(UK) GAME and PlayStation are complicit with scalpers and it's infuriating now.

I'm a pretty big collector of games and have been for a long time. But a sizeable problem with the market in the UK at least, is the lack of game retailers. Sure, the super markets do stock select titles and you have a plethora of online shops to choose from, but that doesn't really matter when a certain retailer, for those outside the UK this is a company called literally, GAME, get all the collectors editions in the UK as exclusives. Thus when they run out of stock, you can't get them anywhere else anyway.

This never used to be a problem and I don't know what's changed as much because the rules haven't changed. The day pre-orders go live, gamers got a fair chance at ordering their desired edition or item and they still had regular stock for a reasonable time period. Now? Not so much. Now the item sells out in less than 5 minutes and if you're extremely lucky, you get one.

It's gradually been getting worse over the years, I'd probably say much more since about 2018 that I personally noticed it with Yakuza 6 and God of War (2018) where it sold out in less than an hour. In fact, it got that bad that I went into my local branch of GAME for 10:20am for the Death Stranding edition and it had gone. My local branch was allocated 5 copies. And staff members had ordered 3 of them. Luckily, the store manager who knew I was a long time customer actually gave me his order as he was only going to give his away as a present for his brother who loved Kojima games if he didn't like the game.

So God of War Ragnarok pre-orders went live today right? 10:00am was the advertised time. Except, I logged on and was ready for 10:00am and GAME had already made the game go live. So I put the Jotnar edition in my basket and went to pay. It shows the price on the website but doesn't allow me to complete the order. At 10:03am, the Jotnar edition was sold out.

Okay, bad luck I guess? Pretty big title in terms of expectation right? So I try to collectors edition. At 10:10am (because this was the quickest I could get to it with the website being so slow) the collectors edition was sold out.

So I went across the road at work to go and pre-order the Jotnar edition and they told me that they weren't getting the collectors or Jotnar edition for pre-order in store.

I can't pin exactly how early they went live, but some users say 9:56am and some say they got an order in at 9:48am. Either way, they didn't go live at 10:00am and they gave scalpers plenty of change to do their thing. For those, who care, check out the prices on eBay people are listing their orders for. Jotnar Edition is £600 and Collectors edition is £400.

But the truth is far more simple than this. The truth, I believe is that Sony and GAME don't give a shit. GAME is a failing company that had it's market share eaten away by supermarkets and online retailers because they failed to adapt to the shift to online shopping quick enough. The change to digital games has hurt them even more and in attempt to survive this, they're moving all their branches into Sports Direct (so no additional housing costs) and they've started selling merchandise, toys, collectible card games and Warhammer etc. For Sony, they obviously want to sell these items but at the same time digital games makes them more money. I get it. So why care right? So far it seems like Sony have left it to the companies to regulate themselves, but this can't be trusted. GAME have repeatedly stated they will do their best to deter scalping but in reality they've done fuck all. Please don't think too badly of me, but I work for a local Cash Converters store and over the past year we've seen customers with up to 40 PS5 and XBOX Series X consoles trying to sell them for a profit that they bought from GAME via their website or other retailers when the limit imposed by Sony was one per customer. So for GAME, it's a guaranteed sale. Brilliant.

For me, it's disappointment and despair yet again. GAME have made no solid effort to deter this. Everyone involved in the chain are going to make profit so they don't give a fuck and I'm sat here thinking what's the point.

Now I just want Sony to take complete control over the situation and allow me to only order directly from them. I suppose that's the best way to deter this shit from being a continuous problem.

Of course Sony and Game don’t give a shit. Preorders have been made and they have sold out. Their job is done and they don’t care who those items go to and what they do with them.

They might make a statement to say that they are against this, but until they actually take proper action, I don’t believe them.

Edit: Despair? That’s the phrase you want to use because you can’t preorder a collectors edition of a game? Come on… you’ll be able to pick up one of these editions for half the price in a few years. Just pick up the normal edition and hold out for a while, it’s not like you can’t play the game.

Why would they give a shit?
They sold out a product. They have the money. They could not care less.

With consoles i can understand if they were pissed about scalpers. Because they are loosing money on every console and needs active user who will spend his money to offset that loss. But with stuff like collector's edition of a game?

You kinda answered your own point here, GAME have been struggling for years because nobody walks to a shop to buy a physical game for more than they can get it for via Amazon, other than mums. Last time I bought something from GAME was the very original GTA V release at midnight because I was in uni at the time and went home to play it all night. I really cannot blame them for doing whatever they can to make money and not really care about where that money comes from.

