Wifi quality in Playstation products

My Sony TV isn't too bad, though it seems to take a moment to turn on so you can't use smartTV features the second you turn the tele on.

Even 100 mpbs can be low, and cause problems with peak throughput in busy scenes in high-quality rips. 1000 mbps is advisable IMO, especially since 100 mbps isn't REALLY 100 mbps, more like 70-90 mbps, depending on your router.

But you're right thateven in a perfect wrold, with the PS3's 802.11g WiFi chip working at theoretical peak performance at all times, it would still be too slow for HD over DLNA.

The PS4's chip should theoretically be capable of it, but it really depends on where you live, and on the quality of your router. A CAT5/6 cable is still superior, though a 100 mbps CAT4 cable might not be anymore.

personally ive wired everything with 1Gbit. So I never checked it myself.
Im just saying what the author of ps3 media Server sais in the readme. Or did once. When I read the info years ago.

I ran with 100 mbps cables for a while, and had trouble with some files, especially when encoders switched to 10bit. Eveything in my home which needs to do streaming is connected via Cat6a 10gbps cables now though, so I don't have to rip them out when 4k comes around. I just need to replace a few gigabit switches, and I'm golden.

Here's a tip for those that don't mind spending extra money. You can buy a wireless N/AC bridge. My PS3 connection wasn't good enough for streaming so I purchased a wireless N bridge that can connect to 5ghz band. Much better now. I can connect up to 4 devices to it so I did the same with PS4.

I'm certainly having problems with my PS4's wifi.

There's a wall and 6 feet of empty space between my PS4 and the router in my house and the connection fluctuates a lot.

Agreed, the wifi on my PS3 is complete garbage. The wifi on my Vita is shit as well, the range is horrible! I actually create a hotspot on my phone so I can connect my Vita to my Phone to use wifi.

PS3 range is terrible, doesn't reach from where I have it so I need a wired connection. Vita doesn't reach from the same spot with Wifi power save on, but reaches and works pretty well with Wifi power save off. Neither drop connections when within range though.

For those of you who are having Vita range troubles try turning Wifi power save off. Despite it sounding like something that disables Wifi while in sleep mode, it actually increases the strength of the signal. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/psvita/settings/wifi_savemode.html

Has anybody else noticed that Sony have a rather disconcerting habit of putting absolutely shithouse internal wifi hardware into their systems? PS3, PS4, Vita....The wifi in all of them fucking sucks.

I have been suffering consistent random dropouts on PS4 recently during gameplay (specifically Battlefield). The system was fine on the same router for the first two months and then suddenly boom, issues. MY powerline adapter has been getting a pretty decent run for its value in both the PS3 and 4 over the past couple of years. I don't know if the recent firmware update has done this, but giving it a quick google, it doesn't appear that I am in a minority here. Anyone else on GAF suffering this?

Haven't had a single problem with PS4 and PSVita. The only problem I had was with the PS3 in which I was getting slow download speeds on updates - even then I think it was just the shitty update servers.

Invest in some networking tools and a box of however many 100s of feet of Ethernet cable you need, and run the drops through your household (or apartment). It's worth it. Wi-Fi is simply unreliable even in the best of scenarios.

Never had a problem with the WIFI on my PS3. Certainly not on the PS4 (I haven't bothered with the chord since taking it out of the box). Vita is so-so.

Vita's Wi-Fi is the absolute worst I've ever experienced, complete nightmare most of the time. It often loses the signal unless I'm literally standing right in front of the router. Meanwhile the 3DS has no issues anywhere in the apartment.

At least the vita can actually connect to wifi with complex login systems (like the ones where you have to click accept in a browser to log in)

I haven't experienced any wifi drops on the vita and I play killzone mercenaries multiplayer all the time

The wi-fi reception I get/got on the PS4 was bad, worse than any other device in the same space.

I ended up buying a powerline adapter and simply using that.

From personal experience:
  • PS3 wifi pretty much useless - unless the router is like three meters from it.
  • PSP wifi was dishearteningly slow to set up, but once it was done, it worked just fine.
  • PS Vita wifi is very good.
  • Have not messed around with wifi on my PS4 yet. Wired connection FTW.
  • BONUS ENTRY - Sony Tablet S (the first one, PlayStation Mobile Certified) had abysmally poor wifi. Signal fell to one bar at approximately three feet from router antenna.

My fat PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita have all worked flawlessly with wireless networks. Never had any of the issues you're talking about, OP.

I'm not knowledgeable enough about how it all works to say why, but I can say with certainty that my Ps3 downloads were really slow, but my PS4 downloads match my Steam download speed, which is the fastest I have had. For whatever reason, PS3 speed is less than half of what my line can do.

Huge disappointment for me that my ps4 doesn't support 5ghz band. My retina pro, iPad, iPhone all get 60mbps down, while my ps4 can only pull down 8mbps tops from my bedroom. I usually plug it into my airport express when I want to download something, because it's just too slow over wifi...

PS4 wireless has horrible range. I was getting less than 1MB download speeds from just one room over from my router. The 360 that was right next to it had a much better connection. It wasn't until I bought a wireless extender and set it up behind my tv for the PS4 (and other consoles) to connect to that I was seeing 10+MB download speeds again.

You need a better router. I'm using a shitty free BT home Hub 4, and my Ps4 has a perfect signal a floor up and two rooms away.

Really the only problem I've ever had with Sony products and wifi have been speed related... I only get 300-500kb on my PS3, I have 60mbps internet and no other devices (yes, even other G devices) get that low of speed. Absolutely crazy.

(Edit) When I had a Vita I got terrible speeds too... but I don't recall them off hand. Just know games took hours to download which baffled me.

Never had a problem with Sony WiFi. None.

Even on my PSP-1000, I was able to play SOCOM on it without disconnecting, with the wireless router being in the basement.

Seems more likely that Battlefield is having issues, since it's known for having quite a few of them. Are you experiencing drops in other games on your PS4?

It was terrible with my PS3. Honestly, this is one of the reasons I got an XB1 instead of a PS4 right out of the gate. Good to hear that the PS4's wifi sounds better than the PS3 as I will eventually pick one up.

My Vita wi-fi is fantastic. I've never had any issues downloading anything from the store.

Now as for my PS3, I plug that ethernet. I don't accept anything less than wired for online play.

The vita has surprised me, much better than past PS products. My 40gb fat has terrible WiFi. I haven't tested the WiFi on the ps4 much because I wire my consoles.
