Warhammer |OT| 40k, AoS, specialist games, other miniature games - Need more DAKKA!

Yeah i know, my buddy who is my mentor told me to first learn how to paint base layers correctly and which color is a great base for others.

Regarding washes: isnit like "one for all" or do you need to have few different colors?
You can get away with nuln oil, flesh and agrax earthshade but washes of all colors is great.

Your base color work is very good as someone who is starting. If you add a wash to that and a small highlight of the original color plus a lighter one it'll be great :)

I'm more concerned about paint chipping. Now i checked the photo and see there are a few parts where the paint just got off. Any help with that? Transporting them to play looks like a pain in the ass
On dark colours you could use one wash, but light colours like caucasian skin or bonewhite don't look good with black wash. Obviously different washes are giving different effect so in the end having multiple colors is beneficial, but even really limited palette of washes is better than nothing.
For chipping at this point maybe some polyurethane varnish like vallejo one (Premium RC-Color or new Game Color) could help a little, but you need to properly wash minis and use good primer or paint will chip.

Thanks for the tips. On my next trip to my local store i'll look around their wash stock and take at least one home.

Could be that the reason for chipping is my primer. I started the hobby on a tigh as fuck budget and went to my local "dollar" store and bought a can of primer. Dunno, the prices just seem so high for that, be it citadel, army painter or we miniature painting brand...

Just for fun started the next one:

I need to get a printer. Not to make bootleg armies, but just to have stuff to paint. The price of some figures is bonkers

Lion would win a war, bar none the greatest tactician. Roboute is the greater politician, better rounded, commander and one of the best politician the imperium has ever seen.

Lion will win you a battle.

But Bobby G is the man for a longer war.

Like the old saying: amateurs talk about tactics, pro's talk about logistics

Bought the little kit that came with 3 snap together Ultra Marines and the paint to dip my toe into painting minis. Just finished the first one and think I did half way decent. What do y'all think? The pauldrons could have been better but I've got two more to practice on. Had a blast painting. Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. Was nice to drink a couple beers plus a whiskey and focus on something that didn't matter. Definitely planning to do more in the future. Still don't think I will get into playing the actual game but will have some cool stuff to put on my desk. For the Emperor!

Also might get some ov da doyz kuz i luv dose gits

Looking good, man! I'm with da orkz myself. Those guys are a blast to paint. Lots of personality.

Lion would beat Guilliman in likely any battle. In the event of a grand war, Roboute would ultimately defeat him. Because wars are won by logistics, and that is what Guilliman is the master of.

So on a larger timescale The Lion would lose.

Ultra Marine #2 done. Tried to add a little more detail to this one and used the wash and technical paints this time. Could have been cleaner but think I did better than my first one over all. Amazes me that people get better results in a fraction of the time that I spent on a single mini. Also these things are freaking hard to take pictures of lol

Man how do you find motivation to paint, all my sisters of battle are still grey.
Sit down and paint? It's one of these activities where the motivation comes once I start them, I can sit there for hours and just paint without noticing how many hours have passed. How do you want to paint your sisters of battle? To be fair, the SoBs are not the easiest army to paint as they have so many small details, unlike space marines or custodes that you could just paint by spraying them one solid colour, dipping them in a pot of wash and add a few details here and there.

It's a really good time to be a Warhammer 40,000 fan if you are a video gamer. There's been a lot of exceptional games released recently and coming out in the near future.

Rogue Trader is still my favorite spin-off and I've actually been begging for a computer role-playing game based off of it and we're finally getting one.

I want a "Dark Age of Technology" prequel that shows us what that era look like. I mean I know it looks completely different and more like a standard high tech space opera future which is why we'll probably never see it.

Well that, and I understand they want to keep it as a mystery.

I just really want to know what it looks like.

Only if they fully explain the men of iron, gold, and stone.

Also, drop some hints on an stc location.

And we know they will never do that so we'll never get to see what the Age of Technology looks like. We'll just get hands here and there like that one really sleek ship day once found that was really advanced. I think there was also some kind of robot they found from that time but it looks kind of retro.

