Looks like I need to write to my congressman.
And your Senators, and your State Legislator.

I mean seriously wtf. Its like they dreamed up the worst kind of terrible laws and challenged each other to trump their dispicable rules.
Why the fuck is Obama agreeing to sign this and why is there less publicc outrage?

This thing must be stopped.
I can't believe something that's going to make worse the life of almost everyone in countries involved was deemed a good idea. Makes you wonder what is the point of democracy.
I'm really disappointed in Obama as I thought he was better than that. And here, of course, Abe and the Jimintou had to agree with it...
In addition to opposing lengthy copyright terms, the anime and fan-art community are also concerned about the TPP's criminal enforcement provisions. There is a particular section that says that "competent authorities may act upon their own initiative to initiate a legal action without the need for a formal complaint" by the copyright holder. The fear is that this would lead to a major crackdown on derivative works, including written or drawn fan fiction, recorded music covers of songs, or cosplayers, who may upload photos of themselves dressed as characters. These are all elements of Japan's thriving otaku culture, which has spread around the world and brought in millions of dollars for Japanese creators. Japan does not have a U.S.-style fair use system, in which there are flexibilities for uses based upon the nature, purpose, amount, and effect of the use on the market for the original copyrighted work. So Japanese fans could be criminally liable for their work if any "competent authority" can claim that a derivative work constitutes criminal copyright infringement. This would have a huge chilling effect on vibrant communities of fan fiction that exist on Japanese websites.
Having read a couple of specific parts it shocks me but only how this broad this is written leaving so ridiculous amounts of room for interpretation. It's weirder how Obama wants this mess as his final legacy as a president. It's outright shocking.
Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canadas prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau agreed to promote the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), both seeing the free-trade deal as beneficial to the region, Japans foreign ministry said in a statement.
The two leaders exchanged views on the pact during a 15-minute telephone call on Friday, Japans foreign ministry said.
Yeah, but what is sad is aside from this and agriculture, there's almost no talk about what's arguably more worrying (pharmaceutics, health insurance, environment, etc.).What's interesting specifically about the case of Japan is the large mobilization of opposition to the IP sections of the treaty.
RIP Comiket, doujinshi, cosplay, etc.
Is Trudeau's "honeymoon" over that quickly? lol

Obama is quite literally politicizing this as a trade agreement that will guarantee better jobs for Americans.
I'm quite sure if that were so, he'd want to specify what provisions allow this, no? He has yet to state a specific provision from the TPP that matches his spin about it.
Yeah seems like a nice idea but the agreement doesnt meet this utopian ideal does it?Obama is quite literally politicizing this as a trade agreement that will guarantee better jobs for Americans.

It basically says, "big corporations own you, and you can do fuck all about it"
Well, it's already the case (to a certain extent), isn't it ?
It's just extending that 'certain extent'...
I'm seeing the TPP (or TAFTA) as a logical step in the evolution of capitalism...

Here people would rather keep telling everyone below them to man up until they start shaving years off their life expectancies themselves. The existence labour movements will make this live or die, if TTIP gets forced on European workers we'll burn the shit down. I'm less optimistic about the possible reaction of the timid US labour force.
350 million people should have giant protests against this stuff normally but alas.
Show me an ad campaign designed by a computer then, because I can't find anything on Google.
Gaming related:
In addition to formally criminalizing circumvention of DRM (same as in DMCA), rights to distribute content will be codified into law as falling exclusively to the copyright owner. Don't forget that copyright now lasts lifetime + 70 years.
So uh, good luck with preservation of old games which have been abandoned by the original publisher. It will become a criminal act to hold and distribute even abandoned old games so long as they remain under copyright and the original holder of copyright can declare cease-and-desist or sue to prevent old IP they aren't even distributing themselves from being distributed by someone else.
Americans don't understand trade agreements.I mean seriously wtf. Its like they dreamed up the worst kind of terrible laws and challenged each other to trump their dispicable rules.

What I get form this thread is a bunch of people complaining about something they don't understand. Not because they think its bad because they were told its bad.
Australia is so fukt and our fucking government isn't going to do shit about it. Malcolm fucking Turnbull and his shit sandwich smile. Sure you got the medical provisions in but we're still going to get our asses sued off by big pharma cos the market exclusivity provisions are still in.
Oh...it's moved to the off-topic section.
Why? Actually, I was told it was a good deal.
Hell, the MPAA likes the deal, I like movies. Can't be that bad.
Who else supports it?
It's not capitalism, it's corporatism and it's been around for a long time.
There is some incredible amount of fearmongering in here from people who haven't read the agreement. That sure bodes well for evaluating it thoroughly.
As for opposition and support, the massive text has only been out for a day, but some of the opposition put out releases against it less than six hours after release, which kind of signifies to me that they already decided their stance without looking at the text. I don't buy the supporting statements either, especially since Congress won't even vote on it for months, which means they are being given a lot of time to figure this stuff out.
Are we actually going to be this ridiculous and not wait for some proper analysis before screaming in fear?
George Weidman (Super Bunnyhop) released a video yesterday generally focusing on how it affects games. Might be worth a thread on gaming side too.Is there any more that's gaming related? I would totally be okay with a Gaming version of this thread with more relevant stuff to games.
