What a 'full' Marathon run actually looks like

I'm scared to point out the obvious.

No need to be scared of voicing ur opinion, bro, all those marathon characters looking like skinny teenagers on betablockers afraid of becoming full fledged adult male/female, even if we assume postapocalyptic world where females wanna become males coz it increases their chance of survival/physical performance which somewhat could make sense- why the fuck males wouldnt wanna get their natural boost from becoming adult male- not wanting that actually decreases their physical performance and survivalibity rate, totally doesnt make sense ;D

you are both being very pedantic, it's like saying Warzone isn't a battle royale because you could get a loadout instead of only finding on the map. or that smash bros isn't a fighting game because it's less combo driven and more positional.

An extraction mode is an extraction mode. an extraction game is an extraction game whether it's popular or not. These games exist on console, such weird gatekeeping.
DMZ on COD was a flop because nobody plays COD for DMZ.

Get real.

Define 'popular'.

Besides, saying COD is an extraction shooter is like saying No Man's Sky is a racing game.
Popular as in, all over Twitch and Youtube, most of my COD friends list playing it.

He never said that, I believe he said DMZ was an extraction mode, which it is.

It wasn't a flop. Still played by thousands of people every day. As a matter of fact, Activision wanted to close the servers for it, but they're afraid to piss off the DMZ fans, so they keep them online.
It was also not a flop because it really wasn't much of an effort. They barely put any resources on it, unlike a Zombies mode.
It was them testing the waters.

And I said that an half-assed extraction mode in a game like COD doesn't mean there is too much competition for extraction shooters, because ultimately it's just Hunt and apparently that Vigor.

You said DMZ was a flop I was just pointing out it wasn't.

I agree there isn't much competition in the space at the moment but free to play Delta Force is coming to consoles very soon then you have Arc Raiders following closely also.

I know I'm not the target audience for this type of game, but I really find Bungie pretty small-minded... I mean, The Division 10 years ago had an open world, PvE activities, and a fully integrated extraction PvPvE zone — sounds way more ambitious than anything Bungie has done in the last decade.
I expected more from Bungie, it's looking like the first Destiny had alot more variety at launch compared to Marathon.
This just feels like a side project with hopes it'll stick while the majority of the studio works on something more ambitious.

Maybe it wasn't a flop then. I retract the statement.

It's going to be interesting.

Signed up for the Arc Raiders test, but knowing it's from the studio behind The Finals, I don't have high hopes (Finals gunplay was trash).
Delta Force looks interesting though.

It'll depend on which game has the best 'hook'.
Gotta try em all out first anyway.

The whole studio is either working on this or D2.

Delta Force is decent enough. Great package for "free"

Arc Raiders is looking completely different from what I've played. That game could go either way as well.

Really liking the look of Marathon, everyone who has actually played it the impressions are promising at the very least. Doesn't look like I'm in the Alpha unfortunately so will have to watch from the sidelines.

So dumb Bungie didn't elaborate on the games systems like this in their reveal. Wtf? It's like they were trying to cater to the most casual audience and it made the game come off as incredibly bland

In the long run, it won't matter too much. The Alpha and Beta tests will decide the trajectory of the game at launch. But, Bungie could have avoided a lot of the terrible press this past week. Hopefully lifting the NDA sparks confidence in the game being enjoyed by the masses. And at least Alpha testers can speak freely now because of their shit reveal

This looks more interesting.

I loathe that its all still tied to heroes. I'm getting the feeling that restricting or creating Hero classes allows for them to circumvent balance difficulties among other stuff.
There are many more variables/metas/exploits that could pop up allowing the player to create whatever they wanted. That being said, there are still restrictions you could place on build development that could help with reducing the scope of what is possible to build and ultimately break/cheese the game.

To reach a casual audience with the Extraction genre it's seems like removing the 'sting' of the hard loss is necessary. (makes sense)
Heroes
Faction Ability Baselines

I'm more excited to try it but very tired of Hero shooters and the aesthetic/influence they bring to gameplay/game design.

Seems like the 4th map, the Marathon, might be the end-game map, likely where ranked will take place.

They briefly talk about it (around 12:45), but it seems like we gear up and prepare our runners to attempt to run Marathon, kinda like Destiny raids.
Except here, you'll have to risk losing your character if you fail to get out alive, which means you'll have to prepare a new runner (or have a couple ready to go).

Maybe that's the catch? Definitely sounds interesting enough.

Dude where's al the 1440p/4K 60fps direct-feed footage?!

Everything I've seen so far has awful bitrate and runs at 24 cinematic frames or some shit. What a bizarre way to show off your new game.