They peddle in awful useless plastic shit like the aforementioned collector's editions and as long as they sell their allocation, they've done their job. The problem isn't really exclusive to either company and Sony haven't been too bad about it honestly, the latest batch of consoles available directly via their website were pretty easily available to anyone actually trying to get one. They're barely worth scalping any more.

Absolute nonsense.

Playstation has tried to introduce legislation in a number of EU countries which forces retailers not to sell multiple units to a singular customer. It's got so bad that they've started selling consoles directly and in direct competition with their retail partners. In addition, in one of their earnings conference calls Sony stated that they lose money if the consoles aren't able to reach customers.

ebay prices correlate directly with a products hype. Always has. I've been trying to find a TLOU Remake firefly edition and the prices are eye watering. That doesn't mean I have to agree to pay those prices.

The amount of people who bought scalper PS5s is out of control, there are hundreds of thousands who got played out of desperation.

Now the scalpers are targeting collector's editions and accessories. It's disgusting, they are making millions scamming the system.

We need the death penalty to solve this, or at the very least stoning.

Apologies, but that's blatantly untrue. There is only one copy of the God of War 2018 collectors edition on eBay right now in England, it's £160 and it's only for the figure. The rest is missing. God of War 2018 is being sold by CEX for £220 for the collectors edition which is what I paid originally.

Resident Evil 2 Remake collectors edition that I narrowly missed out on, there is one for sale on eBay for £550 and it's £310 in CEX.

There is one copy of Horizon Zero Dawn collectors edition on eBay currently and again, only for the box and statue and it's £220 or £250 from CEX.

Days Gone collectors edition on eBay is £200 cheapest surprisingly £150 in CEX. But that game wasn't as such of a success as we already know Ragnarok will be.

Death Stranding collectors edition. £245 on eBay. Jesus christ.

People do this for a reason. Because mostly those collectors editions retain value or they're treasured by gamers like myself. I keep all my collectors editions.

You want a real laugh? Look at what God of War 3 Pandora Box or Uncharted 2 Fortune Hunter Edition goes for. There's one for sale on eBay at $7,000 AUS dollars. None sold in the past 12 months.

Yeah, the supply issue has worked itself out with consoles, the point I poorly was trying to make is that at the height of this scalping fiasco they continuously stated they'd stop people from doing it and they didn't.

If you work for cash converters why are you complaining. One will probably come in there and youll be able to get it discounted

Okay the bit at the end is a bit much but for the most part.

Tried and to the best of my knowledge, failed. If they were serious about it, they'd regulate it themselves. At the end of the day, it's harming their brand image and hurting their wallets, as you've rightly said.

If you work for cash converters why are you complaining. One will probably come in there and youll be able to get it discounted

We don't really get many of those and I don't get a discount. It's company policy that items have to be on sale for at least 4 weeks before staff can buy them.

Despite popular image, we aren't what people think we are. Every Cash Converters store in the UK belongs to a franchisee and mine is very, very strict.

I feel your frustration, I really wish it wasn't just GAME who had the special editions and also that there were generally just more of them made considering I've seen a ton of people who are sad about missing both the firefly last of us edition and gow today.

Not sure why it feels so few are made, surely it's just free money for everyone involved as demand is clearly exceeding supply.

I failed to grab the Jotnar edition today at 10:02 - I was going quite slow as I didn't think it would be this crazy but then was able to grab the collectors edition at 10:04. Very happy with the moderate victory but really is crazy how fast they sold out.

PlayStation is definitely trying to end this though, by introducing PS Direct in a lot more markets.

Not talking about the GOW situation in particular but why would Sony want consoles to be bought by bots? They want people to buy them, play on their ecosystem, that's literally how they make the money: you buy the unit, buy subscriptions and games.

They have no interest in these units sitting around somewhere being sold for 800 or 900 euros.

About this situation, they have no interest in those packages being sold for 500 euros on ebay. Many of them will stay there for god knows how long and they won't be making any more money than having people buying for the price they are asking. I'm sure they prefer these to be with people that will actually play them.

Honestly just stop caring about it, its the best way. This scalper culture in gaming turned me off Amiibo's so I just walked. I bought some little chip I hook up my phone that pretends it's whatever ammibo I want so I can unlock any content Nintendo wants to hide as physical DLC.

You will be much happier honestly and you won't have a ton of plastic tat taking up your house, like some random statue of Kratos you might remember to look at every time you do the dusting.

End of the day the game will still be there, that's what you should be paying for and this is coming from someone who's current office looks like this.

If anyone is willing to pay 600 pounds for a pre order of a game....I have no idea.

Maybe I'm too old or fucked in my way of thinking that people even have 230 pounds to pay for a limited edition of a game.

