With Xbox consoles seemingly dead, should Sega re-enter the home-only console market?

Should Sega make a new console?

No

The only thing that would make some sense is for Valve to try Steam Box again. But I would have to think that wouldn't really be an AAA console, more like something to play their F2P games on.

Yes, its a bit of a harp on the fellow gaffer who made this thread

But regardless Sega has been waiting for the right moment to come back before someone else butts in the void like say Samsung. Your opinion would be much obliged in this nothing burger thread.

Sega literally just, just got back into a good enough place financially to where they could bring us these titles back:

And you want them to waste money making hardware at a loss for a small chance at competing with an industry that has changed drastically within the last quarter of a century. You're better off buying some custom android/windows handheld and slapping a Dreamcast logo on it.

Why enter a dying market? They would be much better off selling their games on any and every platform available to them and taking their 70%.

The gaming market isn't what it was in the 90s. A Sega-sized company could not afford to compete.

Just stop. Sega was all smoke and mirrors. The rose colored glasses are strong with this company. Their only success of the Genesis is debatable due to inventory and returned stock.

Poorly run company every generation they were in hardware. Dreamers with great games and outside or arcades, no financial smarts ever.

If not for a wiping of their debt and donations from a dying man, the company would have died a death sooner.

Only smart business decision ever was to bail on the Dreamcast and get the hell out.

As much as I'd love to see it, No. Right now they're doing pretty great as a third party and just have started bringing their old franchises back like VF. Getting back into console making business would be suicide for them.

Still I'm hoping someone steps up to challenge Sony since Xbox is not up to the task and Nintendo is kinda in their own lane right now.

Now that I don’t believe in Sony or Xbox to deliver on the traditional type of games I’d welcome again a Sega launch with an arcade title with colourful textures and a blue sky.

I'm surprised the Dreamcast sold as well as it did despite only being in production for just over a year outside of Japan. Almost sold as well as the Saturn which was in production almost 3 times as long and coming off a reasonably successful Genesis.

But obviously no to them trying again. They don't have anywhere close to the resources now to play and didn't even have them back then either.

They could try, but I feel like in order to succeed they'd need to be doing something different and better than Sony/Nintendo. ie release a console designed around VR where the VR experience is actually pretty good for the average person.
It'd be a pretty huge gamble either way and I doubt they could pull it off.

They would need to build up all the necessary infrastructure (people, tools, R&D, design, technical development and engineering departments, customer support, dev support, QA, etc.). I am not even sure if they have the money that would be required for this.

They would need to team up with an IT hardware company for that. I'm very skeptical that they could develop and distribute a competitive home console by themselves.

No, just let Valve, Apple, Samsung, Google try.
With MS out, there will be alot less bs and Sega is doing great.
With Sonic movies and there games becoming more popular. They are finally doing what the should have always done with games like Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Sonic Mania, Jet Set Radio (bunch of morons for taking so long)

Even Xbox with all the financial muscle of M$ and huge investments have had to bow down to PS, Sega doesn't have the money to get into manufacturing hardware, making games is going well for them.

While I like the idea of having more options than MS, PS and Ninty, the direction of console development suggests it would just be another pre-built PC with a branded chassis.

SEGA comes back to the console market with an announcement of a new console. With that being said, all future SEGA-made games will be exclusive. Like a Dragon, Persona, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shin Megami Tensei, Phantasy Star, Shenmue, Alex Kidd, ToeJam & Earl, Virtua Fighter, Super Monkey Ball, Crazy Taxi, and many more games enter production or return to production.

Hardware would be on par if not better than the likes of Nintendo (either more powerful but not portable, or just as powerful and portable like a switch) As that is their most likely closest competitor. Complete with their own game/ps plus style membership with all Sega titles available from retro to current.

Could SEGA stay afloat in the console market? Would the exclusives help a lot? What else would it need to bring to the table?

Cosoles demand tons of money, plus the online cost.

Sega does not has the money to relase a new console, and would be stupid yo do it now with Sony and Nintendo in so strong positions.

Appel, Google , Amazon and even Samsung have the money but think they know how risky would be to lauch a new console so they are out at this moment.

I think only Apple, Steam or Meta could make a 3rd console platform successfully.
They already have storefronts and services. Already have devices.
They just have to have the will to put up a lot of money to create the hardware and secure lots of exclusive games.

I don't think there is room honestly. Business outside of food and cars is mostly a binary world. Coke and Pepsi, Target and Walmart. If you want to be a 3rd brand, you have to be pretty unique or, just be the cheapo brand.

Xbox proved that there was really no point for them to exist. Xbox and PlayStation games are pretty much the same with just a different branding. Gaming doesn't really change if Xbox goes away. Sega doesn't have the money of Microsoft to make a high end machine and would effectively be competing with Nintendo rather than Sony. Could Sega make a Switch competitor and put Sega games on it exclusively? Yes. Would it work....

...wait a minute. Yes. I'd buy it. I'm all in now.

Realistically though, it would probably do a quarter of what the Switch 2 would do and that's probably not enough to keep them in business or make it worth it.

Nah.

I hope Valve/Apple get in and put Sony in place. We need more competition. As much as people on here don't like to hear it but Microsoft gaming isn't going anywhere.

Apple seems unlikely. They are too focused on selling iPhones and services but would love to see them enter the market beyond app store games. They have improved their gaming on Mac recently but eh.

Valve is most likely. Steam Deck is awesome. Nothing stopping them putting out a second model and a traditional console. They're working on their own OS which is already on Steam Deck. It would help their push to move PC gaming away from Windows. The only thing holding them back is lack of exclusive games. You could argue PC has plenty of exclusives but they aren't Valve's. I don't see them releasing games all the time going forward or buying up studios.

A gaming market with only Sony sucks. Nintendo do their own thing. Something needs to change.

Nah, the Dreamcast was too good for cuck gamers. 😎

They get what they deserve... under powered Nintendo hardwares feat useless gimmicks and $1000 PS5 pro to play PS4 remasters 👍🏽
You don't deserve, Sega 😘

It’s always funny watching sega fans keep the delusion going. It’s one thing wishing for a new sega console but I doubt all the hardcore sega fans would buy it.

Should be grateful they didn’t totally fold and they keep going as a 3rd party.

No one will enter. Apple doesn't look like it's interested and with their pricing you'd be better off building your own gaming PC. The Chinese are buying companies making games and targetting the retro console market where brands like Anbernic are very successful.

Yes. We need something else to console war over. And besides, it would be fun to watch them enter and then exit the console war a second time.