As a big Destiny fan I think this looks fucking horrible.

I'm sure it will find its audience but I really hope they are not depending on all Destiny fans to just blindly accept something that took away resources from Destiny's pvp to the point where it just ….died

Yes, that's the gameplay loop. It sounds absolutely magnificent. Something I can easily throw thousands of hours at.

That would get me a lot more interested in the game

Bungie killed Destiny PVP because they couldn't monetise it, nothing to do with this game.

Dunno. Clearly I'm in the minority but I think it looks OK. Other teams are alerted to your presence when you go for the higher tier loot as well as mini bosses, which sounds a lot like hunt showdow. Hoping Bungie can emulate the sound around the map like explosions and gunfights in the distance. Graphically it looks fine. I don't think YouTube compression is being very fair on some of the footage.

Altogether, seems kind of like a mix of hunt & helldivers. For £40, why not. New maps, loot and modes should keep me interested

it's really ugly graphically... you can't tell what they were aiming for. Maybe a 70s Kraftwerk type style? Or something like the I, Robot movie? If the idea was to be inspired by Wipeout's Designer Republic... well then lol, change trades! Anyway, the result is messy, really crap to look at, makes my eyes bleed! And to think that Destiny all in all was pretty good, it had its own coherence even if it was a bit of a rip-off from Star Wars. This new title really makes a laughing stock graphically, it's not about being scalable, it's just obscene to look at, the viewer runs away from it, doesn't even try it... I marvel at Bungie!

One not discussed aspect of Marathon will be the efficiency of their updates.

Epic Games wipes out 50% of each big season update by removing the loot table every 3 months. They then will wipe out 95% of their content during new Chapter updates every couple of years (new loot + new map)

That has a level of inefficiency that Marathon won't have.

Every season will add 5 - 10 hours of content. This will likely start as a 10 - 20 hour RPG which will grow to a 70 - 80 hour RPG in a couple of years.

I think style wise it looks fine, but the characters are over-designed. Like they feel over-designed yet kinda all look samey due to that.

I've watched (well, skipped through) the videos in this thread and I just feel a complete sense of emptiness when I watch this game. I couldn't get into Destiny, but seeing videos of people playing it at least made me interested enough to find an excuse to spend money on it and dump a few dozen hours in.

With this, it's like looking at a manilla envelope stuck to a beige wall... :messenger_neutral:

another one. I didn't know their trailers had such bad like to deslike ratio and they even disable comments? wow

You can immediately disregard criticism when the focus is on art direction. That's bait for the drones. Nobody plays Valorant or Fortnite or Rust because of the art direction. Marathon will live or die based on other factors.

Go find some compelling criticism as there's valid concerns worth exploring. You can do it ChorizoPicozo ChorizoPicozo

I couldn't watch much because he starts out banging on art style and pricing model

Art style to me means nothing if the game is fun, I dont have thousands of hours in games like Rocket League because I am attracted to the visuals

Pricing models?

Did they reveal pricing? Did I miss that announcement?

Again if the game is fun it can be priced accordingly to me

It's not really about this particular video, but how the narrative has been settled; the topics of art direction, pricing model, Bungie's decline, hardcore vs mainstream fanbase and the type of game itself are working against Marathon's success.
Bungie has fumbled Marathon's "gameplay reveal"

The initial misunderstanding around the price point (which hasn't been confirmed either way) is the clearest example that this game is being pushed early ( as well as the fact that the narrative hasn't been written yet)

So Bungie is disabling comments on youtube now too? Ok, well fuck them, this game is completely fucked and their fragile asses can't handle it.
Doing shit like that is only going to backfire on them spectacularly.

It's a game that will certainly evolve from where it currently is. It is very evident that Bungie is clearly looking for community feedback to steer the direction. I don't view that as a bad thing. I think millions of gamers will be there at launch, regardless, solely because of their love for Bungie's gunplay. And as barebones as Marathon appears, there are tons of examples of successful gaas games that evolved from their launch. There is no reason to think Bungie won't properly adjust

They'll lose 0.00% of sales because they didn't announce price 6 months before release.

Narratives are often crap. Do not consume.

*because I'm just coming off a hot streak on halo infinite, and I'm felling gassed!*

Kicking your ass and taking all your loot. No offence but I'm a more skilled gamer than you are….. better instincts and reactions, see…….. I'm not searching for gear. I can let you and others do all the searching then just kill you and take everything. Sorry but I may aswell say it from now. You buy this game and run into me and I'm gonna give you what you paid for in a different way.

That's what you can expect a full run of this game against me, to look like. You wanna go right now?
