What about another 2D Zelda platformer game? There hasn't been one since the second game on the NES and I think it would be interesting to go back to a pure platforming to a 2d adventure game in the Zelda franchise.
 
I just think Metroid and Zelda overlap a bit too much in 2D. Don't get me wrong, if they made one I'd definitely get it. But I think that's basically just what Metroidvanias are. They'd have to put a lot of emphasis on creative puzzle design to make it stand apart.

in all seriousness an attempt at a 2.5d would be interesting, probs make cylindrical levels, depth of the maps ala Little Big Planet. Theres some room for interesting mechanics there.
 
Well, Zelda 2 was essentially a Castlevania game with a sword instead of a whip, so even though it's not the Zelda I.P. I recommend these two games OP:


 
They didn't even bother doing a Metroid for 19 years, and then they fobbed it off on some Spaniards when they finally did. Nintendo won't do a side scrolling Zelda outside of things like the rooms in Echoes of Wisdom.
 
Why not? Zelda 2 was a proto-metroidvania and it could be pretty cool. With more bosses, new abilities and the classic over-world map and the avoidable monster encounters. Wonderboy in Monster Land/World too is practically BEGGING for a modern metroidvania take.

Honestly im surprised they haven't tried to make a 'sequel' to Zelda II yet, with how unique it was, but i believe Nintendo simply decided the top down perspective from the original was better for the series.

Zelda Echoes of Time keeps the '2D' view while adding fresh mechanics ,surprisingly it has plenty of 2D sidescrolling sections as well so i don't think they need to make it like Zelda 2 it mostly affects the combat, the dungeon design is probably better the way they been doing
 
I hated Zelda 2 so it gets a no from me. I do think the lore would lend itself well to a full RPG style game though and I'd like to see that.
 
Honestly, Echoes of Wisdom is the most platformer-y game in the series since Zelda 2. There's a dedicated jump button, a ton of sidescrolling sections, and plenty of things to clamber up and hop around on. I'd say it's more like a platformer than BotW/TotK too.
 
Would love to see a new Zelda game in the vein of Adventures of Link. Even a remake would suffice. One of my favorite games in the franchise.
 
I like the Top-down or 3D games better, however, if they want to explore a side scroller again then they should at least consider it to be a MetroidVania.

 
Maybe, I actually thought the 2D sections in Echoes of Wisdom were a lot of fun.

But it might work better as something fun to break up the regular gameplay rather than a full game.

I'm not a fan of Zelda II at all.
 
It's an untapped niche that I'd be glad to see explored more by Nintendo. I always loved Zelda 2. I often do a quick run-through of the first half of the game when I want a quick 8-bit fix. The game controls supremely well, especially if compared to a lot of its NES contemporaries.

At this point I'd rather skip another top-down classic Zelda for this. That formula has been done to death. People shit on TOTK for recycling BOTW's overworld map, but at the same time they love A Link Between Worlds that does exactly the same with ALTTP's map (and it's an equally brilliant game).

The use of spells and buffs is another element that's never been done in the same way again. Other Zelda games use items for that and the open-world Zeldas have food and potions, but it's not the same.

Tons of games tried to copy Zelda 2. I don't remember one succeeding 100%. That game has a blending of action, difficulty, twitchiness, platforming and exploration that it's harder to nail down than one could think.
 
Konjak's fan game from 2009 could definitely work as a full thing. I can't find very good footage.

I wouldn't call that or Zelda 2 a platformer, side scrolling action adventures or RPG for the latter.

I know it's too soon but I'd rather have an Astro Bot sequel with an even bigger project scope. Perhaps even with local coop. Build on the solid foundation the first full-sized flat game has established. The first run of Mario and Sonic got a solid trilogy.
Get Kenneth CM Young cooking again.

If Princess Peach and Zelda are able to get kidnapped at the start of each game, then all of Astro's friends/relatives can get scattered across a new galaxy again, undoing all my hard work. I don't mind. I don't mind collecting exactly the same cameos again.

Wonderful trailer, insane pixel-art and fantastic music. Animations are too long though, would probably get annoying.

If only they controlled as well. Faxanadu would be so much better without the stupid character acceleration and the stiff jumping, and it's already a good game.
TBOO is even more punishing than Zelda 2, and definitely has some controls issues.
Both have elements that are even better than anything Zelda 2 offers. But Zelda just controls so much better.

I don't remember it being too hard, but then I didn't find NES hard at the time. Today I don't have the patience of dying just for the sake of dragging out the game.
 
3D Zelda games are incredible, the connection to Hyrule, the NPCs, all I imagine is Nintendo thinking about beyond 3D not going back to 2D.

Hardly. Zelda II's combat and RPG elements already set it apart as a Metroidvania.

I'd be all for bringing the puzzles back as well.

Also, anyone who says no is a fascist or a normie. Y'all got your FF7 remake trilogy. Let the rest of us have our fun.
