The Official Grand Theft Auto IV thread: The World Is Yours

So much hate lol this is NeoGAF.

My first impressions were 'WOW' I could not believe how alive the world felt. It was simply astonishing. I've spend about a good hour and a half playing now, and I haven't done one mission, I've basically gone on a walking tour of the city as it's open from the first cutscene.

Simply amazing.

Yeah, the backlash on this game months from now will be big. Some time in, and it is not the 10 I was sold on. The driving and the combat are not great, but as others have stated you have to REALLY give props to R* for the amount of content and detail in the game.

We will see by the end, how this game pans out.

Oh god, I have :lol He's even worse. Though his first mission was, I felt, the first great mission I've come across. Really fun stuff.

Where can I find this template you guys all seem to be using to bash the game? The posts are all so identical

This is exactly what I have been doing. I just love walking and driving around. Zero missions completed yet :p

Maybe so...

I live in NYC and the whole thug/ghetto culture thing is just not doing it for me either.

I think they cleaned Liberty city up quite a bit from the original game (I'm calling GTA3 the original). It was looking like Huntington or Detroit or something.

I do think the cars in this game handle like total shit, though. Shooting is good. Fighting has taken a step back. But, I like how much more grown up this game has become from the last generation.

I found it ironic that the very same day GTA4 comes out my house gets broken into and my xbox, ps3, and most of my newer games including gta4 get stolen and now i cant play it haha:lol Life sucks most of the times

Played a little bit so far (360)

This game is not a 10, no way on god's green earth.

I give them props for the amount of stuff going on, but the driving is whack, as is movement in general and combat.

I also cant get into a multi player game, keeps saying disconnected and bringing me back.

:lol Seriously. The gun combat is just fine now, and with a decent cover system (even better than MGO's...which is crazy since thats a stealth game).

Everything else is great, but the fighting system still feels like the same button mashy system except with 3 seperate attacks and block.

The framerate hasnt dropped for me yet, 30fps all the time, havent had any real crazy explosions so I cant say. The game is NOT blurry at all, so I dont know where people get off saying that.

Its about as dark as how Splinter Cell Double Agent was on the 360. In light areas its really light, in dark areas...well you know.

Stood outside for a whole day cycle...havent seen anything that looks like color fading at noon.

Stick sensitivity is just fine for me (PS3 version) Niko moves when I want him to move. If this happens on 360, it might just be your analog stick. Sometimes 360 sticks dont center all the way after long term use. That makes characters move slightly even if you arent touching it.

Movement works fine too. Driving takes a bit of getting used to, but as for the other complaints, I have no idea where you guys are getting them.

EDIT: How has fighting taken a step back? Its better than any GTA game before. Its not perfect, but definatly not a step back.

Done a few missions and mostly free rided around town. But so far, thumbs up.

But mannnnn. Some cars suck. Bad.
Can some post pics or the types of cars that actually handle better? I would like to be on the lookout for whatever you guys have found.

The game replaced one of the cars that I had saved at my parking spot with a car of a different model and colour. Has this happened to anyone else?

No, but I played an MP match and when I came back to my SP game I was wearing different clothes, and had guns I didn't pick up in SP.

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
Just played deathmatch for a hour. We had about 8 people but it ended up being me and another guy. I lost by a few hundred dollars. :(

This game is amazing.

I'm amazed so many people are having so many issues with the cars. One of the first things I liked about the game was that I had to mind my speed a bit.

Even the regular cars can handle fine, you just can't have the accelerator going at full force all the time and braking late. Try driving as you would in a game like gran turismo or whatever at first, and go from there.

You guys just need to learn to slow down sometimes.'

I was just about to say that, but was afraid someone would throw a brick at me for saying that.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
I really want to try the MP, but I want to experience the whole city piece by piece instead of all at once. :(

My 1/50th of a dollar:

Game looks terrible but plays well. The city is huge and very alive, but so far (about 3 hours in) the story and writing aren't impressing me. Rockstar apparently thinks swear words=funny no matter what. The story so far is exactly the same as every other GTA game. Start out as lowly thug, take over gang, blah blah blah. Oscar worthy my foot. I've really liked the driving. Every car feels different and has weight. I haven't had any framerate issues yet (360 version).

Question: Can you dial numbers from your phone other than ones in your phonebook? And how does one go about doing that?

I played for eight hours straight last night. It's been years and years since I put a full eight hours into a videogame in a single day. And now I've slept the sleep of the just and am going to dive back into it.

I've done a handful of missions, a handful of dates, but mostly it's just been wandering around to see what there is to see.

I accidentally crossed the line toward Algonquin while attempting to swim away from the cops. Suddenly the air was filled with helicopters. Sweet, gun-shooting helicopters.

This game is more sluggish than Harry Knowles trying to get out of bed in the morning. Maybe it's the fact that I was playing Crackdown a ridiculous amount only a couple of weeks ago, but the contrast is so great. Yes, I know this game is supposed to be realistic, but everything feels so slow. The controls are frustrating at times and the graphics are once again comparatively underwhelming.

The MP was pretty fun when I played with a friend in a game with a large amount of people. But most of time, we struggled to figure out what exactly to do. How do you create a regular game? With custom game? Anyway, I think that's really the big thing here. Otherwise, it feels like the same game as ever. Just bumped up into what would be expected from the series on a next-gen console. I do have to admit that the world is impressive. Only minutes into playing the game, I saw some random pedestrian get run over and the people standing around react accordingly, which was pretty cool.

I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of this game, but the backlash has already started. 10s across the board do that.

Everyone has their own opinion (even though this is gaf....:lol ) , but I have to disagree and say this game is a 10 for me. I like the driving...I don't know what some of you are doing wrong, but every car handles differently. The mustang/muscle cars spin out a LOT more than the more expensive luxury cars for sure. Ah well back to playing!

Mission (an early one) question:
I'm at the china shop and I need to throw something through the glass. I walked over to trash cans, newspaper stands, and a public phone and pressed LB, I can't seem to pick them up. What am I doing wrong?

Slowing down isn't the problem, speeding up is. Couple of the cars go from 0-60 in...never. Sucks for chase missions.

I'm a bit farther than you I'd imagin (6hrs) and can only say: wut? lowly thug? take over gang? terrible graphics? I think your problem is that you somehow bought saint's row insead of gta4. As for the swearing, it's fitting considering the characters.

Numbers i'm not sure, outside 911. I tried to input other numbers I saw on a few ads and they didn't work :/

Any way to turn SPEECH up (when people phone you)

So many times now someone called me whilst my radio is blasting, cars honking, and sirens.. wooing.. that I don't catch what the caller is saying (resorted to putting subtitles on)

After Crackdown, walking or running from place to place in GTA is slightly painful.