I would maybe pay 99.99 tops for a game that I love if it was some genuine awesome Ltd edition. I dunno...it just seems crazy to me.

When PS6 launches and I have the chance I will buy couple to sell to people that don't have a problem paying for the same product double price. If no one bought the scalped consoles no one would do it. Free money in a difficult word is always welcomed

So, this is actually fairly common. I buy a fair number of limited release items that are set to drop at specific times and this is pretty normal. My basic strategy when trying to get an item with a drop like this is to go to the website about 10 minutes early and just start refreshing. You usually find that the item goes up about a minute or two before the specified time. If there's more than one item dropping, they sometimes populate unevenly. So, one item will drop while the others lag. I'm not sure why this happens, but I assure you, GAME is not the exception. So, yeah, if you want a hot item, don't log in when they tell you to. Log in 10 minutes early and refresh refresh refresh.

Consider yourself fortunate. The amount of collectors stuff I've thrown out over the years is just shameful. It's pretty low quality plastic junk that is just going to take up space.
Scalpers do suck and I agree something needs to change because they are truly messing up so much for a lot of people.
I still haven't been able to get a system because of this.

OP you do realise outside of specialist games shops supermarkets etc have no interest in getting these collectors editions in their stores. Sony has no choice unless they sell them direct themselves

Naaa there all... mostly older or niche ones, I used to collect the AC ones as you can see but dropped off after Black Flag where Ubisoft had like 4 diffrent collectors editions and scalping was starting to get main stream. Soon after I stopped buying Ubisoft games full stop.

I occasionally get a limited run game for something really special like Crosscode or C&C Remastered, but the import charges add anouther 25% to the cost often.

And now the rooms full up so it's like.... what's the point? I don't really admire them or flick through the art books, they just sit there taking up space, its the games connected to them that are the real joy.

That's like stealing all the bread from the store, selling it for 400 bucks per piece, and when people call you out for your shit you like "hey, people buy it so it's not wrong, free money is always welcomed."

Scalping isn't stealing. If you went and bought all the bread from the store then sure but there is no bread shortage so people would just go to other stores. There was a toilet paper shortage recently and some idiots did actually scalp.

I’m absolutely with you on this one. I remember thinking I was out of my mind when I paid £80 for the Halo 3 Legendary Edition back in the day.

The cost of these now is just unbelievable.

GAME don't care

They're barely making money these days as it is afaik and won't be long till administration hits again.

I used to work for them before the first administration and the things the higher ups wanted you to do to make sure you hit targets wasn't exactly my thing.

In those industries, if you scalped on this level, you would get jailed.

In every war or famine people have resorted to bread. If you are Christian you know this from the history. When the Jews left Egypt and there was a time of testing for them and they didn't have food. They made prayers to the God and the God rained Mana. And it's widely known that Mana was a kind of bread. Don't put your shit plastic in the same category as bread.

Did you just bring in jesus, god, egypt and wars to justify how PS5 scalpers aren't scumbags? how high are you right now, be honest.

Remember what they did with the first wave of ps5 preorders, release it for pre order right after the reveal conferance and no one was expecting it. Sweaty scalpers no doubt where ready and waiting.

In all seriousness I like how Valve handled the Index, I believe only valid accounts as of a certain date were able to purchase or enter to purchase.

Yeah I think you had to have a steam account and purchase 6 months before it was announced. Even that didn't stop issues pre-ordering it though.

Quick tip. Use apps, not websites. You wint lose it out of your basket then.

Also, be earlier than you think you need to be.

Got my ps5 day 2 this way.

As for physical stores, be there before opening. Cant turn up an hour later and be mad about missing stock.

But i agree, its a problem. Especially with online orders being actually scalped. They need to implement systems where you get allocated the next available item when its in stock.

Although im sure i saw something from sony the other day offering the chance to be next in line for new console stock.

This isn't strictly a Sony problem though, so am not sure why you're singling them out, MS, Nvidia etc etc.

GAME fair enough as they should be doing better than this by now, but lets be honest, they're getting the money so don't give a fuck and I can hardly see Mike Ashley being that bothered by it either.

Sony delivers the games and special editions to the retailers, thats theyr part of it. The retailers want to sel it and cash in asap. They dont give a fuck who buys it they dont gonna ask are you gonna resell it on Ebay? They see that not as theyr responsability, they dont care, sold is sold.
Is it on Sony to demand that retailers dont sell it to scalpers?
How do you think that will work? That retailers will say: yes Sony whe will be controlling every costumer if he is gonna resell it on Ebay? Retailers dont care, sold is sold. The money is in the pocket, deal is done, end of story
