Zuck: Meta will follow X’s lead, add community notes, simplify policies, prioritize free expression over censorship

I wonder how much of that is genuine and how much is him panicking because Facebook is (seemingly) becoming less relevant.
He is a businessman, it's nothing personal, it's just about money. In a few years when the wind will blow the other way he will do a 180, he has a fiduciary duty doing what is in the best interest of his shareholders.

I also noticed this bit:
Meta says it’s also scrapping a number of current restrictions around topics like immigration and gender identity
I'm not a fan of gender identity discussion (maybe I'm just too old, but the concept is a bit sci-fi to me), but that is an incredibly cowardly move.

So what’s up with Zuck and gang doing a 180?

Is he losing users and needs to open it up?

Or Trump won and no need to be biased until election time in 4 years?

Facebook's evolution has been crazy. I got my account in fall 2005 back when you needed a .edu email address. It was still incredibly cool back then, but it immediately lost its original appeal once they opened the floodgates to the masses. Nothing will ever replicate the brief time when it was exclusively for college students.

Probably one of those moments of "rules for you but not to me". Willing to guess it will do nothing against the AI profiles messages.

Part midlife crisis, part Elon bought Twitter and changed the game.

4 years ago Zuck followed what every social media platform was doing. Anyone the didn’t fall in line with approved language and opinions were silenced or banned. Now he’s distancing himself from that while rebuilding his image.

That you can reverse something you (and many others) considered to be part of human rights because the wind is blowing the other way. He could have worded it differently or just ignored mentioning it altogether.
Just goes to show how phony the motives behind it were. Too many people lack conviction and change their opinions based on what’s popular. I can’t stand it.

The real tell will be if BlackRock starts to walk back its ESG stuff. It was always about the money. They're all realizing woke isn't profitable, or at the very least, is simply so costly that they can't continue pushing it despite how much they (or Larry Fink and his peers) personally like it.

Well - yes. Which is exactly what Zuck is doing here. I wonder how he will spin it around in a few years.

Still not going back to using Facebook to any real degree.
I still use it for fam and friends stuff. Good thing is there was a spat between FB and Canada news so the main news feed is totally different than it used to be. Instead of junky articles it’s now just fact and reference kinds of posts like baseball stats or a website showing pics of what the city looked like 50 years ago and stuff like that. No politics or traditional baity news articles.

And since the feed will tailored to what you look at, a lot of my news feed filler is sports related which is cool.

Great news. Curiosity in our youth should be actively encouraged not repressed and stamped out

Slightly off topic but I have been reflecting back over my own younger life recently. My first experiences of the Internet was spending Friday nights researching controversial topics such as 9/11, UFOs and Astral Projection. Some of the first non-fiction books I actively sought out to read was David Icke. Was the majority of it bullshit? Yes. But it also helped me to develop critical life skills in thinking outside the box, creativity, problem solving and most importantly not listening blindly to whatever people tell me. I've been able to outthink social workers and work managers that have had their own alterior selfish motives. Every single person has their own biases. Those in leadership should not be allowed to dictate your thoughts.

The "fact checking" model is based on the idea that some group of bureaucrats can declare themselves to be the arbiters of objective reality. Whether it is Snopes, Washington Post, New York Times, etc. It's a totally ridiculous idea. And they used this idea to come up with this totally fake label of "misinformation expert" claiming taht they and they alone could not only determine reality but judge others on how they strayed from reality. What a stupid time.

I think meta is doing better than ever?
Anyway, I doubt any of these platforms want to be messing about with policing their content and would rather not if they can get away with it. And now that Trump has his own social media platform, they probably don't have to worry about him trying to repeal 230 any time soon.

This is a good thing. Even if the motivation is just money and user retention. It means that the tides are changing for the best and common sense is winning.

Have they unbanned accounts? No, then whatever.

I think FB to modern social media (Twitter, TikTok) is akin Youtube to traditional TV.
