Ending based on gameplay / level design going off the rails in a really good way.

MGS1, excellent finale with rising stakes. Cemented the iconic Stinger at the end of the credits with a subverting twist to close the game.
The Last Guardian, just a really beautiful ending, music is beautiful. Just super sad.
Journey, just super emotional..Just play for yourself and see.
GoW3, Kratos killing himself after causing the apocalypse was fitting but really shocking to see the first time.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
I’ve heard great things about Soma in terms of endings. I feel like it was at least partially spoiled to me by Nexpo’s Petscop video, but I still want to play it someday.

ICO has my favorite ending of any game. SotC has a cool ending, but even though it is a better game, ICO has a better ending. Same with The Last Guardian.

ICO >>> TLG > SOTC

All great games.

I went blind with the endings of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and I really loved those endings. Tears of the Kingdom had a surprisingly great story!

Most Zelda’s have good endings, I still remember being shocked by The Wind Waker’s ending back in the GameCube. I find the game somewhat slow for my taste nowadays, but that ending was *chef kiss

13 Sentinels had a great ending

This final screen that you can read after you watch the ending is still one of the most wild explanations of what happened during the story of any video game ever

Red Dead Redemption

Marston getting out of the barn and being greeted by a posse of lawmen and what happens afterwards shocked me. I did not see that coming at all and it was pretty ballsy to end the main character like that. Added to that the epilogue where you play as his son and i went out found this guy and his family and murdered them all. 10/10.

I will always remember this one. I beat it for the first time with my buddy (who had already beaten it) and as we dueled at the very end, i managed to beat him and in his dying breath he said “enjoy your princess

And then pink weasels. Pink weasels and penguins everywhere

Really? I guess it's not in your face but they do bring up the fall of Reach in the original trilogy, and there's kind of a thing about you being THE spartan. So I wouldn't say it was shocking, but it was a fantastic ending and definitely stuck with me.
I had never played ANY Halo games before. My first experience with the franchise was when MS gave it to us for Games with Gold.

Silent Hill 2's ending surprised me as a young dude playing it in 2001.

I felt bad for the main character the whole playthrough, but he turned out to be a selfish asshole pretty much.

I don't actually remember what happens, but I remember being totally shocked b the ending of the original Nier.

Also Assassins' Creed 2 when you realize Minerva is talking to Desmond, not Ezio.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
shadow of the collosus and little nightmare 2, RDR 1 and RDR2, thats what i can think of for now.

If we're doing "oldies" I could point out the end to Cosmic Fantasy 2.
Basically you spend the entire game trying to save your girlfriend from the big baddie. In order to kill him you end up killing your girlfriend

Oh and Dungeon Explorer on the Sega-CD. Be careful what you wish for.

Crisis Core has amazing ending. great cutscene, music and song. the protagonist fight to the end and lost but it set up the beginning for the main hero of the main game. didnt play the Reunion version yet.

Persona 3 has the best ending for me. the rooftop scene and how it make me feels empty afterward. didnt play the remake yet. bummer cant get the deluxe edition due to the Atlus Asia stupid mistake of releasing chinese version for south east asia lol.

To me it is only terrible if you pick anything other than the ending where you kill the reapers.

They all deserved to die, so I got the ending I wanted.
Eh the Deus ex machina endings were lazy, poorly written and a cop out. It basically marred an almost perfect series. Lots of people hated that ending (myself included) and even with a patched extended ending it juist fell flat.

TLOU1, because you just KNEW social pressure would not let Joel as the MC get away with what he did(protect his kidnapped and soon to be murdered adopted child from an evil murderous paramilitary outfit in a time with no laws).

They felt the need to correct this ending at the very VERY beginning of TLOU2, as soon as they possibly could, so you just know there were some that wanted to change TLOU1 ending but weren't allowed to do so.

I like to pretend that TLOU2 isn't canon and never happened. It really shouldn't have, because it changed one of the bravest and most thought provoking stories in gaming into an also ran about the evils of not sacrificing everything to society and how getting revenge when someone kills your father is somehow bad and instead you should forgive the motherfucker.

The Last of Us. Bit it was also perfect (and the sequel should never have happened).

Silent Hill 2. This was the next level in storytelling in a game for me.

I gotta chime in on Spec Ops the Line. I played it recently and it was a great ending that really took you by surprise. It was dark and depressing and fit the characters journey he made throughout the game. It was one of those endings where you just sat with you mouth open completely flabbergasted. What a game.
