This roller coaster accident in Japan always freaked me out:

Stand-up coaster breaks an axle, causing it to derail, a woman died because when the coaster derailed her head fucking smashed into a guard rail next to the track. Imagine if you were strapped in to your seats, unable to move as your face flies right at a big steel rail... then imagine if you were the person strapped in next to the lady that got her face smashed in.

Some industry officials pointed to the possibility of faulty maintenance.

Expoland said it disassembled the coasters on the ride in annual detailed inspections normally held in February. But this year, it did not disassemble them — and the axle went unchecked — because it could not find sufficient work space, the operator said.

Ugh. That's a terrible story.

I really feel for the family of this woman, but I'm not going to stop riding rollercoasters because of the incident.

I was riding one of those virtual roller coasters that actually move (Not just vibrate) and my seatbelt came undone when it went upside down. Banged myself a ton in there before my partner managed to hit the emergency stop button, haven't been on a real or fake coaster since.

they're pretty safe, i dont think the park has had an accident yet. Although i had a bit of a scare since my restraint did not initially lock down, [my fault, i was sitting too high in the chair] Had three employees jump right over to help instantly though. I still white knuckled the entire ride though lol.

I was just at Cedar Point with my gf a month ago and every ride we rode had a seat belt and a harness (either the shoulder one or one that clicks down to your waist/knees). I thought it was a bit much, I guess not.

I visited San Antonio with family earlier this year and we went to six flags. We waited in line for two hours for one rollercoaster and were turned down a mere 2 groups away because they had to perform maintenance due to a "technical problem".

My family and I were beyond pissed off, but now I'm so grateful that happened.

Every coaster built in the past decade or so does. It's generally wooden coasters from the late 80s that have the lap restraints.

If that comes undone you will fly out out of the coaster just like one with only a lap harness. I think the newer shoulder restraint systems have belts that buckle but some of the older ones just pull down.

From the sound of it, this is negligence at its worst, especially considering the potential (which became actual) repercussion.

I'm not a lawyer but I'm betting this gets passed off onto the company that made the harness(if it is not Six Flags). If the training ever said "one click is enough" then I don't know is she could be found negligible even if more clicks would have kept her in.
