The First Berserker: Khazan Demo Live on PSN/XBL/Steam - Progress Carries to Full Game

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Some quick and dirty from the first 10 mins.

- 16GB on Xbox
- Performance and Quality modes
- Separate Frame Rate limiter toggle irrespective of graphics mode. Limiter seems to be 60 as Quality mode w/ limiter doesn't look / feel like 30.
- Difficulty options in settings but they seem to be greyed out until after you get to a certain point.
- Controls / feels very much like a Souls game.

Darkness no more
I only played the first 20 minutes to try it out quickly. It runs and looks very nice on my PC. Music is chill. Combat is decent so far. The only negative I have so far is the levels are mostly tiny tubes you follow. I ran ahead past tons of enemies before I stopped playing to see if it opens up a bit more but nothing yet. Hopefully the levels get a little bigger and more complex further in.

Same. I'm glad they went the Jedi Survivor route. Be a Soulslike but if I want to lower the difficulty to get past a difficult boss or area then let me do so.
Same. I'm married and got a little daughter now.

It took a lot out of me to beat the secret boss Erlang in Wukong and I'm proud of beating it three times with NG++ where the enemies are even stronger, but i long for the access to easier challenges now with life being full.

Played until first boss, maybe 25-30 min. It's pretty solid combat wise. It plays like a faster version of Dark Souls. It has a parry option and a dash option to utilize. Level design is not very good, but enemy animation and variety are decent

I was hoping it would have a deeper combat system like Nioh, with combos and skill trees to upgrade. That does not appear to be the case. You upgrade the stereotypical strength, vitality, and stamina stats, just like Dark Souls. I'm pretty tired of that gameplay loop in all honesty

It's been fun but unremarkable so far. I didn't like the first few hours of Nioh 1 either, so too early to judge fairly. I have only used starting weapon, dual hatchets so far

How did the parry feel? Was it generous? The game has skill trees and special moves. Different weapons too. The is plenty footage of the game on the web from the last open beta. Fighting Cowboy has a good playthrough.

The game is more inspired from Nioh rather than souls in terms of combat design and resources management logics. I think it will have huge potential for end game just like the Nioh series.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Gonna try this. Looks like dog shit but I’d love to be wrong.

Yoshichan Yoshichan can sound off as the local souls expert.
Is this even a Souls-like game? I know absolutely nothing about this game. Thanks for the @, I’ll be checking this out

Nevermind, there is a full skill tree for each weapon. This has me excited. This game definitely giving off some Nioh vibes. I'm even trying to instinctively Ki-pulse like in Nioh

Yeah I’m about 15 minute in and this is just a poor man’s Nioh and a ps3 game.

Not worth the demo install IMO.
Gonna try it anyway but 30gb for a demo is a bit much. Poor man's Nioh sounds like a bad time. Especially when Nioh 2 exists.

Edit: Tried it. Don't care for it.

Meh. It's just your by the numbers soulslike with the worst fromsoftware traits right from the beginning. Combat is slow and clunky. Stamina consumption and recovery speed is stupid and the opposite of fun. Level design with cheap deaths. Enemies chasing you through the whole level. First boss and it's already full of cheap garbage - two grabs, unblockable attacks, AOE with status cast. Easy skip.

This is the same so far as the beta that came out in November.
Differences :
- Game has difficulty options now (easy, normal) which can be selected after finishing the first level.

- They've adjusted/tuned the DMG output and general difficulty: besides the hyper armor bar, now, every hit also diminishes enemy's health WAY more compared to the beta, shit, I beat the Yeti boss on my 2nd try today in comparison to the beta where it took me a whole evening 😁

- Maybe I'm tripping but... performance seems worse now ? I'm noticing some framerate drops which I'm sure there weren't there in the beta (?), wtf...

- combat system is mediocre with the usual fast and heavy attack buttons, but, you can't combine them/do combos, It's one or the other. - EDIT: you can actually link fast and heavy attacks/do combos : you just have to unlock their specific skills via the skill tree.
- combat feeling doesn't feel meaty enough, It gives the impression that you're hitting/slashing at cardboard targets/enemies.
Lies of P and even Lords of the fallen do this much better (Lies of P especially).
- Parry mechanic is OK, the timing is still very tight, but, it isn't like the one in Lies of P where I found it almost impossible to parry even after 40 hours of gameplay.
Enemy tells are good and the timing, while not as forgiving as a Sekiro's are OK.

As for me, the cell shaded graphics Absolutely do not do it for me, this looks like a PS3 game at higher res and also, the level design is...bad - lots of small rooms connected via hallways basically.
Anyway, it isn't horrible or anything but, the main problem with the game is that it doesn't have an original bone in it, It's your typical, subpar souls like.

