new content, Microsoft should pay the bill to make that possible. Space is the perfect place for adding expansions, there are no limits to what you can do.

Played a bit last night. No idea if it’s part of a quest I’ve forgot about but I stumbled upon a secret hideout location in a mountain. Nobody around, everything is broken, someone’s dad left a journal about sticking around until some big event is over, sounds like there are gravitational changes down below, the repeating loud noises, and it’s not one of those copy paste areas.
I’m excited to see what it’s about, probably a nothing burger regarding loot but it’s cool when you find new stuff after 300+ hours. Saved and went to bed before going further inside.

It isn't. 90% of my playtime has been on Series X and the load times are pretty much the same as on my PC (installed on NVME SSD). It would definitely be better if BGS had hidden the loading behind animations and transitions instead of mostly static screens (and I hope it's on their roadmap to do this), but I think the loudest complainers are the typical Bethesda haters latching on to something simple.

It's too bad Shattered Space is launching on a Monday instead of a Friday since it would be nice to have the weekend to delve into it, but as a software developer myself, I understand wanting to have plenty of time to squash any bugs that might crop up when it gets into the hands of tons of people. Looking forward to SS being a meaty experience along the lines of Shivering Isles and Far Harbor.

Thanks guys for the suggestion. I’ll focus more on the side content, which I’m finding MUCH more interesting.

I think this becomes an issue when game sends you to multiple locations in quick succession.

For any quest where I had to spend 1+ hr, I didn’t notice loading. Eg Sarah’s quest on Cassiopia.

Hopefully in future they design quests that are like that.

Going to different planets for different quests is coolest thing about the game. But once you land, you should stay there for a while.

Yeah longer local quests should be priority for upcoming updates.

Is Sarah’s questline interesting? Haven’t done any of that, thought she had an annoying attitude early on and kicked her off my ship lol
Never took her with me after that unless I had to.

You'll get the same attitude during the quest...But it seems to be the more developed quest of the companions.

I did most of the side stuff 1st. The main advantage of doing the main quest is rewards you can use on the other stuff. It really is an open game where you can tackle things in any order you want. The factions are the best for sure but there's a few cool side quests found randomly too.

Most people think United Colonies and Crimson Fleet are the best. Recommend leveling up a bit before Ryujin. Its all up to you though. Also dont skip Activities since those all turn into quests

This game looks amazing in play so far.. complaints seem unwarranted. And the load times seem non existent on my PC anyway. I was wondering where the Bethesda jank was until I got in the space and the planet skins didn’t load in.

Enjoying it so far no issues apart from that but.

Did you get Shattered Space early?

Yeah, I noticed the planet skin issue yesterday. lol

Did you install any mods from Creation Club? I had the issue once I installed the unofficial Starfield patch (ironic) and had to reinstall to fix it.

I had the planet skin issue yesterday as well hah, just restarted and it was fixed.

I'm on NG+2 and just goofing around with side quests, waiting on SS to release. This work day is going to take forever!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I checked the download expansion tab and it 'downloaded' the 15GB in like 3 seconds, must have pre-loaded as part of some previous or background updates.

I've been playing the base game over the weekend. Any way to level rapidly to 30 without stopping achievements?
I read that just killing high level beasts is good but it's still slow to me.

Killing stuff is the fastest.

I think there might be something to do with farming resources and building stuff.

Do report back with impressions if you get the chance old chap.

Stuck at work and can't play for another 2 weeks. :(

That's too bad brother. Yeah...I'll be jumping in right after work today.

Maybe sooner but don't tell anyone

Go to the Serpentis system with a good combat ship and just go from planet to planet and wait about 5 seconds; 3/4 of the time it will spawn in high level ships. Once you get to every planet just leave the system and hop back in.

For those that have played more recently, has recent changes and land vehicle addition made planet exploration worth it? That was my primary problem with the game. Unsure if it's worth trying the whole game again or just potentially the expansion only (I'd still have to others a bit regardless as I'm not level 35)

I'm still without internet service because of the storm so it will be a few days before I can check this out. Looking forward to impressions.
