There are now two separate versions of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy on PlayStation 4

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was originally released as a "PS2 Classic" for PS4 back in 2017. Not long after this game was released, Sony ceased their program to convert PS2 games to the PS4.

Earlier this year, Sony surprised us by ushering in a new wave of PS2 games for both PS4 and PS5. These new 2024 releases utilized a new and improved version of the PS2 emulator (developed by a company called Implicit Conversions), with additional features such as added video filtering effects, the ability to save anywhere in the game, multiple save states, and the ability to "rewind" the gameplay.

Recently, Sony announced through a post on PlayStation.Blog that Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy would be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium Classcis Catalog. When they did this, I wondered if they would update the game to utilize the new and improved emulator for PS4 and PS5.

Sure enough, they did in fact introduce a new version of this game for PS5...and also for PS4. Interestingly, on PS4, this does not appear to be merely an "update" of the 2017 release, but rather a completely new and distinct product. The entry on PS Store is updated with today's date, and the description mentions the added features found in the newer PS2 emulator. The 2024 release is free for you to claim if you already own the 2017 version. However, after claiming it on PS Store, I went to my PS4's game library, and I only observed a single entry for Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. It seems like the 2024 version (once claimed) fully replaces the 2017 version. I don't know if you will be able to re-download the 2017 version, if it is not already on your hard drive.

While I haven't tried the 2024 version yet, I already found that it has a separate trophy list, with some differences in the trophies themselves. With that in mind, my guess (and this is purely a guess) is that the old game save data from the 2017 version might not carry over to the 2024 version. I probably won't be able to test this tonight, so maybe someone else here can do the honors. On the bright side, this gives devoted players an opportunity to earn a fresh set of trophies (or two fresh sets, if you happen to own a PS5).

Here are the trophy lists:

2017 release on PS4: https://www.playstationtrophies.org/game/jak-and-daxter-ps4/trophies/

2024 release on PS4: https://www.playstationtrophies.org/game/jak-and-daxter-the-precursor-legacy/trophies/

2024 release on PS5: https://www.playstationtrophies.org/game/jak-and-daxter-the-precursor-legacy-v2/trophies/

I've read that a few "PS2 Classics for PS4" (e.g. Primal, Ape Escape 2) are problematic when played on PS5. If this new release of Jak and Daxter is any indication, perhaps Sony might continue to comb throiugh their other previous "PS2 Classics", and produce new versions with improved features and native PS5 compatibiity.

Same with Siren 1 in the West (insane that Japan/Asia never got it until this year's re-release).
I hope Saru Getchu 2/Ape Escape 2 gets announced soon (which would also be new for JP).
