So all I see is people moaning about how baddly performing games are nowadays. I just want to remind people that it's always been like this.

Gears 1 on 360 and uncharted 1 on PS3 ran like shit and were janky af on release. The orange box, far cry 3, GTA 4 and 5. Halo 1 on og Xbox. Ocarina of time. Some of the greatest games of all time. And they all ran like shit 🤷‍♂️. But I still enjoyed them as did pretty much everyone!

Games are very complex things and there is no magic wand to make a game run perfect. Especially when a game is trying to push the boundaries of what can be done.

Literally every game I play nowadays looks amazing to me on PS5 and my modest PC 🤷‍♂️😊. Growing up on the Atari 2600 and ZX Spectrum I really can't believe how far we've come and I just wish people would enjoy what they have now and cut the devs some slack.

If you really think every game is shit you are probably burnt out and should find another hobby lol

Nah, it's worse now, I've never gone over 2 years without buying a new game before, there are too many of the bigger games releasing broken and unfinished today, it wasn't as bad as this in the past, 4 apologies for PC ports already this year and its only June 1st lol

I wholeheartedly agree with you, OP.
Shadow of the Colossus - a game that was #1 in my top 10 for years - ran at 20fps most of the time. And even though I'm sensitive to frame rate issues and stutters, I didn't care, because the game gave me something I haven't felt until then. It was just an awesome experience.
Would I have preferred if the game back then and modern games all ran at at least 60fps? Of course, would be nice if more devs would design their games around that target. But still, I don't care about technical shortcomings if the game underpinning all of it is fun, or innovative, or seems like it wouldn't be possible with the technical limitations at that time.
The problem nowadays is that a lot of games (more so in the AAA space) are just not good games. A lot of the time they lack vision and soul, are designed to make money, focus tested to death... just to chase down a trend. But that's society in general. Not a lot of people live from the inside out and are truthful to themselves.

It depends on what it feels like in the overall experience. Shadow of the Colossus had some awful framerate and jank which made it very hard to play in parts, but at its best it all seemed to work and come together. Half-Life 2 worked well on PC on release, except that there was a lot of stuttering just after loading areas. People complained like fuck about that, you can be sure.

Uh no? It worked fine even in split screen with barely any drops (from the standard 30 fps of that time obviously).

The OG Halo was also running pretty well except the last Warthog escape.

That's my point though. I didn't think those games were shit then I enjoyed them immensely. I think some people have lost track of the enjoyment a game can bring despite it's technical flaws. Just look TOTK. Games look better, play better and there is more choice and platforms than ever!

We are complaining that PC games have too much stutters recently. This is new. Console games past 3D era performing like crap is not new. Doesn't mean people should not complain.

Uh yes lol. Gears definitely dropped frames in most fights. And halo dropped to the mid 20s once you got in a vehicle firefight.

I think it’s fair to say that it was standard in the PS3/360 generation when the overwhelming majority of games were at that framerate.

Really minor drops mostly in cutscenes and that rain level.
Halo on the other hand is indeed a bit worse than I remember.

Is that an AI version of john 😂😂. Yeah I assume they patched it like most games but when I played it day one it definitely dropped frames a lot more.

Years ago some Windows games would hard lock BSOD my PC. Interesting that doesn’t happen often anymore.

The internet has amplified our negative comments. But alot of us can handle a game dropping a few frames, it's not the end of the world. Also hate this cancel culture towards devs too when they dont deserve it. They were forced to work extremely hard on games they didnt want to make, just like how we do stuff at our jobs that dont make sense but have to do it anyway.

Newsflash, every game on the N64 ran like dog shit. So did the PSOne when pushing 3D. It was the absolute first era of exploring 3D polygon generation and no one knew what they were doing. We ARE talking 1994-1996 levels of hardware.

What excuses do PS5, XSX, and PC developers have today, 28 years later, when not using ray tracing in their engines?

Gears and GTA4 came out about 17 years ago. OoT was 25 years ago. Our expectations have significantly changed since then due to several gameplay improvements, fine tuning, improvements visually and FPS performance. Maybe we are spoiled, but the standard has gotten much, much better.

We used to have a blast playing Goldeneye 20+ years ago on the N64 controller where you can't properly aim, where the FPS drops between 10-20, where all maps looked visually the same. There's so much more I can say about the game, but please play it today...it'll make you sick.

And do you not think gaming as a whole has got better? This is exactly what I'm saying! Games look and play great now. Better than ever in the history of gaming.

People dissing Spiderman 2, GOW Ragnorok, Halo Infinite, Hogwarts, Jedi Survivor, the list is endless. These games play and look great🤷‍♂️. It's just getting ridiculous and just smacks of entitlement.

Gears of war was a HUGE next gen game. Truly something we've never seen before. It ran poorly at times but generally close to 30. Lower input lag than most 30fps games nowadays. Shooting actually is enjoyable in it.
Now 30fps games run like dogshit because they focus so much on vsync and framepacing and all that nonsense that dmeons souls ps5 30fps mode god +75ms of input lag compared to bloodborne. This is real.

Performance on 360/ps3 didn't matter too much because graphics were amazing and what was happening on the screen was new.
Gta 4 same thing. I've got my 360 with gta4 on it's release and it's the most I've ever been wowed by a game. Never once did I though it runs bad.
Even EDF 2017... the worst performing game I've ever played... like 7fps in split screen... It was some of the most fun I've EVER HAD.
When You play a good game, that you are amazed by, all the petty complaints go away. That can be graphics or gameplay.

I remember amazing experiences and graphics from those games. not the poor performance. I do remember ugly graphics though... that's why I switched from 240hz 1080 tn to 4k monitor and later 4k oled tv. I am a visual guy maybe.
You would think Dark Souls was the worst game ever but never in my mind, do I remember fps drops in that game when I remember my first playthrough.

So I have nothing against 30fps... just dont make it dogshit high input lag like it is nowadays. And one more thing - good motion blur helps 30fps greatly. Especially on oled. Lost Planet and uc4 is example of good motion blur

Some say our expectations are higher. But i'd say it's more subtle. We have a hard time accepting that games that don't look particularly good as of today "run like shit".

Because most games OP mentioned were mind blowing when they came out. We don't get this sort of slap in the face anymore.

Like Uncharted 2 that was GotY in 2009 and it actually ran like crap omg. When i played the remaster in 60 fps i thought "right, this is how it was supposed to play all along". But we are console players, so if it's impressive it's alright, we know we can't have everything.
