Hey is anyone else having trouble connecting to multiplayer in the PS3 version?

It seems to be down right now for PS3 users.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/04/29/gta-iv-online-is-down/

If you are a proud owner of Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3, then you might not be so proud to know that the online multi-player mode is down. Or, at least it appears to be so for PS3 patrons. Numerous players have received errors upon attempting to connect; this blogger included has not been able to get the multi-player to work. An error message pops up: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again." Hopefully, Rockstar can get things running soon. Wouldn't want to upset the GTA IV crowd, if you know what we mean. In the meantime, get back to the single player game. We'll keep you posted as we find out more.

The Sentinel is still the best car I see, is there still a derivative of the Mafia Sentinal?
That's the best car in GTA history.

GUYS, I don't know what to do next. The story isn't advancing! What do i DOOO?!

I had my first date with Michelle, I've played darts, pool, and even went to a strip club with Roman. Now what?! Nothing is happening!

If you have no mission giver markers then phone people yourself. Also make sure you don't have Sleep Mode on in your phone options, that stops the story.

Just wait, and go to every mission icon you see. If you don't see any try going to the cab depot or calling Roman.

Those who are saying the missions are too easy, they are, for now. Wait until you play out a rather famous movie scene.

It's Fucking awesome.

Do I have a problem with my set, or is the image quality god-fucking awful for everyone? There's so much shimmer and it looks horribly, horribly bad. I never noticed this problem in videos and never saw it mentioned. Anyone?
I had that as well when I first booted it up. People around here said to lower sharpness on your TV to as low as it can go, and turn off any extra image processing that your TV does.

Picked it up last night at Gamestop about 120 in line. Got it home played for about 2hrs. Game is great, I love all the things you can do, the walking up to the rack and trying on clothes is a really cool touch.

Oddly enough I played Saints Row that night to get prepped for this title, I like Saints Row better:lol I know I am in the minority. I think it's the simplicity, the controls and the graphical clarity and color of SR.
Honestly, I'm sort of feeling the same way, that is until I played the multiplayer. That was incredible, so far, however, I like San Andreas more but I honestly haven't doen much.

Okay, PS3 version of the game is totally down for all my friends. I guess Rockstar's messed something up.
Did they all get it from roughly the same store and/or geographic area?

EDIT: Did you mean the game is crashing or just PSN is down?

Ok guys I need help i guess... I'm absolutely new to the series. This is my first game I've played and taken serious. I've done the first mission by driving roman wherever. Anyway the driving feels so broken its terrible.

So apparently if you cause a fender bender and drive off, and there's a cop standing right there he doesn't do anything? I ran 3 red lights beside a cop and they didn't even do anything... I drove on the sidewalk beside a cop and he didn't do anything either.

So is this game not sim at all? I think if you wanted you should be able to drive on the road making appropriate turns and not hit people all the time to stay under cover. I can't seem to do any of those and apparently it doesn't matter.

Also the phone. I got a message on there saying i can customize my phone at any time. Does this include color changes? Because i can't read this damn thing no matter what i set the contrast to. The damn thing is black on almost black. How do I change it?

So GAF, I've been a huge skeptic of the GTA series for awhile. I finally tried out San Andreas to see what the hype was about, and I was dissapointed.

The problem was that although I liked the story, I felt that the missions were almost all uniformly awful. Too difficult, not fun, and it was ridiculous that whenever you lose a mission, you don't have an option to retry right away. You would have to high tail it all the way back to where the mission starts. Or, alternatively, reset the system to speed up that process. The mission where you had to hijack some weapons from a National Guard depot (using a forklift) was the breaking point for me.

So about GTAIV. Does it fix those kinds of problems? Would it convert somebody who thinks that the GTA series is perhaps one of the most overrated game series of all time?

Sears didn't have the game today :( Wanted to get it there since I have a gift card. Oh well, going to BB later to grab a copy then.

I'd like to recommend taking a break from missions and watching some TV at the safe house. More amusing than the radio so far. Republican Space Commandos is as awesome as it sounds.

