I think we are about to witness the new pinnacle of Asian gaming. Something that will even surpass the peak of the 1990s-2000s era

In the next of couple of years, here's the line-up coming out of Japan, China and South Korea

JAPAN
- Nintendo: Switch-2 --> Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, Pokemon
- Konami: revival of Metal Gear franchise

- Capcom: Monster Hunter Wilds, Onimusha, Resident Evil 9, Dragon's Dogma 2 DLC should be announced soon

- Sega: Sonic, Pirate Yakuza

- Koei Tecmo: Ninja Gaiden 4, Rise of the Ronin (DLC should be announced soon)

You know they exist, they just haven't been announced yet.

With Switch-2 coming, they are inevitable
No, I don't know that, it just makes up for a poor list if you have to add promises, like the Silent Hill revival (especially with the core game of this initiative being developed in the West).
But if you insist, I think you forgot Astro Bot next, Gran Turismo next and Physint. =)

You're right, Silent Hill Remake was made by Western studio, I removed it from the list

Yeah I think we’re entering a new golden age too. And what’s more incredible is that for some of these Asian studios this is only their first generation of higher tier console/PC games and they’re already at a good to great quality. Like Black Myth Wukong, Lies of P, Stellar Blade and Tides of Annihilation are just the first generation of these studios’ higher production single player PC/console games.

Their second and third generation of releases are undoubtedly going to take big leaps forward now that they have gained experience with their first generation games. And these studios are manned by very hard working people who do things efficiently so it wouldn’t surprise me if they release games more regularly than other studios but at lower the production cost.

That's the kind of shake-up we need in this industry. A focus on games and no DEI/politics bullshit.

OP, you can also add Delta Force (not available on consoles yet). It's developed by a Chinese studio.
There's also Dokev by Korean developer Pearl abyss.
There's Inzoi which aims to dethrone the sims. It's developed by South-Korean studio Krafton.
There's also that Chinese (or Korean?) game which plays like Detroit become human. Can't remember the title.
Death strading 2 for Japan too.

The PS3/360 generation saw the rise of American games and the decline of Japanese games.

The American studios like Bethesda, BioWare and Irrational were heavily invested and familiar with PC development in the early 00s, so when the HD consoles arrived they just smoothly transitioned and found a huge new audience.

The Japanese studios were heavily invested in arcades, whenever a new console gen started they could port those games to console, hence why the most impressive early games of every console gen were Japanese. By the mid 00s the arcades were gone and there was an increased focus on handheld, so when the HD consoles came they were ill prepared.

Since Unreal Engine 4 and 5 came about the playing field has been levelled and, in terms of quality.

Japan does indeed seem to be far ahead again.

No. Because if you are honest 90% of these games are the same game in different variations. Experience wise I would say this wont work out very well. :messenger_winking_tongue:

I hate shitty soulslike games and clones but LOVE Wukong.

The fact a Chinese made game can basically force me to tolerate and even like a genre by being so good is amazing to me.

Yeah, Wukong was great and even if I am not into these fighting games...it should have been the true GOTY of 2024. But if you get flooded with Wukong clones now...I dont know if this ends up very well. 🤷‍♂️

Not exactly a varied output lol.

Feels like I have already played all of these Chinese/Korean games hundreds of times.

Marvel Rivals for me is one of the most telling examples because Marvel clearly made the right decision in outsourcing the game to a Chinese company, because any western dev would almost certainly have wokified the product and you wouldn't have seen the same level of interest and excitement. In other words, it's starting to make more sense for companies to partner with Asian developers than western ones, and that's kind of a big deal.

Does China and Korea count if they just keep making Soulsborne May Cry

If they’re good games then yes

However I think they’ve still got some way to catch up to Japan.

Regardless, they’re putting American and Canadian AAA studios to shame.

The vast majority of games I’ve enjoyed over the past few years were made in Asia. The Western Dominance that began in the 7th Gen is in its death throes. They’re almost consistently being outperformed from a commercial and critical standpoint.

Watching Greg Miller’s speech at The Dice Awards cemented home for me that the West still isn’t reading the room.