GW is going to continue making it a mystery for as long as they can. I understand that but I still would love to see what it was like.

Ok, I did something that certain parts of the internet will object to, and I'm not ashamed :p

Say hello to the Valkyries:

The choosers of the slain; some say these mysterious figures appear on the battlefields of the 41st millennium to select those who prove themselves worthy in combat and guide them to the great halls of Leman Russ, to join him during the Wolftime.

Also building some Lizards for Warcry:

Also been building the important half of the Leviathan box set, the Tyranids of course. More on that later.

Anyone had a crack at painting McFarlane action figures? My eyes are way too fucking old for miniature painting these days, and I fancy having a crack at something bigger. Wondering how much paint I might need.

Fuck it.

I'm getting bored of video games and I need a new nerdy hobby. I love the 40K lore and I think it's time to finally get into the hobby.

I'd start out building and painting, but eventually would get into the gaming side as well.

With the release of 10th edition and the new Tyranids codex on the way, I'm probably going to make those my starter army. However, down the road I'd also collect Tau, Grey Knights and Chaos Demons.

Good thing I have a well paid job!

Even poor you can really get into painting and building! Just look for "NOS" on Ebay and other sellers. New On Sprue. Usually cheap bits and bobs that you can get for nearly 50-75% off the normal price. As for paints, just a few primary colors and you can mix your own to make anything else. Add cheap 5 dolllar brush sets and a paper towel + Parchment paper wet pallete and you are golden! That is how I painted for quite a while.

Oh no, no. I am painting mini's, just not 40k.
I got a buddy who prints me from time to time some community figures for games like Horror Arkham or stuff like that.

I just don't have the cash to go 40k. Starters are fine, but to score a good high point value army? Nah out of my budget 😏

I may well jump back on the horse with 10th edition. It's been many years since I played, so it'll probably feel like a brand new game. I'd strongly advise you pop into your nearest Warhammer store if it's not too far away. They're always happy to chat, and you might even find a beginners meet up you can go to and learn. That's what I'll do. Playing takes a hell of a lot of commitment!

Warcry, kill team, underworlds, there's plenty Warhammer games you can play with just a handful of models.

Warhammer doesn't only mean 2k Warhammer 40k armies on giant tables. In fact I think their small unit count games are more fun to play, I love Warcry but can't be bothered to play AoS. I've not played "real" 40k in years, but play regularly kill team which just needs 4 custodes if I'm going for minimum model count 😉

I've been doing some lore diving and I'm really into the Tau. Think I'll make them my first army. Not the standard vanilla Tau either, but the breakaway Farsight Enclaves. They appear the only "good guys" in 40K, which makes them pretty interesting.

However, I get the feeling the Farsight Enclaves are being set up for Chaos Tau. Commander Farsight has been tempted by the Chaos God Khorne. Then there is the fact that the commanders of the Farsight Enclaves are called the Eight, and eight is the number of Khorne. I hope this isn't the case, but the signs are there.

I think you're right on the money there. Farsight is secretly a Khorne worshipper, definitely. There's too much evidence mounting up, and nobody stays even remotely good in 40k for any length of time. They're giving him the 'I'll do whatever's necessary to win' motivation against the orks, which is always the start of a slide into chaos. I'd actually like it if they did something different, but that kind of attitude leading to corruption is a cornerstone of 40k, so it's more than likely going to happen at some point.

My god, the lore of 40K is just so epic. Nothing comes remotely close to it. I'm binging a 40K lore podcast at the moment (Adeptus Ridiculous) and can't stop.

It's amazing, but it's making the job of choosing an army that much harder. Just listened to a deep dive on the Necrons and their lore is just......*chef kiss*. Also their models are fucking amazing. That C'tan, Shard of the Void Dragon model is absolutely nuts. I mean just look at it!

99120110054_CTanShardoftheVoidDragonLead.jpg

I even just purchased the Nightlords Omnibus novel because I heard they were actually decent works of fiction and I'm pumped to start it.

