We need a new Playstation 5 Media Remote

After a few years of using that Playstation 5 Media remote it just sucks the llamas ass. Not enough buttons. Like the streaming buttons but not enough of them.

The Playstation 3 media remote? Absolute banger. Had every single function for the blu ray player, controlled my tv, sound bar, and supported the 3d functionality along with hdmi inputs and had extra buttons that were programmable. Hell, I use my Playstation 3 as a blu ray player over my PS5 due to how good that remote is.

Why hasn't Sony released a new media remote for the Playstation 5? There's more then four streaming services. Gimme one with 10 streaming buttons minimum. Let me control all the blu ray player functionality. Let me control my tv and sound bar. And for god sakes stop making it so fragile. The PS5 remote seems to work when it wants to and is finicky as hell. My PS3 remote is still going strong after 15 years. Another thing that annoys me is that the Playstation 5 remote doesn't seem to have a battery indicator. It kind of just dies without any warning. I changed the batteries five or ten times for each time I change the batteries in the Playstation 3 remote.

Hell, if Sony can give me a remote as good as the Playstation 3 remote with the streaming buttons, configurable, and lets me use the PS5 as a media center, I'd buy another remote in an instant.

Also, why is the functionality of the Playstation 5 blu ray player less then the functionality of the Playstation 3 blu ray player? The only positive is that it plays 4ks but for all intents and purposes, my Playstation 3 is a far better experience as a blu ray player.

I got an Apple TV for streaming stuff. It's remote is the only thing I really need in my entire home theater system.
Waiting for Apple to put an M4 in that and become the next challenger to Playstation, with cellphone games on my 82" TV.

Using a console for a full on media device in 2025?
I do? I don't see the need for other devices when I already have two (PS5 and Series X) already connected.

To the OP's point...I agree! Mine isn't so much a not enough buttons issue as it is rewinding or fast-forwarding every damn time I grab the controller. Have to pick the thing up like a delicate flower.

My thoughts exactly.

I have LG OLED TVs and they're all connected to Apple TV 4Ks but even if I didn't have the Apple TV 4Ks, I'd use WebOS over the PS5 for streaming media.

I'd love to know what percent of the market is using consoles as streaming players, it's got to be low. It's kind of a throw away to even have them on there in the first place. This guy is asking for a better remote, it's a surprise they even bothered with a remote in the first place and no you don't need a remote with 10 buttons for each streaming service... jesus...

I can sleep in my car. While it is not as comfortable as my bed it will still function as a bed in a pinch.

But I do own a bed and I have a car.

Sure, valid points about the remotes, why not, but I think Sony PlayStation has a lot more important things to worry about and correct before spending time and money on a remote control.

Get a Roku or something. You're just adding wear and tear to a $500 console. A $20 streaming device can do a better job streaming and there's more apps. Then get a universal remote since the Roku has ir.

Back in the day consoles were just about the best media devices but over the years the TV & other small devices ended up giving you so much more without running your console.

Console media remotes are relics IMO from the moment HDMI CEC exists since you can basically use your TV remote to control the console's UI/Apps.

I know that the Xbox always had problems with it for some reason, but, LG magic remote works wonders with my PS5

Honestly, I'm your guy.

This controller has to have a cover or it will shoot from your hand due to the beveling, it will skeet out and fly across the room.

Also, try it, if you let it run low on batteries and shake it, it will turn ON your PlayStation 5. Try that shit. It is hard to get it to work, but if you use it regularly you can tell when to change the batteries because that shit will start happening.

As you say, it also doesn't have the full function of the controller.

I'd give it a 2.5/5 stars on amazon. The good being that mine has lasted since launch and has been dropped many times. I use this thing several hours a day, but it is just a controller, so the bar is pretty low. No backlighting on the keys at all is another big issue. It's a cheap little deal and it feels cheap. If you mash it you can feel all the separate little sheets of plastic that make up the white and black sections moving around independently of each other in your hand. Also, no battery indicator even in the UI(maybe there is and I haven't noticed it but I called myself checking). Oh yeah, and it sucks battery power even though it is just a remote.

Let me guess, you hate people who drive sports cars when doing grocery shopping?
No but someone having the remote to use the PS5 as a media player & using it enough to want a better remote actually caught me off guard because PS3 was the last time that the media stuff even mattered to me.

I say this as a person who has only put Blu-ray UHD discs in my PS5

A few weeks ago one of my nephews loaded up YouTube when he was playing my PS5 & I turned it off & told Alexa to start YouTube on TV.

Hold up. Hold the hell up. This is my first time looking at a PS5 Media Remote... Sony really painted a Roku TV remote white and sold it for $30!? 0.0 PS3 did have the GOAT remote. Will a PS5 work with an old Logitech Harmony? That's probably the way to go. You could probably order a Sony tag to put on the bottom of it.

I tried the apps on the tv and they work slower and the interface is slower then the Playstation 5. I've used WebOS on LG tvs, I've used FireTV from Amazon and they all kind of suck. I have a Roku for the bedroom but it also seems to be a bit slower than the Playstation 5. Plus that remote is pure ir so if I lay down and don't aim it directly at the Roku, it doesn't register.

I have a logitech remote, but the batteries seem to drain a bit too quick for my liking. I prefer having several sets of AA or AAA batteries and swapping out without the thing dying after a week. The Logitech Harmony Ultra was also a pain in the ass to get working and didn't quite feel right. There's a sort of tactile feel in the buttons that I don't like from Logitech's remotes. Some are too damn stiff while others are soft and it makes no sense.

Agreed. Bought it twice and returned it each time. Unergonomic, laggy, and missing key functions. Main problem for me was lack of chapter skip buttons for blu ray movies. This is absolutely essential and even the Dualsense controller can do it via the shoulder buttons so I always ended up using that instead. I even found my Sony OLED TV remote to be a better media remote than the official remote, if not for the lack of a PS button.

I do disagree with some here about the PS5 as a media device though. I don't use it since I already had an Apple TV 4K but I still found it be quite solid and fast. Certainly light years better than my built in smart TV or some cheap Fire stick or Roku. And of course it is a 4K blu ray player which no streaming device has. If I didn't have the ATV I think I would be more than satisfied using the PS5.

Before 2020 I worked at a company doing apps for TVs, and there such numbers were discussed.
I don't remember those numbers anymore, but back then Playstation was one of the leading platforms for streaming.

I just use the PS4 universal remote on my PS5. Kept it from when I upgraded from PS4 to PS5.

The amount of PS3 glazing these days is hilarious.

Check out the amazon reviews for both products... it's not even close.
