Does anyone here have any tips on procuring a PSP for a decent price?

I want to get one basically solely to play valkyrie profile. Then the three MGS games, crisis core, BoF3, and MM Powered up that aren't on PSN are just a bonus. (I have a vita already).

If you want a new one, you could try and get one of those PSP E1000s. They should be around €80-€90 and can still easily be found in stores (provided you are in Europe).

Otherwise you could check eBay and try to buy a lot that includes a PSP, then sell the games that came with it to reduce to overall price you paid for the system.

e.g. get something like this for €55: http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/Psp-5-jeux-/111325767049?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_23&hash=item19eb886589
Then sell all the games for €5 each or so, and the PSP will have cost you around €30.

What I've noticed is that it's hard to get PSP games from legal sources in my country. Wanted to buy Metal Gear Acid 2 recently, because I liked the first game. Nope, no store is selling them and I don't want a used copy from an unknown source.

This is a 'legal' source, I guess.

Their shipping:
Europe: Shipping is £3.99 per item.
USA & Rest of the World: Shipping is £4.99 per item.

How is the screen on the Go? I think I've read it's the best PSP screen?

it's basically the same as the 3000 but smaller, so better pixel density.

those who say the 1000/2000 had a better screen than the 3000 are seriously on crack, despite the scanline non-controversy. the colour reproduction and lack of ghosting on the 3000 puts it streets ahead.

i owned every PSP model at one point, but what i have now is a black go for my EU account and a "spirited green" 3000 for japanese stuff. i don't think that one ever went on sale anywhere else but i love the colour, it's like a slightly lighter british racing green:

The PSP was the first console that I bought on launch day.Great device with a lot of interesting games, the emulators were cool as well.

I often used it for listening to podcasts and surfing on free WLAN spots.

Two new games for the collection! Saw both of these super cheap today ($5 for GitS, $3 for Sonic). I know they're both supposed to be pretty eehhh, but I've wanted to check 'em out for a while now. The UMD for Sonic is in filthy condition though, there's gunk on the actual disc. =\

Not having the scanlines would definitely make the Go's screen better, even if the image quality is otherwise pretty much the same.

Ordered me a Go, thinking about accessorizing it. How are the component cables? Does it fill the screen unlike the 2000/3000 ones? And do you need the stand for it, or can you plug the cable straight into the system?

Don't think I posted this before, but my collection that is mostly out of order at the moment. So the OCD alphabetical people can go nuts over it.

Digital games not pictured:

Brave Story
Corpse Party
Gurumin

Wish I had gone with physical copies of Gurumin and Brave Story at this point, oh well.

Haha, damn. I looked a good while at that picture and thought "hey, that looks like Vesperia on the side, what Tales game is that?" until I noticed it's a 360 game.

I've actually been thinking about picking up a Go and putting my ripped games on it. Seems like the best option, cheaper than buying another Vita and it should be better than a replacement PSP 2000/3000.

The best by far, imho... it may be about an inch smaller diagonally, but it's a noticeable improvement over the other models.

That color was released in NA bundled with MGS Peace Walker - I've got one, and they're quite common over here...

The aspect and screen ratios for the video out on the PSP Go is exactly the same as the on the PSP2000/3000... No full screen mode for games without CFW... As to needing the docking station, let's put it this way; you can plug the video out cable directly into the PSP Go, but you can only play as long as the batter lasts, because the port for the AC adapter is the same as the video out port. If you have the docking station, it has an additional barrel-type input like you find on the UMD-equipped PSP models, so you can use an AC adapter for a PSP 1K, 2K or 3K to power the docking station and the PSP Go while running your video out on the PSP Go-style port on the docking station.

Pretty sure the PSP Go's screen is different (better); it doesn't have the scanline issue.

possible, but the scanline issue is such a non-issue it's hard to tell. in terms of important stuff like response, contrast, colour, reflectiveness etc, it's the same as the 3000.

That's definitely a matter of opinion. I couldn't not notice the scan line issue, to the point that I bought a PSP-2000 instead of a 3000. If you're somebody who is picky about things like that, it can ruin that model for you.