I thought the gym, Rugby and Football would be my only true addictions. Looks like I can add 40K to the list as well.

Welcome to the club! Necron are some of my favorite models in the game. They can be easy to paint for beginners too, especially the warriors.

Honestly the only race in this game I do not care for are the Eldar, and that is mostly due to how they look in terms of models. I don't much care for cone heads or the super smooth mechs.

Started a while back, but now I have a Necron Army, Leagues of Votann Army (probably my favorite of the races thus far), Dark Angels Slightly Customized Marine army, and a Chaos army.

Recently got into AOS too and started a Kharadron overlords army and a Seraphon army. Been eyeing the Cities of Sigmar box too! This hobby is so much fun and I have only actually played like maybe 3 games? I am having too much fun painting them.

Yeah, the Necron lore is cool. Always loved the ‘fuck you god’ attitude they have 😂

And you’re right, nothing comes even close in terms of depth. 40k is a setting, not a story, so you can have almost anything you like going on across the Galaxy. Horror/sci-fi/fantasy/comedy/action… you name it, 40k has it. I’ve been reading the lore for ages, and there are still things I don’t know shit about. The Tau and Eldar lore are things I know little about other than the main stuff, for instance. Hell, I only started to read the actual Heresy pretty recently. It’s insanely huge.

Good man on getting Nightlords omnibus. It’s a great series of books. I used to play a Night Lords army, and a Raven Guard one, as I’m all about the creepy Batman rip offs 😂 If I get back into playing again, I have no doubt I’d do the same thing.

Have you read all of Abnett’s Inquisition trilogies? I’d say they are the absolute best of the books, imo. But I think Nightlords omnibus is right behind them. The Cain books are a blast if you want something a bit lighter.

Necrons are one of the front runners at the moment. Not only do their models look amazing, but in terms of painting they don't look that difficult. I also looked at Adeptus Mechanicus, but a lot of their models look like a bitch to paint.

I actually like the Elder models, especially the wraith lords and wraith knight. Not my favourite, but I don't hate them. The only army is really don't care for are Orks. They just look too comical. I know that's their vibe, but it doesn't do anything for me.

40K is so epic and the absolute peak of British Grim Dark. It's so epic that I'm not even sure Amazon will be able to do it justice with their TV series, even with Henry Cavill as executive producer. I'm just not sure it'll get the budget it needs. This is why I think they're make it an animated series rather than live action.

Night Lords are very cool. I listened to a podcast recently about their history and Konrad Curze and loved the fucked up Batman vibes.

This Omnibus will be my first time reading any 40K novel. I've heard Abnett's books are amazing and they're absolutely on my TBR list. No idea when I'll get to them as my TBR list is getting out of control!

I am... cautiously optimistic. Henry's concern about staying true to the source material is well documented with that mess he went through over on Witcher.

Also, Amazon Studios UK are taking the lead on the development with Vertigo, which is a good sign. Let's just say they are a different bunch of people from the ones who work at Amazon Studios USA, and that's a very good thing. It shouldn't suffer from the same issues Rings Of Power did. If for nothing other than the fact that Salke won't be directly involved.

Also, there's no way Max Bottrill and Andy Smillie are going to let Amazon change anything GW do not 100% approve of. It's not like with the Tolkien Estate, who couldn't give a shit as long as they got paid. GW do not need a live action adaptation to sell their products. If anything, Amazon are the ones who want the deal more, because of the product throughline they can establish.

They need to establish a writer's room with Guy Haley, Dan Abnett, Aaron DB and Gav Thorpe as soon as possible.

Fingers crossed, but I think if it's going to happen, it will be done in a satisfactory manner.

I'm happy Henry Cavill is involved. Also happy to hear GW are very involved. If there was a chance of Amazon fucking this up then GW would pull the plug. Like you said, GW don't exactly need the funds.

Question to you (and any other 40K fan on here).

What do you personally want to see from this series? Something that eases people into the 40K universe, or just go full metal day one with Chaos and C'Tan etc?

