It has gotten better thanks to Epicshima but it takes a while to build steam. Once you hit the serial killers it picks up.

Soul Eater gets a lot of passes as an anime for me than most others do, probably because I'm a big fan of the source material and BONES fucking destroyed with how well a direction in art and combat sequencing they did with a lot of the animation. At the same time, I can definitely see how it can grate on someone who doesn't like the shonen genre.