The Go is definitely the best screen of any model. I think I'm going to finally pick one up next time I'm in Japan.

that's the weird thing, i am incredibly picky about screen details — air gaps, pentile, ghosting and so on — so i thought i'd be exactly the kind of person for whom the scanlines would be an issue. but i just don't see it!

the 3000's screen has so many objective, huge advantages over the 2000's that it's really hard for me to get how anyone would prefer the latter, but if it truly was a dealbreaker for you i guess i can't argue.

on another note, is japan really a good place to pick up a go? it pretty much disappeared without trace here, i'd have thought it might be easier to find elsewhere. i bought mine on a visit to the UK.

Japan's a good place to find ANY old hardware, typically. When I was last there (September 2013), I got a DSi LL and a DS Lite. Game stores aren't like there are in the States, where unless it's the latest and greatest they usually don't care. Even what you'd consider to be their GameStop-level shops will often have older hardware.

Best part of buying used systems in Japan? Quality. When I got the LL, the box said "scratches on screen". I asked the guy at the register about it, and he opened the box so I could look at the unit. The thing might as well have been brand new, but because ANY scratches on the touch screen - even the faintest of ones - count as scratches, I got a discount, even beyond the lower price due to it being used.

I picked up my PSP-2000 in Japan in early 2012, and while I wasn't specifically hunting them down, I know on that last trip even the earliest of PSP model was pretty easy to find. Tracking down a PSP Go shouldn't be an issue at all.

I agree, they almost always seem to exaggerate the amount of damage a 2nd hand piece of hard- or software has suffered. I guess the Japanese consumer is super picky compared to the Western one.

The Go definitely had a different colour temperature to the 2000. I remember playing MGS:pW with a friend and we put screens side by side, the Go just looked super different. I am gonna try to find the photos I took to compare.

I'm currently playing on a PSP-1000 when I play, I still have a 2000 but it's disc drive doesn't work anymore because I dropped it on the floor once. :/

That's certainly true and I love them that much more for it. :)

Whenever I pick up a game from my favourite seller it says: condition: decent with A ratings across the board. Yet his ratings go up to S. Never seen him describe an item with an S so far. Yet when the games arrive, they always seem brand new, and even come in their original sleeve like you brought them directly from a store back when they were released.

Well you can always mod the 2000 and rip your games to memory stick so that you can actually use the system again. It would be a waste to have to throw it away just because it has a defective drive.

Sony portables and memory cards are like toothpaste and orange juice. Why does the Go have to use those M2 sticks. Prices are almost as ridiculous as Vita memory cards.

I can't deal with the ghosting of a 2000 and I don't like the Go, plus I want a UMD drive handy even though I end up installing most of the games I play.

The 3000 is the way to go, IMO. Looks great.

Can you put a 16GB card in it and use both at the same time? Or is it either/or like the Vita-2000?

I'm under the impression you can, but 16GB cards are $36 on Amazon and way more everywhere else I've looked.

For now I'm holding off buying anything, the 16GB built in should be fine to start with. I could probably fit all my games on that plus 8GB, but another 16GB would give me some room to grow.

Probably the first device I absolutely fawned over.

I used that to play psp games, Ps1 games, watch videos, watch porn, read comic books, emulate snes, browse the Internet, and even use that chat website to send text messages lol.

The psp is my homie, you were so good to me bro *wipes tear*

Plus Patapon 2.

I gave the phat to my brother, it was a beautiful male bonding experience.

great thread! retro-GAF loves the shoutouts, heh.

for real, this system is such an example of how widely identity can change across a gen - like the vita, many core gamers loved it for its specs/design but not much was going on, then Chinatown Wars & other stuff may've had some thinking it was actually gonna be like a portable Playstation, then it ended up having this tremendous RPG/SRPG/niche library in the end. i love it & still have much left to play from its offerings.

Oh absolutely!
Like I already might have mentioned, I imported a Japanese one since the EU date was unclear for quite a while. Loved it for the first 6 months or so, but after that, quickly lost interest.
The games I was looking for simply didn't seem to be there.
I don't even remember when Chinatown Wars came out for it as by that time I had moved on and had way too many DS and Wii games keeping me busy so that I didn't feel the need to keep up with yet another system.

