Steam Next Fest: February 2025 Edition

It's like an N64 platformer. You can copy textures and their related properties and throw them to something else to change it. The opening has you absorbing vines and casting them onto a waterfall so it can be climbed. Amazing music too.

Corebreaker - Didn't really grab me. A competent 'room clearing' roguelite but I'd rather just stick to Astral Ascent, Neon Abyss or Trinity Fusion.

Reignbreaker - Big fan of the soundtrack and overall style. Not too sure about the rest of the package though. Combat felt a bit unintuitive if I'm honest but maybe that's because I'm just used to Hades and Ravenswatch so much these days. Will keep it on the wishlist for now.

Flash Made Fear - The wrong way to do tank controls. Lacked some QoL features as well. Cool throwback but not for me.

Post Trauma - The right way to do tank controls. Ain't nobody got time for that first padlock puzzle though. Maybe I'll check out the full release but I'll give it a miss for now (performance was woeful btw).

CyberTaxi: Lunatic Nights - Literally unplayable with the awful performance, buggy controls and broken UI. Probably a fun game to pick up on the cheap but this just screams "streamer game" to me. Meh.

Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom - Now this was excellent. Can't believe this has been out since last year already but this platformer just oozes style and character. It plays great as well so I'm definitely grabbing this, if only to bathe in its nostalgic N64 and Dreamcastesque summer vibes.

FUMES - Take Smugglers Run, Cell Damage and Mad Max and you have yourself an amazing Car-Combat-Em-Up on your hands. Love that it just throws you in as soon as you load up the demo. Perfect. Another instabuy when it releases.

Neon Inferno - Another brilliant gem that completely caught me by surprise. It combines elements from Beat-Em-Ups and run-and-gun games like Contra and offers up some neat gameplay tricks of its own as well. Not only does it play well but it looks even better! It really nails the retro visuals (which are customizable as well with filters and the like), something that so many other games fail at. Loved it.

States its a roguelike boomer shooter, which is the perfect summary of the game since it doesn't do anything original.
You enter a random map, shoot and end every map with a random power up. Boring and ugly. Pass.

Wanted to try this since I loved Arknoid back in the days. I would be better off just emulating Arknoid because this ain't it.
The idea sounds great on paper, the executions lacks severly. UI is horrible and the graphics are all over the place. Pass.

Oh man, who else but AVGN knows how to make a good old school side scroller. Fantastic game with the typical AVGN humor.
Recommended.

Game looks well made. There's comicbook style cutscenes with actual voice acting. Plays rather well just not my cup of tea.
Recommended if you're into this genre.

This game is fucking great. You're a delivery guy in a fully destructive world with wacky missions to complete.
Absolutely recommend.

Love raiding in WoW? Well, this ones for you I guess. I found it absolutely boring as fuck.
Pass.

Another great roguelite RPG idler, reminds me of Loop Hero.
Gameplay is solid, graphics are fine and is a perfect game to have running on a 2nd monitor.

Wasn't that bad as expected. I liked the parry system and the movement was well done. Artstyle and graphics are a bit off and it feels like a assetflip.
I don't know how to explain that one, its the way the aiming works and some UE5 games have this issue. Has potential though.

Wears its Bioshock influence in its sleeve. It not bad, gameplay feels fine. Enemies could use some work regarding animations and AI but a fun little shooter.

For a demo, the quality was top notch. The atmosphere, graphics and sounds were insane. Highly recommend this demo.

This one is really fun. Just my kind of game with driving, whacky physics, stylish setting, good sound design, and story beats. My only complaint is that for driving in reverse the directions are not inverted like every other driving game. Regardless, in my cannon this is about Jimmy (Bully) Hopkin's granpapi and I can't wait to see this story through in the full release.

Here I thought pixel art and run n' guns had peaked long ago and you recommend this beauty:

*The pictures hardly do it justice. The image quality is CRT heaven.

P.S. I can't remember the last time Steam Next Fest had this many bangers.

Can't add more than 10 steam links in one post so continuing:

Waited for 5 minutes but couldn't find a game.

This game looked intriguing as fuck and it kept that same feeling while playing it. The crunchy ass graphics fit perfect.
Don't ask me wtf happened, I have no idea but I liked it. Might need to get used to it but I recommend this first person dungeon crawler.

