Wifi quality in Playstation products

Has anybody else noticed that Sony have a rather disconcerting habit of putting absolutely shithouse internal wifi hardware into their systems? PS3, PS4, Vita....The wifi in all of them fucking sucks.

I have been suffering consistent random dropouts on PS4 recently during gameplay (specifically Battlefield). The system was fine on the same router for the first two months and then suddenly boom, issues. MY powerline adapter has been getting a pretty decent run for its value in both the PS3 and 4 over the past couple of years. I don't know if the recent firmware update has done this, but giving it a quick google, it doesn't appear that I am in a minority here. Anyone else on GAF suffering this?

It's probably their TCP software implementation rather than hardware? I'd be surprised if they used something other than a stock wifi chip.

Never had a problem with Wifi on my systems - PS3, PSP and PSV worked all fine. WiiU is the first system which is giving me a moyor issue with the distance - from what i`ve read some PS4 consoles also have a subparsignal reception.

True, they really suck in this area:

- Vita does not support 5 Ghz. (Does PS4?)
- PS3 STILL on Wifi g
- PS4 having a crappy range

My wireless at home is pretty good though, so I don't have actual issues, except for having to keep my Wifi router still in legacy b/g mode, instead of n only, which would improve speed (and range) a bit.

300 post plus thread on PS4 wifi issues.

I was experiencing a weird bug, if I left the console idle it would just disconnect from Wifi without any sort of error message saying it had done just that. It would appear to stay connected to the router, but not be able to get a internet connection.

After the latest firmware, all appears to be good.

Never really had an issue.

Though I was trying to connect my PSP to wifi recently and they don't support modern security methods at all... I had to get into the control panel of my router to get it to work. 9 year old console though....

Don't remind me. I couldn't get a decent signal 1 floor above my router.

My 3000 could only connect to my WPA connection once every fifty or so attempts - it was disgusting. The only game that seemed to connect every single time was Resistance.

Never had an issue with the PS3/PS4

But I agree the PS Vita WiFi is absolute garbage. It's so strange because the rest of the console is such high quality

The PSP's was complete garbage. By the time you could get PSN on the thing I could never consistently connect it to my router at all.

The Vita's isn't very good in my experience either. Lots of drops. I can still get on to download what I need to download and update what I need to update though. I don't plan on playing online with the thing much.

The PS3 and PS4's are both fine though. I've had a few wonky experiences with PSN on the PS4 but I don't think that's the Wi-Fi.

No drop connections here but it seems my PS4 is not getting the full wireless N standard speed while all my computers connect at a 200-300mbit range.

Vita Wi-Fi works perfectly for me. Only thing about it is the range sucks. PS4 wi-fi gave me some troubles, but I port forwarding fixed it. I get better speeds on PS4 compared to my PS3.

I've always found it weird that this is such a split issue though. I've read a lot of complaints about Wi-Fi being shit on PlayStation products and just as many saying it works fine. I don't know much about tech so I'm actually curious why it would produce different results for so many people.

I only have lag in BF4.

Can play Fifa 14, NBA 2k14, Resogun, and DC Universe online without any problems.

Vita's Wi-Fi is the absolute worst I've ever experienced, complete nightmare most of the time. It often loses the signal unless I'm literally standing right in front of the router. Meanwhile the 3DS has no issues anywhere in the apartment.

"In face of the PS4’s other performance-focused features, it’s unusual that Sony has outfitted the PS4 with a 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi chip instead of the latest standard, 802.11ac, which offers significant gains in range and signal strength. It would have added to the cost of the system and market penetration for 802.11ac products is still burgeoning, but Sony’s aspirations for Gaikai cloud streaming and remote play would have reaped the benefits in the long-term."

is this why?

PS3 wifi is absolutely horrendous. I feel sorry for anybody that liked online gaming and couldn't play with a wired connection.

The only console I've ever had wifi issues with is a PSP. It was constantly dropping a connection, even right next to the router.

My Vita is fantastic, silky smooth all the time. The 3DS seems to have a slightly shorter range by a couple of metres, but still maintains a consistent connection, that's the most important thing.

As for home consoles, I had my Wii and PS3 both connected by wifi and had very few problems with them over the four years they were set up for.

Such a range of results in this thread, interesting stuff.

