Obligatory

These are the only games in Japanese history that have sold over 1milllion first week that aren't Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, or Monster Hunter (no first week data available for Famicom or Super Famicom):

[GB] Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters 4 - 1,228,599 / 2,210,162 (Dec 7, 2000)
[PS1] Biohazard 3 Last Escape - 1,005,020 / 1,383,282 (Sept 22, 1999)
[PS1] Biohazard 2 - 1,389,733 / 2,154,975 (Jan 29, 1998)

The release for the second game was on a completely different scale. Higher production, more money on advertising, the incredibly high popularity of the TV anime (the anime was not airing when the first game was released)
I would assume that they have some sort of a gaming preview block after each airing of the anime similar to the block that Pokemon gets to promote its upcoming products.

All of this plus the game likely having a much higher budget does not make me surprised

Wactheimo: How can my Yokai be this cute?

OH GOD
I wasn't expecting numbers SO high...
I think this is somehow an historycal event for Japanese sales age.

Expand to what?

The have a show, a movie, games, Wonder Flick integration, merchandise out the wazoo.

What else is there?

Western localization!

Imagine if Nintendo made Amiibo's for this franchise.

This would be interesting. I think that going for the "interactive toys" category they could try to not overlap the Bandai agreement with L5.

Oh yeah, that.

They'd be stupid not to at least try.

Yea. And the anime rights are already sold for western hiring, so maybe they'll do it for real.
and hopefully quicjer than Little Battlers.

Who the hell could have known that Level-5 might create such a mega franchise in such short period of time? Wow.

I mean, the games are super Japanese, but it could definitely work in the West. With these sales, it'd be silly not to. Especially with the localization of the cartoon.

great great sales, are there monsters involved in this game? cause that could explain it :P

Yeah, there are a couple.

so much for mobile killing Japan

now we need to find a way to keep Level 5 from shooting itself in the foot as they tend to do with IPs

Not trying to defend them but L5 killing franchise eventually is somewhat intentional IMO.
The reason I'm guessing so is the franchise is tied to other entertainment industries too tightly (tv stations, toy makers like Bamco, Shogakukan publishing, etc.) In every 3-4 years they want something new, and franchise will be "refreshed" for that purpose.
