What Was It Like The First Time You Upgraded To A Better Console?

Went from Gameboy advanced to ps4. Did have a laptop in between where I occasionally(more like rarely, max of a game or two a year amounting to a playtime of 20-30 hrs in a year) played games at a blistering 1~15 fps on integrated graphics.

Megadrive to Nintendo 64 (Zelda Ocarina of time) was a religious experience.

But then, I became a Rogue Squadron 64 fan...turning on the Game Cube for the first time with Rogue Squadron 2 was like having an orgasm from the eyes.

Never happened to me, it happened from NDS to 3DS and then to Switch but there were big gaps between upgrade that I didn't have previous consoles with me anymore.

Other than that, upgrading my PC in the past few years have always felt amazing when it came to CPU or GPU, even the RAM the times I could only play with my Ryzen APU (life savers, definitely!)... That's probably why I don't care about transformative graphic improvements, I don't even see PS5/Xbox Series being basically high res last gen machines in terms of games, I really like it is like that.

I was on the hunt for a 4k TV many years ago as an upgrade for my 1080p tv. Scored a free Xbox One X with a LG TV and it blew my mind how good everything looked.

I don't remember. Atari to nes so I was in 1st grade. It was my neighbor who gave it to me which I'll never forget. Such a nice guy

Upgrading from PS4 to PS5 felt like a great leap. SSD with short loading times and snappy UI, dual sense with unbelievable haptics and triggers, 60fps in almost every game etc. It all just felt like something I had waited for a long time.

Edit: ah, the first time... oh well, that was the most significant for me anyways.

My first huge leap was when I transitioned from a Sega Mega Drive to a PlayStation. My parents had to physically pull me away from it lol.

Going from the Atari 2600 to NES was incredible. From the blocky Seaquest to the cutscenes from Ninja Gaiden was mind blowing.
Another one was from SNES to PSX. SF2 to Tekken was incredible. Finally arcade visuals at home!
Seeing Soul Calibur on the DC was unbelievable good, but then the MGS2 trailer came...

Going from a Game Gear to a Mega Drive was the stuff of dreams.
And the jump from the Mega Drive to the PS1 was also awesome.

I owned an Intellevision and Atari when I was real young, I did not even really care for them, my Dad just bought them because he was a tech head. Missile Command and Tron were like ok fun, but really only something I would play for like 10 minutes at a time and then turn off.

The first time I saw an NES being played at a Kids&Company (kind of a big evening daycare parents would drop their kids at while they went out on a date) I was blown away. I believe Castlevania and Super Mario Bros were the first two games I saw. The game worlds had character and amazing color and the music was so much better. I did not get my own for another year or so.

NES to Genesis was a big deal. Got it just as they bundled it with Sonic, and the graphics were so much better then NES. I remember saying to myself "I'll never get sick of playing this!" but I was pretty much done with Sonic after a week lol.

The actual biggest jump personally tho was PS1/N64 to Dreamcast. Maybe because I had never seen it before I owned it on 9/9/99 (whereas I had been exposed to the NES and Genesis before I owned them), but Soul Calibur looked so much better and the motion was so much smoother then anything I had ever seen before, even in Arcades! It was Insane!

Just seeing 1 image of a SNES-ified Super Mario for the first time in a news article was mind-blowing and got me super excited.

I miss generational leaps. This generation just feels like an extension of the last one.

Mega Drive/SNES to the Saturn/PS1/N64 was huge for me but then moving up the Dreamcast was magic. Literally an arcade machine in your house.

Commodore 64 to sega master system 2 plus wasn't that big of a jump but going from there to snes was insane.

Also ps1 to ps2, even a shit ass game like x-squad looked infinitely better than anything on ps1 by a landslide, mgs2 made me come multiple times i n a row.
