The Game Business (Chris Dring): Game studios “desperate” for Switch 2 dev kits

Video game developers are "desperate" to get hold of Switch 2 dev kits to capitalise on the launch of Nintendo's new machine.

Nintendo has prioritised big name publishers and partners for the initial batch of Switch 2 dev units, alongside selected developers able to deliver games for the launch window, The Game Business understands.

Most of the studios we spoke to hadn't received kits yet, but were hoping to hear news now the console announcement has been made. One AA studio, who felt they could have had a game ready for the Switch 2 launch, told us they were initially frustrated by Nintendo's silence.

"New console audiences are often willing to try new things at the start, so we were desperate to get our hands on dev kits early," said the studio co-founder. "Nintendo has finally responded to us, but we still don't think we'll get anything for a few months."

I spoke to numerous indie publishers about the Switch 2 during GDC, and although every one of them were excited by the prospect of the machine, they're wary of expecting too much. A combination of backwards compatibility with the first Switch, plus increased interest from larger third-party publishers, means they're not expecting a huge bump in game sales for smaller indie titles when Switch 2 arrives.

Maybe they can get those dev kits that arent 4K...

Obviously there is a limit to how many kits they can produce, and I also think they prob want to avoid too many titles at launch like the WiiU.

They know they can push whatever shit and they will still sell during the launch window, especially given MK World being the only Nintendo 1st party launching with the console.

Same articles came out around the Switch. The store was actually pretty limited for at least a year. Indies were only a small curated list. Many of us thought that was going to be the approach the whole time. Random stuff like Graceful Explosion Machine won the lottery just by having a dev kit ready. Then a year or so later, the endless waves of crap started flooding in.

Thing is Switch 1 was so underpowered that it needed a lot of effort for "impossible" ports

Cyberpunk 2077 phantom liberty looks and plays actually great already with just 7 weeks effort and more to come before release. If that game runs, no excuses for any other devs. That's probably why everyone is rushing to get one. Easy port, easy cash.

Don't under-estimate what CDPR actually achieved with Cyberpunk. Their engineers are some of the best around. Period. I fully expect lazy ports for days for Switch 2. Dynamic res, all settings on low, fucked frame times; USD$89.99 please.

Burning dumpster launches of CP2077 and Witcher 3 Next Gen Patch would like to have as word with you...
You mean the game that management forced out the door early, and later apologised for forcing their staff to do so, and the patch handled by their B team?

Witcher 3 still suffers from poor RT implementation

CP2077 still broken in RT on cards with less than 12g of vram. (heavy perf degradation and ingame map lag)

Look, I adore CDPR and love the aesthetics of RED Engine, but god is my witness they are your typical slav-jank team tech-wise.
