Yakuza show IGN review: 4/10

Haven’t seen it yet, but I don’t understand why these video game adaptation movies typically deviate from the source material so much. You make a Yakuza movie based on a popular game with strong storytelling, plot, writing and memorable characters and they somehow screw it up?

Trailer looked like some loose Yakuza adaptation with none of the charm of the original. So not really surprising.
It has an 67 on Rotten Tomatoes so it's not universally hated but seems pretty mid at best.

ign gives low score
gaf: i knew it was bad
ign gives low score again
gaf: fuck ign!

stop fucking judging by IGN or anyone elses standards. Go play/watch the stuff yourselves, fucking brain rot.

I mean there is no logic with GAF and reviews if we are honest.

Reviewers give mid or low score to a game most of GAF is looking forward to:
"Pfff who cares about reviews, these sites don't know shit, I make my own decisions and places like Metacritic are irrelevant to me"

Reviewers give high score to game most of GAF wanted to see fail:
"see? this is why reviews are irrelevant, they probably just got paid to give out these scores and gave it extra points because it's woke"

Reviewers give high score to a game most of GAF is looking forward to:
Happy Jonah Hill GIF

"OMG I knew it, this is such good news, let me post screenshots of the metacritic score of this game all over the internet and forever reference it as undeniable proof of how good it is. Pffff that game you like only has a 80 metascore ? Lol look this one got a 90!!!!!!!!"

Watched the first two episodes and holy shit it is miscast and doesn't have the weight of the game

Also, loosely based on the first game. Has too much stuff that we kinda know but never was showed before, still weak thou

They turned Shibusawa, one of the best bosses ever, into a lazy fat prepotent guy for crying out loud

Yeah, it sucks

Damn shame. Do I even bother watching?
No

If you really feel like you really, really need to watch it. The answer won't change - No.
This series takes old familiar characters and the history of the franchise and tries to tell it from its own point of view, completely changing the tone of the story and characters. I don't understand who in their right mind came up with this idea.

I watched ep1 today. 4/10 is a generous score.

For any Yakuza/Like a Dragon fans that haven't seen this yet, don't bother. This is not the Yakuza/Like a Dragon that you know and love and they didn't even manage to get the action or music right. The fight scenes toward the end of the episode were supposed to be "oh shit, Kiryu is a badass" moments and they dropped the ball hard. The main actor also can't do Kiryu, even though it seems he tried really hard to do so. He just isn't that guy.

Just fyi they gave penguin a 5 , which is probably the best thing on TV right now and in my personal opinion one of the best shows in years.

I don't watch much TV but I'll check it out. A lot of the films I've enjoyed have had bad ratings. Probably best to take it as a series about Yakuza and not a show related to the games.

If you're looking for an Asian crime show to watch, I would recommend Bloodhounds on Netflix. It's 8 episodes and they're solid. Much better than this Yakuza show.

Don't watch past the first fight scene if you care about spoilers, but I think the action in Bloodhounds is much better than what they did in Yakuza based on ep1. The first fight scene is from ep1 of Bloodhounds.