Yes, the PS3's Wifi is absolutely atrocious. It's always been bad, I used to have it sat literally 30 cm from my 360 yet the signal was significantly worse.

About a month or two ago the PS3's wifi has totally crapped out (after many many years). I keep getting a DNS error and booted from PSN after minutes. Doesn't happen on wired. Happens with multiple routers, IP in the DMZ, using Google DNS and normal settings. I've literally spent hours trying to fix it, only to come to the conclusion it's just broke.

I've yet to have any issues with my PS4's Wifi, but it is only 2.4ghz which for a next-gen console seems like a joke, so I'm going to assume they skimped out on the wifi again.

It stills boggles my mind ps4 doesn't support 5ghz wifi band. In my house there are 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 3 TVs, and a Xbox one all connected to my wifi and the ps4 is the only one that doesn't support 5gz and gets half speed of everything else.

Well PS3 atleast had both internal wifi adapter and ethernet adapter whereas my 360 required me to buy an expensive external adapter so I cant really complain about that. But the wifi on PS4 is good. Haven't lost connection in any game.

im only using wifi with the vita and have no issues with it.
PS3 and 4 are wired, never used wifi with them.
I also have an Xperia Phone and wifi is also good.

From my personal experience it's

PS4>>VITA>>>>>>>>PS3

I'm getting really good download speeds on my PS4 and Vita, but downloads on the PS3 are mostly really bad compared to the newer systems.

I run Plex through the PS3 wifi with very few issues (most of which I attribute to my shitty cheap Netgear router).

Vita has been flawless so far. No issue with wifi connection and downloads are surprisingly fast.

Wi-Fi was always great with PS3, PSP, Vita and PS4. Never had any problems. I love how great remote play works in my home. I ditched the 360 because my original one has only LAN and no Wi-Fi and I couldnt get a 20 m cable trough the house.

I don't know if it's just my PS3, but downloads are awfully slow. When it comes to updates I'd rather manually download the update through my USB.

Never had this issue on my Vita.

Never really went online with my PSP so can't really comment on that. Did all my downloading using media go on my PC.

PS3 use to consistently have connection issues and slow speeds, despite the fact that my Wii sitting directly adjacent to it almost never had any issues (not to mention every single other wifi device used in that room). Admittedly though things have improved a fair bit in the past couple of years; which if seems to correlate with us switching to a different brand of router; but even so, it's still not on par with other devices in the room.

PSV seems to work fine, can't really complain.

Don't own a PS4.

I found my OG model PS3's wireless was pretty much trash. Streaming video from a media server was pretty much impossible.

I now stream stuff using another device, but I've not had any wifi issues with my Slim PS3.

PS3 wireless was bad for dnla high bit rate streaming. Would stutter because it couldn't handle it. But otherwise it was fine for gaming.

Vita wifi is pretty bad, and that is quite baffling.

It's my only device that struggles in some rooms in my appartment. My iphone/ipad/3ds and everything else have full signal everywhere on the contrary.

I'm not saying they shouldn't improve the WiFi situation, but consoles really should be connected by high-quality cable, especially if you plan to use them for Netflix and DLNA-streaming.

WiFi on my Vita is great though, better than my smartphone.

My PS3 wifi is awful.

Could never get it working with PS Media Server and my MacBook.

Now the wifi on my PS3 doesn't work AT ALL. So I have to use an Ethernet cable now.

I use TP500mb powerline adaptors with my PS4 & never had any issues at all.

My router runs WPA2, and the PSP doesn't work with that, so its never been online. But based on what everyone else is saying it basically wouldn't have worked anyway, so that's alright.

because PS3 has only 54MBit Wifi.
For DLNA things 100Mbit is recommended if you watch HD stuff.

Even 100 mpbs can be low, and cause problems with peak throughput in busy scenes in high-quality rips. 1000 mbps is advisable IMO, especially since 100 mbps isn't REALLY 100 mbps, more like 70-90 mbps, depending on your router.

But you're right that even in a perfect world, with the PS3's 802.11g WiFi chip working at theoretical peak performance at all times, it would still be too slow for HD over DLNA.

The PS4's chip should theoretically be capable of it, but it really depends on where you live, and on the quality of your router. A CAT5/6 cable is still superior, though a 100 mbps CAT4 cable might not be anymore, depending on your setup.