Now, many years later it surprises me just how many classics I'm able to pick up for this little system and I feel bad for not giving it a second chance back in the day.
In the 2 months that I've been buying PSP games again, my library has quickly grown to 80 games and I can see myself easily buying 100 more at this point. Perhaps more. :)

My PSP collection in some panoramic pics from my iPhone:

The three pictures include most of my hardware and the 350 UMDs in my collection... Systems pictured in the first pic include a couple of PSP1001s (one MiB), two special edition PSP2000s (Star Wars and GoW editions), the MGS Big Boss PSP3000, the "spirit green" MGS Peace Walker PSP3000, a silver PSP3000 and two PSP Go systems...

The rest is just games, though there are four duplicates in the third picture that are also in the second pic (just to even out the rows)...

Not pictured are a number of PSP1001s (all my kids had one, so there's three more lying around the house), assorted cases and grips, charging stations, cameras and whatnot...

Welp...

Seeing as how the PSP games that were finally compatible with vita got re-broken, I finally just pulled the trigger on a psp-3000, which I won for $55 shipped on ebay. Looks to be in great shape as well.

Then I went on Amazon and bought Metal Gear Ac!d, Brave Story, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, and Mega Man powered up, and a 4gb memory card.

I prefer to play everything on my Vita when possible, but damn! UMDs are cheap!

Anything else that never got a PSN release, or is impossible to move to vita that I should look out for? I guess I should mention I managed to get portable ops onto my vita in time.

I am on the look out for Hammerin Hero myself so I can recommend that game. I believe it was one of those games that was available on psn briefly, but has since been removed. Its a wacky sidescroller.

Seems like you're into rpgs and the psp has a ton of them. I'd grab some of those as well before they get crazy. I'd recommend FF Tactics War Of The Lions and I also had fun with the Lunar remake.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
So, I shelled out for a bigger memory card (the one I had up until now was the 1GB card I bought back in 2005) and I finally have some space to store PSN games on. What are the PSN-exclusive must haves? I've already got the Corpse Party games, and I bought DJ Max Portable 3 on there (which is better than the retail version), so what else is out there?

Only interested in stuff that I can't buy on a UMD.

Bought a few more for the collection while at EB today... They're blowing out most of their used PSP stock at $4.50 a piece. I was happy to find Sweet Fuse there, as that game looked kind of interesting on release, and it was such a limited run it'll probably get difficult to find pretty quickly... Grabbed a UMD-only copy of Jewel Summoner as well; I've been looking for that at a reasonable price for a while, and it's getting pretty tough to find. I was surprised that quite a few of these games were actually new, with "refurbished" stickers over the new price tag. I also grabbed Conception II and received my Demon Gaze Ltd Ed from NISA for the Vita... sry for the crappy phone pic:

XhvPcbl.jpg

So, how is the PSVita homebrew status?

Basically, last time I checked, they could crack into the PSP sandbox and that's it... and, of course, you need to have one of the cracked games on an old firmware to manage even that... Basically, you turn your Vita into a gimped CFW PSP, which is not something I can be bothered doing just to play PSX and PSP games as well as some mediocre emulators on "dat OLED", especially when I have three CFW PSPs within arm's reach of my Vita...

Yeah, I just put CFW on my Go today so I can put my UMDs on it now that I have a USB cable for it. So now I can take eCFW off my Vita. That was previously my only way to play PSP games due to my 2000 being kind of messed up, fortunately it still serves me well as a UMD ripper.

I like how small the Go is. It almost makes me want to... use it as a portable! *gasp*

On a whim, decided to play through Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X for the first time since it came out.

What a difference the PSP-3000 makes. The game no longer looked like shit, wasn't a blurry mess, and was actually possible to control. Crazy! I originally played the game on the PSP-1000, and while I enjoyed it, everything about that POS system dampened the fun. This time around, I was surprised by how sharp the game looked, and how smoothly it ran (60fps? I didn't know the PSP could even do that.) The controls were also surprisingly precise, which I never realized due to the atrocious PSP-1000 d-pad that I'm so accustomed to.

So yeah, it was interesting revisiting a game I played on the PSP-1000 on the 3000. I feel like I'm gradually starting to warm up to the platform a bit more, now that I see how well an action game can perform on the thing. What a piece of crap that original system was.

Oh, and the game is still great.
