Yup, it's pretty clear at this point that Trump demands loyalty from everyone who "works for him" (even though that's not how the presidency works) but offers absolutely none in return.

Trying to force appointment of a non-recused AG (who then would go after Mueller) will smell like obstruction; someone has advised Trump that it looks better if Sessions quits.

This. Sessions will not get fired unless Trump gets sufficiently scared that he determines he has no other options.
Sessions knows allot and Trump probably knows he'll rat him out for ousting Sessions out of his dream job.

I would think it likely that there might be some sort of deal whereby there is some Dem votes for the appointment in return for getting the Independent Councel reinstated, particularly if they are asked point blank if they are going to interfere, say they won't, then do.
The House is down the rabbit hole. The Senate might but the House is a lost cause...