As much as I would love to see them just go straight at the coolest moments such as the Necron/Old One war or Day of Ascension - I think the best thing to do would be to start slow and introduce people to this vast universe. Maybe have it start as an anthology series, get its legs, and then go full bore with the Horus Heresy as a series.

By necessity, they have to begin with a story that revolves around a human character. And it should be a character who the audience can discover the wider universe with. I'd even go so far as to use a completely original character. Maybe one of the astra militarum, or a trainee inquisitor. Somebody who discovers all the cool mysteries of 40k alongside an audience of people who probably won't be familiar with the lore.

Definitely don't start with space marines as protagonists. They should be like a hurricane. A force of awesome nature. They'd be terrible as protags for a series or movie.

Once you've unveiled the lore piece by piece for the audience, then you can bring in more of the heavy stuff.

And Cavill should play the emperor - along with all the primarchs. They are his 'sons' after all. CGI and make-up can change his appearance. Expensive, yes. But quite fitting, and would give Henry plenty to do.

Stuff like the dark age, old night, unification and heresy should be kept as background for the 40k present.

Eventually, I'd like a shared universe of shows and movies. Eisenhorn noir series, especially. And a hive city action show. And a horror show. And a Rogue Trader star trek like show. And, and, and...

- No explanation of the Dark Age of Technology. That shit has to remain as vague as possible.
- Astartes should be only background characters, making a series about them will end badly
- Grimdark. Very. Fucking. Grimdark. With servitors and all.
- No Horus Heresy. It should be 40k, not 30k.

Oh and maybe instead of a single story season tell multiple short stories? Episodes about every major faction, but with the Imperium as one side of the conflict?

That way they would be able to show all of the struggles of the lore? A bit about the Necrons, Tyranids or Orks? Maybe a episode or two about the Mechanicum searchng for lost archeotech? Chaos infiltration?

The possibilities are literally endless with such a big universe.

Agreed. People unfamiliar with the lore would need to be eased in gently. As much as I'd love to see the Hours Heresy, or something mental like an Avatar of Khaine mixing it up with a Hive Tyrant, the general public just wouldn't be able to handle it. Most people would probably have seizure from that level of awesomeness straight away.

Eventually, I'd like a shared universe of shows and movies. Eisenhorn noir series, especially. And a hive city action show. And a horror show. And a Rogue Trader star trek like show. And, and, and...

Same as above, people need to be eased in gently with a relatable (as much as possible in 40K) character.

I don't see Henry Cavill as the Emperor. I see him as a Primarch, maybe Lion El'Jonson, but I've always imagined the Emperor to be played be somebody slightly older. I agree that he needs to play somebody epic. Henry Cavill can't play a mere mortal.

Oh and maybe instead of a single story season tell multiple short stories? Episodes about every major faction, but with the Imperium as one side of the conflict?

That would be cool as the main series or an animated spin off series. Something like the Fall of Shadowbrink would cover the Tyranids, Chaos Demons and the Imperium.

However, as stated above, that should be well in the future. Get people prepared and lubed up first before blinding them with that sort of epicness!

Yes. An Anthology series would be the best way to introduce folks to the setting and all its diverse inhabitants. Heck, you could have a single episode introduce two warring factions at once. Have the MIlitarum fight against Tyrannids before being saved by Astartes. Have the Necron wake up and face off against Eldar. Have a grim dark comedy episode about Orcs having fun in Khorne's realm. Have the Tau deal with the Adeptus Mechanicus.

You can kill two birds with one stone and cover much of the universe with minimal episodes too while highlighting the fun and frantic nature of the universe.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
40K is so epic and the absolute peak of British Grim Dark. It's so epic that I'm not even sure Amazon will be able to do it justice with their TV series, even with Henry Cavill as executive producer. I'm just not sure it'll get the budget it needs. This is why I think they're make it an animated series rather than live action.
I forgot if they said it was going to be live action or not but you're correct - the show will have a hell of a time trying to be epic. The budget is going to have to be huge on this as well if it's a live-action show.
