Virtua Fighter Reboot Could Be in the Works – Rumor

Great news to get some confirmation. I just got two suggestions to SEGA if they want the IP to really hit it big.

1: Bring it back as close to the VF4 aesthetic/style as possible. Stylistically, this was VF at its height and is a big reason why it was the first one to see some mainstream success in the West. VF has never been cooler than it was during the VF4/VF4: EVO generation and that's what SEGA need to build off of style-wise.
VF4's still got the best stages, character designs, and OST of the whole franchise IMHO.
2: Zero in on real-life martial arts tournament-style systems. If they can have a Career mode that's closer to real-life tournaments in the structure, rulesets etc., I think that'd do a great job at selling the simulation side of the IP.
Marrying that with flashier (but still grounded) moves and with some actual narrative stories for the cast could break the IP into the mainstream.

Already a foregone conclusion it'll be a multiplat release with Day 1 support on PS5, Series X/S and Steam, so that should go without saying. But I also think prioritizing a Switch 2 version will do wonders for it, especially in markets like Japan.

The blueprint is all there; all SEGA's gotta do is execute on it.

I need them to update sound design. It is terribly outdated. I am tired of hearing fake robotic jet noises. Also, the voices are getting stale. The music is consistently good though.

That's great news of the confirmation of a new Virtua Fighter game in development.

I really hope the next VF game expounds on what VF5 Final Showdown introduces and later VF5 Ultra Showdown system also establishes, which are situations that oftentimes involve side-turned and back-turned strike and/or throw exchanges between fighters. The throw and throw escape system along with the reversal and sabaki mechanics that feature in VF5FS are also well done. VF5 Final Showdown also offers a wide variety of character custom costumes and items that would hopefully carry over to the next VF.

no meters please

...oh god it will totally have supers/ultras/ex-moves won't it?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Hope it has a story like the Game Gear (and Master System, where you couldn't block without the start button, lol) game but for every character, not some overarching story mode like recent MK/Tekken/even SF games...

That's all the VF games ever lacked, something to make the characters more than vanilla representations of fighting styles, everything else they did has been lifted by competitors that garnered more mainstream appeal.

Shenmue would have also been better as an Akira origin story where he meets all the favorite cast instead of randoms and ditching all the magical stuff for something more like the anime seen here but oh well, too bad.

I don't blame Sega revitalizing their old ip's after the success of their recent releases.

They might as well cash in now while the western developers have switched their target audience from gamers to the mentally disabled.

I would prefer a proper follow-up to VF3. Bring back the evade button and uneven stages! Get rid of the countless stances that just keep confusing me when I trigger them by accident. And at least make it optional to disable those silly explosions whenever someone is hit.

VF2 was magic to me when I had my Saturn. So smooth. I want them to capture whatever it is that one had.
I had a smoother experience with the original Virtua Fighter on the 32X.

That would pretty much mean removing Lei-Fei from the game... I do want side turned state to bite the dust though. Also want to have my eagle stomp on KOed opponents with Lau and body slam from El Blaze back. Victories feel hollow without corpse kicking.

P.S. I sincerely hope it is not another version of VF5. The original came out in 2006 for Pete's sake.

I don't care about Lei-Fei either way. But I'm a Kage player first and foremost and Sega has been confusing me with stupid additions to his move set for ages now. This was not a problem in VF3! Which had some stances, like Shun's handstand, but at least then you didn't stumble into them by keeping some button pressed at the wrong time or such.

Well I do. Just hit up practice mode instead of mashing with Kage because some of his coolest moves are only available with a stance. Also, other characters like Brad depend on smooth stance transitions incorporated into moves to be formidable.

I don't mash. Clearly you don't even understand the problem.

And all the Internet personalities will put out videos about how great VF and its legacy is despite never playing it or showcasing it regularly on any of their channels. And it will sell terribly like all virtua fighter games.

Manufactured Hype. No one cares. Not even the content creators. They just making videos for clicks.

As long as it is entertaining and sells well enough to justify future releases who cares?

Just seems so disingenuous. I’ve already seen some fight game related channels reporting the news, having literally never talked about the series before, complete with stupid surprised faces on the thumbnails. They don’t give a shit about VF, and I’d be willing to bet that most have never even played a single entry in the series.
It’s just disgusting to see. It makes me retch.

Think of it as free marketing. The more eyes on the game, the more potential buyers.

Sega beating Tekken 8's graphics by a mile is the least I want, after all Tekken 8 has characters with a lot of mass but in uninspired stages, Tekken also retains a very anime aspect to the characters that I don't particularly like.
