This game is the definition of mid.
It has good visuals, good OST that sort of plays on NieR nostalgia. But if i'm honest the gameplay is janky, platforming, jumping gaps, turning around is a nuisance. The weak air dash doesn't help either and activating run is a bit weird. The game gates basic stuff like fast wake up and 4 hit combos behind skill trees, which I think is a problem with modern gaming design in general. Some other questionable things are the lack of maps in the more linear stages, yet there is a map in the boring sandboxes. And fast travel was also a bit odd; first you need to go to the area, and then choose one within this area. Skipping dialogue is janky too, and its especially bad when replaying the game. Because the dialogue and story is shit to begin with. Side quest design is horrible MMO tier on average.
The combat is hot garbage. It suffers the same problem FFXVI also has; you do no damage. Go on; combo your bigger enemies. Its all there to build meter (which granted is better and more skillfull than FFXVI's solution of waiting out a fucking timer). If you are adept at perfect evades and parries, you'll have meter faster. If you want to use your 5 hit strings, you'll only handicap yourself because you will absolutely be punished.
The bonus on perfect evades is what FFXVI should've had at least. I just don't like drawn out combat. I want to do good damage with succesful combos or specials. I want to be able to juggle smaller enemies to mix the combat up. Each fight in SB plays out the exact same. I liked the game enough to beat it, but I never had the desire to return to it. I just hate the drawn out combat and its janky platform mechanics. Wukong has the same problem to an extent (barely doing damage with melee), but in that game you can make builds that absolutely destroy bosses in seconds.
I guess I had hoped for SB to have a bit more refined combat mechanics, and perhaps less RPG mechanics that slow down the pacing. But today everything needs to have 'content'.