I think he means the online isn't working, I just checked mine and I couldn't get online in game. PSN is fine, just no online play in GTA4. Not a big deal for me as I'm just playing SP today, but I hope they get it straightened out soon. Shades of COD4, I'm sure we'll see a PR release talking about how the matchmaking servers were down a few days "due to unprecedented demand!".

So basically you're saying you'd rather go to small claims court for fender benders in Liberty City than get away with minor accidents unscathed?

Am I the only one who doesn't find the graphics to be...good? The best word I can use to describe them is 'janky.' Sometimes the lighting is perfect and the game looks photorealistic. But other times (the majority of the time) there is lots of pop-up and monster jaggies. Basically every time I turn the right control stick. Plus the framerate is less than stellar.

But my big problems are pop-up and jaggies. I'm playing on a 37'' LCD with HDMI cables. Any help or am I just being too picky? What are other people's reactions?

PS3 version here. OK. Great game.
But IMHO all these 10/10 are pure madness. The graphics are nothing special, so blurred...and more important, the gameplay is essentially more of the same.
overall so far, 8.5/10
There's a filter in the options where you can make it more 360-like (not as soft).

For those of you wondering about customizing the phone: The one Roman gives you can't use themes. You'll get a better cellphone later on.

More specifically, during the second mission from Playboy X, in Algonquin. It also has a camera.

Is there really? I think I'm going to turn it off since the overly soft look is killing my eyes (I already need glasses, the softness makes it worse :p)

I hate to ask, but if anyone has an extra free month gold trial card floating around I could really use one. For some reason mine was missing the card. Thanks!

Is your TV at least somewhat calibrated? I don't have my TV professionally calibrated, but turning sharpness down to only 2 or 3 slides up from zero (out of 10) in sharpness eliminated excess jaggies that wouldn't normally be in the picture unless sharpness settings were raised too high.

This game is SOOOOOO far from 30fps rockstable. The framerate, even beein much BETTER than previous gta, is quite bad

I think this is a necessary conceit of the game's development. R* has to create a tension between the ability to free-roam around the city in a fun manner, while also retaining the realism necessary to fear the cops. If they ratcheted up the cop's awareness much more than where it's at, it might make the gameplay too tedious, because you would always be triggering a wanted level. I would like to see an option, however, that increases cop's awareness. That would be an interesting difficulty curve, forcing you to obey ALL laws, or risk triggering a wanted level.

Sadly, I don't use the radio in the cars anymore. There's really something off when you choose to turn off the radio within the first day of the game.

TV is pure win though.

Has anyone tried their pre-order gamerpics code yet?

I entered it and it downloaded some gamerpics.....yet I can't see them on my console. The only pics I have for the game is the gamerpic pack 1 which was a free download, I hope the pre-order bonus wasn't the same one.

Yeah I know it's not important but I'm just curious.

Cops N Crooks is great but some of the spawn points are just fucking brutal. Many times you leave your spawn area only to be greeted by the loud sound of approaching sirens and an empty street completely void of cars for you and the gang to start a getaway in. Car Jack City or whatever it's called is probably the weakest mode online imho.

Online play is pretty average though. Why wouldn't they make it possible to see who is talking on the mic? And why does the game not break up people to even teams? If you have a party of 5-6+ people, good luck not getting put into a game of 12 on 4 or 11 on 5.

Is there an 80's station? It'd be awesome if they included some songs from Vice City in it.

:lol That's exactly where I quit playing San Andreas also. I always quit playing GTA games about 20% complete because the missions became too frustrating. It's too early to tell in 4 so far, I am only a few hours in, but at least initially the missions seem better. If nothing else, the visuals and presentation has been kicked up, and I am much more interested to see the story unfold like I never was in Vice City or San Andreas.

From the local oshkosh gamestop store, 360 version is selling 10 to 1 the PS3 version. Oshkosh is a college town here in middle of wisconsin. they had 3 boxes full of 360 version and 3 boxes full of ps3 versions, they have just half of 1 box remaining for 360 and they just started thier 2nd box for the ps3 version.
I don't believe math works like you think it does. What you've just described is outselling 2.5 to 1 (which is about what I'd expect), not 10 to 1.