From what I played, there are much, much better soul-likes out there (black myth Wukong, Lies of P, Lords of the fallen) each for their own reason, this on the other hand gave me a bargain bin feeling, i am going to get it when it falls under 30 Eurodollars.

how is the exhaustion mechanic? Does getting hit by enemies still deplete your stamina to in such a rate as in the beta? Can't check for myself now

PS5 Pro support??

I don't think so. I've downloaded it on both my Series X and PS5 Pro. The Series X has two graphics options - Quality & Performance and a frame rate limiter for each option. The Pro has no graphics options but it does have the frame rate limiter. It looks to me that they've chosen to simply put the Quality mode only on the Pro because it pretty much matches the the Quality mode on Series X from what I can see. When running with the frame rate cap on it may be just a tad sharper on the Pro compared to Series X but perhaps I'm just seeing things. But if I'm not, then perhaps it's running at slightly higher resolution. If the game is using dynamic resolution then perhaps the Pro is pushing the dynamic resolution higher, but I dunno.

The performance on the Pro is better than the Series X when the Series X is in Quality mode. I found a section near the beginning of the demo where the Xbox was somewhat struggling. In this section, with the frame limiter enabled on both consoles, the Series X is generally around 45fps with dips to 41fps and highs around 47fps. I think it may have dipped below 40fps momentarily. The Pro is locked at 60fps in this section (well my TV says 59fps but I think that's just a thing with the TV - I think it's actually a locked 60fps). Unfortunately my TV is not telling me the fps of the Pro when I unlock the fps cap - it just keeps saying that it's 59fps - whereas it does work with the Xbox (in its performance mode). Maybe the game isn't enabled to run in 120fps mode on the Pro yet - that might need to be patched. So unfortunately I can't say how far above it goes above 60fps when the cap is unlocked. However the Pro does drop frames in other parts of the demo I've played but I haven't played much. I did see it go down to 55fps and I think 53fps in another section of the demo on the Pro.

They should put a performance mode into the Pro for people who want frame rate because in performance mode on the Series X it was often above 80fps and even hit 100fps (but also drops into the low 70 fps). If Pro had a performance mode it could likely get to 100fps more consistently and even 120fps I reckon. But maybe the lack of a performance mode on Pro is just a demo thing.

Man this demo is cash money.

I put over 250 hours into Wukong and I'm ready for the next meaty RPG, and this seems to be it.

I'm quite pleased that it seems to be more like NiOh as opposed to a straightforward Souls-like.

Can't adjust difficulty at any time. Guess I'm out.

BBWkXGE.png

Wolfy, you can just put it on easy after the tutorial/intro stage brother 😉

Game's pretty mild difficulty wise now after the adjustments compared to the beta, I mean, it's not exactly a walk in the park, but, it's still easier than Wukong/Lies of P/Lords of the Fallen/Nioh even on Normal difficulty.

Anyway, a couple of thoughts after finishing the demo again :

- Before the black myth Wukong patch that introduced a map, I never thought that I'd consider it to be actually crucial to my enjoyment of the game.
See, while Kazan features small rooms connected by hallways/tunnels, It still features lots of branching paths which can lead to the usual OCD "shit, where should I go first ?" moments.
It's actually nice being able to open a map and see where you have been/which parts you have already explored and where you actually need to go, It's a nice quality of life feature that I didn't think i would ever need it and yet, here we are...

- I just can't gel with the combat's feeling, I'll have to repeat myself here but, it feels like you're slashing through cardboard enemies : The enemy reaction animations are feeble plus there's almost no hit stun at all.

- It's more Nioh than souls, meaning, game drops armor/weapons frequently, it's not as bad or OCD-inducing as in Nioh, but, IMO, souls-likes should refrain from this, this shit should be kept only for dungeon crawlers.

- Game performance is...not good for the kind of graphics it has.
I think Addam's apple mentioned that It can drop as low as 40 FPS even on the XSX and I can confirm that it also drops frames on the PS5 Pro - how the FOOK is this possible ? This is literally a PS3/X360 era looking game at higher res., shit's inexcusable.
Hope they manage to iron out the performance issues come release day (March).

- It doesn't have ONE original bone on its proverbial body, and frankly, souls-itis is starting to get to me...
Wukong at least feels more action-y than souls-y and has amazing art-direction, Lies of P had a good and meaty combat feeling and a nice art-direction, Lords of the Fallen lives and dies by its art-direction, shit's just GRIMDARK turned to 11 but...this ? This looks and feels as generic as they come for fuck's sake.
Its only gimmick/feature is having a cell shaded art style and...that's pretty much it.

This is yet another "I'm gonna grab it when it drops to 25-30 Eurdolllars" title, it does absolutely nothing new nor does it introduce any new features or gimmicks.

Judging from the demo, this is going to be one of the most 6-6.5/10 games of the last 5 years.

Beside dumbed down in comparison loot system I don't see anything Nioh-like here. It's straight up fromsoftware copycat, with all its faults.
