The more I'm playing of this, the better it is. I found my first "hard" difficulty level and let me tell you - I've got my ass handed to me numerous times. Still haven't beat it, moved on, and I'll come back later. It is definitely harder than any of the Mario World "star road challenge" maps - in fact in some ways it feels like one of those intentionally hard Mario Maker maps (though not as crazy).

The game's badge system is also a really neat idea and a fun take on the formula. As you progress through the game, you can unlock different badges - and you can only equip one per stage. You can change it on the loading screen. Each badge gives you a psuedo-powerup or ability. Stuff like giving your character the "Luigi jump" from Mario 2 or letting you float at the peak of a jump. I've also unlocked one that gives you ! blocks in the stage (similar to SMW again) that typically lowers the difficulty.

Yeah, this game is something special. It's a joy to play, and you can tell they put a lot of soul into it.

Bruh, my dick can only get so hard.

However, Mario's friends are without their trademark abilities that originated in Mario 2, which may throw some longtime fans from a loop. Luigi lacks his high-reaching flutter-jump, and Peach can't float-jump. Playing as these characters without those movement abilities felt a little off, and this does have the effect of flattening each character into an identical playstyle. There is no actual gameplay difference between, say, Toad and Luigi, and that can be hard to get used to.
Not surprising that a Mario game inspired Gamespot to reject socialism.

These stupid badges are the last thing I wanted to see in a 2D Mario game.
Idk, at first I was kinda disappointed the characters didn’t play any different, but the badges in the demo made up for that. I used one that gave me the Luigi jump(while I was playing as luigi) and the. I tested the one that does the charge jump when you hold down and it was neat.

Then I tested them to see if yoshi could use them since he doesn’t use power ups and he does. It’s a fun little compromise and want to try more.

Idk why but Mario looks hysterical while crouching and his nose popping out. Idk if you can walk like that, but you can jump forward and keep momentum.

I activated a wonder flower and then finished the stage like that crouched down with my nose hanging out and it made me laugh hysterically.

Do the stages have time limits? My daughter loves playing Yoshi's Crafted World, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom but one big thing about that is she loves to explore every level. She hasn't liked older 2D Mario games that we've tried because the stages have a time limit.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

No time limit on the stages themselves, but some stages have some time-based mechanics (like blocks that appear for a certain amount of time after hitting a switch, that you have to use to traverse certain areas)

Any fears I had that this game is channelling the NSMB brand are gone. Completely gone. It's got those tight and swift old-school Mario physics, bags of new ideas, and fearlessly marches forwards into the unknown rather than offering limp, sanitised nostalgia. It's fucking great.

Got my copy from Amazon today, was able to squeeze in a tiny bit, but not a lot, will dive into it more in the coming days. But I can tell I'll like it a lot.

Nope. No time limit. Just searched the first 3 levels and got all collectibles.

The 2nd level with the singing piranha plants made me laugh. This game is going to be amazing.

It gets even better in the late game, too! I feel like this will be one of the cases were user reviews will be even higher than the metascore.
If I remember Mario Wii and Mario U the last 3 worlds of each of those games were ultimate bangers. People giving their reviews on the first world or two are living in crazy land. The REAL good stuff is is always towards the end…

This makes me feel better. I didn't want another NSMB clone.

This is easily the freshest 2D Mario has felt in years. Really enjoying this. Playing with online really turns it up a notch, with the levels feeling more alive than ever seeing Mario’s friends in the background and also evoking some SMM2 multiplayer highs. It really feels like you’re out exploring the Flower Kingdom with Mario and co. Finding a secret spot because that Luigi bounced suspiciously too high is ingenius and no joke brings back early Dark Souls nostalgia. I couldn’t tell if I’d want to table this or Spider-Man for the night but I’m glad I started this.

Just played tge first 3 levels. I can already tell this is going to be something else.

Feels like a true new 2d mail. Its magic. Feels sublime to play.

I can't wait to see some crazy shit.

Online is great. It's awesome seeing other players on the map. Makes the game so much more interesting. It's actually good that people are ghosted otherwise it would be chaos.

At one point this other guy was going through a level the same exact way I was, like it was choreographed. Even made the same mistakes. It was wild.
