Switch 1 vs Switch 2 announcement trailer

i prefer 2

switch 2 is the same use of the original so no point showing that all off again.

Exactly. Switch 1 had to come out fighting and sell its new concept hard, which it did beautifully.

We already know the concept, we don't need to have it explained again. In fact the minimalism of the trailer for Switch 2 is pretty smart, it's basically saying it's the same thing again but newer and better.

Seems like all the leaks caught them off guard and they slapped something together to try and take back ownership of the marketing.

Why else would the delay between announcement and a proper showcase be so long (not til april!)?

They aren't ready yet. Odds are this isn't coming out until Autumn.

And of course none of this matters because it will still sell like crazy.

Edit: mouse functionality looks like it'll be kinda awkward feeling. Just at first glance.

My guess is they were going to show something like the Switch 1 reveal, probably more really, in a few months to begin with, maybe even that exact date 4/2.

But they had to react to leaks, so we got an "update" on Switch 2 first. Which feels bizarre.

I thought that if they focused on hardware, there would be something about it to see, and that games wouldn't be far behind. But now we see nothing until 4/2.

I think the timeline was supposed to begin later. They let it get twisted by leakers and thereby, faceplanted a very strong reveal, which they probably had planned.

This is how you announce a new system (you show games, normal usage, features of the console)

This is not how you announce a new system (you show nothing?)

Not sure how to add a POLL but which trailer is better?

The Switch 1 reveal needed to explain the gimimck of the system and how all of the functionality works.

The Switch 2 doesn't need to do that. And the expanded reveal will be in April anyway.

I really expected to see some software - at least something to catch the eye. Even just a few seconds, but Mario Kart doesn't do it for me at all. I know I'm in the minority there though.

Not the concept, but the games?
To be fair, for people that weren't aware of the leaks, or didn't see them, this would be super exciting for them. To know it's a thing, know what it looks like, and to look forward to a direct focused on it.

It's a different marketing strategy, sure. But I agree with diffusionx diffusionx . People definitely know what the Switch is, this is just the next iteration. Seeing more games would've been cool, sure. But they at least showed Mario Kart as a crumb, and in under 3 months we'll get a lot more. They honestly could've shown no game at all, so at least there was that.

Why did they have to react to leaks?

Weren't the leaks basically "It's an upgraded Switch that looks basically the same"

??? I dont get this logic

Nintendo only needed to continue on it's path. Sony and Microsoft chose not to follow. The only things competing in Nintendo's blue oceans are those PC handhelds and the Steam Deck. The new game is still afoot.

I'll probably have several again.

which again is exactly what nintendo have to do in order to avoid a Wii U situation. make it clear it's a new console with exclusive games.

It's a teaser to tune into their full on direct which I am sure will have games. This is no different than their normal Twitter Direct announcements, except it has a short video attached. Don't worry OP, I am sure you will be disappointed in the games too and will promptly tell us how doomed the switch 2 is to failure.

I think they'll focus in April on what kind of future toys or gadgets that can be put on the top USB-C.

Not really sure how you came to that conclusion. Nintendo games are almost always high quality.

Nintendo must love their fan base. Anyone else would be criticised if they said “ah, just same but better” and called it a day with a quick 2 minutes trailer. Not Nintendo hardcore, they see it as a plus, but then had they done a long presentation full of what makes it unique they would have celebrated it ;).

The Switch 2 trailer was perfect, it’s no more a new concept, right on the spot. Both are good, the first was better from the production value standpoint and explaining a new concept, but the Switch 2 was excellent showing what’s a Switch 2. A tie for me.

Series X didn't show any games either in the announcement trailer during the game awards.

They did show Hellblade 2 but that was a target cg trailer and not actual gameplay.

That's not to say this "announcement" was great. Even without the leaks, that is a pretty underwhelming trailer to replace 8 year old hardware.

This bogus trailer had more energy

I'm not even a Nintendo fan lol. I've been very critical of them historically.

I'm very, very glad they aren't leaning on a gimmick this time and are instead just giving us improved hardware. That's what I've been asking for for years.

It is still weak.

Same but faster? Not even Apple dares to make their phone launches like this and they make a new one every year :).

I think the vast majority of complaints about the Switch are that it's very dated. Most people just want more modern hardware and are very happy with the actual functionality/form factor of the Switch.

I'll pass on stupid dual screens or fake 3D or waggle controls. Just give me better hardware.

Whats there to show? Its literally almost the same device.
So far, there was quote a bit to show, new ports new controllers, larger size, bigger screen, new connections, the next mario kart was teased, learned Switch games work on Switch 2. That was quite a bit. But also they are hyping an even on 4/2/25 which I'm assuming will showcase new games.

This is Switch 2, not Switch Pro… or is it ;)?

Nah sorry mate this is a weak reactive trailer they hastily put together because of all the leaks.

Yes, it is their job to sell us on what better HW and the changes they made to the design are worth of a new console.

If many games stay cross gen a message of “do the same thing a bit faster” is… odd.

I can agree there. While I like some of the gimmicks of the past (dual screen, motion control) Nintendo has found a winning gimmick here with the switch docking. Leaning further into that with new hardware refresh is all I really wanted from them.

I think it would have been better to show no game running at all on Switch 2 than a samey looking Kart tbh. Bad reveal idea

I am a huge fan of the Switch , it literally changed my gaming habits and I am inclined to agree with you however,

Mario Kart 8 /DX has sold 70,000,000 + copies, the internal optics from Nintendo are clear. I actually think (as stupid as this will sound) that Mario Kart 8 is too good and Mario Kart 9 should be a few years out but that us a discussion for another thread

Interesting, I actually thought it was a bad idea exactly because everyone already has Mario Kart. When Nintendo revealed Switch 1, only 8 million people had Mario Kart 8. Now Nintendo just revealed a console with the same game that they just sold the whole world. Not just same IP, it looks too samey as a game I already own. I get the optics within Nintendo -people love Kart! Show Kart! But I don't think they thought the cunning plan all the way, etc.

What you forget is people already know how Switch 2 will work thanks to Switch 1.

Switch 1 was brand new, it had to show people how the unit will be used.

The only saving grace I see from that snippet is that the track designs appears to be open world, Forza Horizon style and that would be a welcomed addition. In that race you clearly have the option to got left at the beginning of the race and perhaps this race type is just more linear. Still the samey same look does not do the game any favors and that's coming from someone who thing Mario Kart 8 is probably the greatest racing game ever made regardless of genre. We just got the last DLC less than a year ago.

We'll see.

i think Nintendo just prioritize straight to the point presentation. whats important is the messaging is loud and clear.

no need to elaborate same things. worst case, people could end up misunderstood whole things and it is Wii U situation again.

For the game, it's a good thing. For the system? I thought this reveal was about the system, show a teaser of what it can do. Don't represent it with a Switch 1 game...good lord.

If they absolutely had to have Kart because...Kart, they could have fixed it with literally two seconds of something like Metroid. Like just enough time for Samus to turn 80 degrees and the Internet would just explode and dissect it in graphical minutiae.