Yeah it really is a stunner. One of the best looking games I've seen in recent years, and I mean no hyperbole whatsoever.

A first person game that lacks the most basic options and is unplayable, without spewing up your lunch, for anyone other than the solo dev who uploaded it? That's not really narrowing it down for a next fest.

He Is Coming - Only played one match of this to know that I will enjoy the frick out of it. The definition of "moreish" basically and it nails the NES vibes. On the wishlist it goes!

Grit & Valor 1949 - Real-time Roguelike Advance Wars? I'll take it!

Dragonkin: The Banished - Could be good but I kept dying as the lightning character in the first dungeon lol (the supposed planned end-game activity that they give you access to during a demo?). Anyway, will wait for reviews for this one. Their previous ARPG was kind of ass (Chaosbane) and I regret picking it up at the time.

UNYIELDER - An absolute mess of a game. Does pretty much everything wrong. From the awful visuals, poor UI, horrific gunplay (screenshake is off the charts with just the base pistol alone), floaty controls, buggy menu, etc. Turned it off after 5 mins. Play Battle Shapers to see how it's done instead.

Tried a few semi-random games. Whisper of the House is a neat little decorating game with pixel art. Starts simple, but later on it seems to add new gameplay mechanics like cleaning. Not for me, but it's well made.

Simple pixel art RTS where you take the fight to the evil Capitalists for the glory of Communism. Deploy blocking units to encourage the penal troops to die gloriously for the cause and root out dissidents among your soldiers. Feels like a something Sega would have done for the Dreamcast.

Game where you raise a Dragon girl similar to Princess Maker. Demo however was Japanese only so it was hard to judge.

Super simple point and click puzzle game where you have to navigate life for a socially awkward giraffe. Not that interesting for me.

The Knightling - Seems lovingly made but the performance was shockingly bad, even on medium. I also couldn't figure out what to do during the first quest where you're meant to go the outskirts and investigate monster attacks. Ran around for ages only managing to solve 2 out of 3 requirements. Might snap it up on the cheap in the future, if they fix the performance that is.

Wartorn - Realtime RTS battler with roguelite mechanics. Interesting art style but also one that made the game look extremely blurry/muddy. Didn't really grab me otherwise.

Mecha BREAK - Lol so this is a meme of a game isn't it? I was very much looking forward to it after all the flashy trailers and what not but man... this just screams cynical GAAS slop! You can't even pause the game during singleplayer? Nice. I alt+f4'd after I saw the exploration hub complete with slow movement speed and hilariously over the top proportions of my lady character in real time. What the fuck lol. It reminded me of that erotic space game called "Subverse", miss me with that shit. Oh and apparently it comes with kernel level anti-cheat as well? Wondering how the hell I'm going to have to remove that.

If anything this has actually reminded me that own Daemon X Machina on PC and so I need to get on that.

Fellowship - Played it for 7 minutes and like someone else here said, it bored me to tears. A shame too as the world itself seemed well made. Just that everything else was undercooked. From the UI to the awful controlscheme, the combat, the animation, the sound design... No thanks. I guess if you're an old MMORPG-head then you'll find some enjoyment out of this I suppose. Definitely not for me.

Oddly enough I got stuck for a while in the exact same spot with 2/3 investigations, it wasn't super well designed. if you do try it again here was the three spots to investigate:

1. Pot of paint that was tipped over inside one of the pens.
2. You have to go inside the window of a different pen while the door is closed, there's claw/scratch marks on the inside of the door (this was the one I couldn't find)
3. A monster crushed underneath a crate at the biggest house

On one hand though, I do appreciate a game not being too hand-holdy.

The other quest I did, fixing the big water wheel, was much better and more intuitive.

I've looked at a lot of games and this was the most unique and fun to me. A 2d space survival sort of game where you have to manage resources and pilot a shuttle safely.

Thread seems to have slowed down big time. We need those recommends my NeoGAF brethren!

The rogue-like edition:

Dead Pixels II-Straight to video. Incredible retro-vhs 1980s and 90s zombie tribute 2D action game. Those easter eggs! That SOUNDTRACK!!

Drift Survivor 2. Simply brilliant fun. One of the few demos I have not deleted from the dozens I've been trying.

Driveloop. There's never enough action/rogue-like car combat games and this one is a riot!

Heli 100. A shump/rogue-light helicopter bullet hell that oozes charm.
