Just blew my mind. The second part, when the synth starts, still sends shivers down my spine since 1995. As much as I love Miyazaki's corpus and many other anime series and movies, there's still two perfect works of art and awesomeness that still reign supreme above them all: Akira, and Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell goes firsts because the beauty of all of it it's just too much

You probably already know this, but for anyone who doesn't, the band who performed that theme song is They Might Be Giants. They've been around since the early to mid 80s, and they have around 20 albums at this point.
And here's another fun bit of TV theme trivia: The opening theme for Pee-Wee's Playhouse was performed by Cyndi Lauper.
