There was an "overwhelming" agreement that the earth was flat because you were ostracised by the church and state if you said otherwise. Fucking idiots.

I don't even think that's true? The medieval view of the universe included a round Earth, since they were taking that model from the Greeks.

There's a whole deliberate mythology created around Christopher Columbus (I forget the name of the book that created it, but it's American) that he's the first American hero because he proved the world was round. He didn't, he was just trying to find a shorter route to India.

Pressed on the scientific consensus, Scaramucci challenged whether anything in science can be known. “There was an overwhelming science that the Earth was flat, and there was an overwhelming science that we were the center of the world, 100%, you know, we get a lot of things wrong in the scientific community—you and I both know that,” he said.
Seems like he forgot how the Church upheld these ideas and banished/executed those that challenged it *eye emoji*

This one's actually false. People have known the Earth's round since Greco-Roman times. Now, that the Earth revolves around the Sun...

It's just amazing how he uses the knowledge we gained from science to tell us how science got things wrong, so that's why we shouldn't trust science.

Its amazing how the scientific process is still misunderstood

China was on that for like a millennia before.

Ya, but some dudes telling stories around their hearth 4000 years ago imagined the earth as a flat circle, surrounded by water. Scientific consensus!

EDIT: Also, the shape of the earth was actually one of the things China was behind on. They generally thought that the earth was flat and square, but that the heavens were spherical. Some people argue for a few Chinese passages suggesting a spherical earth, but there is what more against that idea.

Dennis had an Ivy League education and couldn't shut Mac's argument down. He deserved to lose the Cereal Defense.

Science is telling him that being a mouthpiece for oil and coal lobbyists net him millions of dollars.

Sorry humanity, the top of food chains get sheltered from impending doom. And, boy, that's one huge ass group of homogeneous folks in every aspect you'll find in them.

There really wasn't any scientific evidence that the earth was flat or that the earth was the center of the universe, people just assumed it so. Science has never been wrong, people have

Song dynasty did correct that idea eventually. Still precedes Europeans by hundreds.

He clarifies human history. And hes only 2,000 years off.

Assuming we start human history from our POV with writing (instead of oral history that was communicating ideas before then).

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the 5500 year thing is the old, "count back to Adam" figure. 5500 BC being the "start" of earth, is a popular calculation in young earth creationism.

Yea, science has gotten a lot wrong when there was no proper scientific method

When there was no easy way to share information and communicate

When there wasn't a massive talent pool of scientists

When we didn't have precise sensors and measurement instruments

When we didn't have adequate data analytics

This guy (and from the looks of it, this administration) needs to shut the fuck up. This is a scientific consensus, and that means a hell of a lot more in 2017 than hundreds and thousands of years ago when we didn't have any of the listed things.

It was back to being popular belief among Chinese scholars by the 17th century when heavier European trade (and trade of ideas) started to take place. That said, scholars were pretty receptive of the idea, and the traditional flat earth view died out among the educated that century.

Science never said the world was flat.

Modern science is a product of post enlightenment.

Even early greeks calculated circumference of earth.

When science gets stuff "wrong" it's only corrected by more science. Not some idiot speculating.

If you have no expertise or understanding, you have to rely on expert consensus.

I'd assume it was a rejection of European values (the opposite happened in Japan), before the purge. Then the cultural revolution erased everything again.

_(ツ)_/¯ I mean, why bother amirite?

Intellectual bankruptcy.

I mean people have been posting that "What if we help the planet for no reason" comic for a while but this is basically that sentiment word for word. It's astounding how dazzlingly stupid some people are.

My exact thought reading this thread's title.....

Mac is in the White House run by Dennis.

We are so doomed if a man willing to pander to creationism and lend it merit is president of the country.

So fucking doomed.

Education is going to get gutted and destroyed even more.

My brain is melting. The oversimplification of facts and history is going to be our downfall. People will killed for thinking the earth was not the center of the universe.

Thankfully, Carl Sagan is dead and doesn't have to bear witness to this fucking travesty of a modern civilized world averse to the most basic concept of science.

Whilst people here cringe and find this indicative of Donald Trump's intellect, I'm reminded by the glaring fact that Americans have elected this man as their next president. Almost 60 million of them thought him to be qualified and intellectually competent enough. We knew his views. We knew what he intended to do, certainly in terms of his cabinet picks.

America elected him, and thus this adviser. People need to start owning this. Thread title should be renamed to 'Advisor to US President....'
